02:53 am Postcards from the Edge by Macha (NC-17)
Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] poisonapple73 and I'll be reccing for Gilmore Girls this month.

Fandom: GILMORE GIRLS
Pairing: Lorelai/Luke
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thestickywicket
Author Website: http://macha.healthyinterest.net/
Why this must be read:

Set the summer after Season 3, the sense of anticipation in this story is terrific. Lorelai and Luke, are, at their best, a fantastic example of a drawn out coupling that teases and satisfies simultaneously. The ending feels all the better for the wait you endure. Postcards from the Edge captures that sensation perfectly and uses the nature of their relationship to develop both Lorelai and Luke.

Why this must be read:
(from [profile] bkm5191)

Well I'm a sucker for a great opening, for tough guys who have the emotional maturity of housepets who stumble through important things with as much as grace as an ox wearing a blindfold and for fantastic titles.

In some ways this is a "we aren't gay, we're just men having sex with another man" fic, but to me it is about growing up, screwing up, and realising that even though you may not get a second chance with the person in your bed there is always the chance for a second chance over all.

Also some lines are extremely funny. You'll feel a little bit guilty for laughing.

Supernova: A rare celestial phenomenon involving the explosion of most of the material in a star, resulting in an extremely bright, short-lived object that emits vast amounts of energy.

08:16 am Five Times Jerry Falwell Did Not Approve by DoctorV (NC-17)
Fandom: DC COMICS
Characters/Pairing[s]: Booster/Beetle, Sue/Ralph. Guy, Bea/Mary, Ice, Rocket Red, General Glory
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] doctorv
Author Website: Well, a list of fanfic, anyway.
Why this must be read:

Because it's like having the JLI back, because each ficlet is wonderful and together they are synergistic. And because they affirm the diversity of life, in the face of those who would force 'one true way' on everyone. Which is far too sociopolitical of a statement to convey the sweetness, fun, and heart of this story.

09:28 am ‘Farther to Fall’ and ‘Disposal’ by Dreamlandburns (R)
Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
Pairing: James Norrington/Anamaria (sort of—if you squint and turn your head sideways)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dreamlandburns
Author Website: Livejournal memories
Why this must be read: The universe rather hates James Norrington. The harder he tries to be a good man, the more damage he manages to do. In his attempt to regain his honor at the end of Dead Man’s Chest, he actually discovers he has none. It’s James’s realization of just how far he’s fallen and his self-aware acceptance of this disgrace that makes this “Farther to Fall” stand out from the typical “evil Norrington” fics.

Farther to Fall

Also read [livejournal.com profile] dreamlandburns’s remix (is it possible to remix your own fic?) Disposal, in which she responds to a comment, “Can you make him sink any lower?" Oh yes, she can.

11:55 am Blooded by malnpudl (PG)
Hola! Welcome to the NCIS [livejournal.com profile] crack_van for June 2007! M&K will be your (somewhat) friendly drivers. Our tastes tend toward the Gibbs/DiNozzo realm, but we're going to make an effort to broaden our horizons for your crack-ish pleasure. NCIS has been on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van for just over a year and this will be the 101st recommendation. Very cool. Now, are you sitting comfortably? Are your seat belts fastened? Excellent! Here we go...

Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: McGee/Sciuto; Gibbs/DiNozzo
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] malnpudl
Author Website: n/a

Why this must be read: NCIS is a show that doesn't pull punches when it comes to showing you the figurative and literal guts of crime investigation. However, in my experience of NCIS fanfic, there isn't a lot of emphasis on the mechanics of crime scene and police procedure. Blooded is an outstanding exception. The story focuses on Tim McGee at one of his first really bad crime scenes and it isn't for the squeamish. [livejournal.com profile] malnpudl does a brilliant job of capturing the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes from McGee's perspective as an inexperienced investigator -- the perspective that most of us would have if we had to go to work at a brutal murder scene. But she doesn't allow the gore to overshadow the undercurrents of the characters' responses to the situation. McGee is determined to succeed and mirrors the pain the whole team has experienced -- we see Kate toughing it out, Gibbs's simmering anger over the crime, and the bravado Tony uses to cover his own vulnerabilities.

This piece is emotionally charged, but extremely subtle -- as are the references to the McGee/Sciuto and Gibbs/DiNozzo relationships. Near the end, there's a beautifully piercing moment between Gibbs and DiNozzo as seen from McGee's perspective -- it still makes me cry.

Eyes open or closed, it didn't matter; he could still see the bodies, two of them. No, two people. They were dead, but they were still people.

05:02 pm Sleepover by china_shop (NC-17)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Ray Vecchio/Ray Kowalski
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] china_shop
Author Website: china_shop's fanfic/slash index

Why this must be read:
As you'll know from my past recs here, I am a Ray/Ray fan despite its non-support in canon. I'll vary the pairings this time around, but I wanted to post this one while it was fresh.

Read this story if you like established relationship stories with hot lovin' and subtle characterization. Reading between the lines, the reader comes to realize how well-matched this pair is. Plus, while the basic tendency to snark between these two men is acknowleged, there's a sweetness to this interlude that please me greatly.

Fandom: Smallville
Pairing: Gen
Author's LJ: [livejournal.com profile] zeplum
Author's website: La Di Freaking Da / more recent fic excursions at [livejournal.com profile] saintstreet

Why this must be read:

I love Chloe out in the world, jaded and weary and able to fight but not sure that she wants to. She knew Clark, knew Lex, knew their lies and their truths and is stuck with that knowledge, that history, for better or for worse.

I love the way Kathe writes Chloe. I love Chloe's glittering, hard edges and the sparkle in her eyes (Chloe's, not Kathe's) when she knows something, when she finds some information and it's all hers.

I feel that this Chloe is a natural progression of Chloe - or was, three seasons ago, when it was written. That it clearly diverges from what we know now should not hold you back, however, because this Chloe is still a delight.
