Why this must be read: An angry, lonely, bitter man, Jim spends Christmas alone at his father’s cabin, just as he has every Christmas since Blair turned down the offer of a detectives badge and left the country with another man. Then, five years after he walked out of Jim’s life, Blair returns, wanting to explain, but will Jim give him the chance, when he hates Blair so much?
“The Blair I loved is gone. The man on the other side of the door is a stranger. We're stranded in this small cabin until the blizzard breaks and there's no reason to be angry or impolite with my unexpected guest. I'll treat him like I would any other stranger, with impersonal courtesy.
With my course of action laid out, I take a deep breath and manage to climb to my feet. After stripping down to my long underwear, I add another blanket to my bed. With the door closed, I won't get much heat from the fireplace so I'll need the extra layer.
Sliding between the sheets, I lie on my back and rest my throbbing hand on my chest. The weight of the blankets is comforting. The weight of Blair would be more comforting. I grit my teeth and shove that thought aside. Closing my eyes, my ears tune into my uninvited cabin mate. He's washing the dishes and cleaning the kitchen. My hearing stretches without my consent and his heartbeat invades every part of me. I begin to count the beats.
I fall asleep before I hit thirty. “
Beautifully angsty, beautifully written and with a believably happy ending to boot.
