Why this story must be read:
I’m a huge Kerouac fan and just loved this from the first time I read it. I love the way the quotes she selects are so right. To me, Jim’s a deep, dark character; on first impression, you’d never twig him for a Kerouac fan, and yet, Jack shared many of Jim’s characteristics.

I loved the passages Martha chose to reflect Jim’s character; Blair musing on what they mean to Jim, wondering if Kerouac, too, had been a Sentinel…

I love it that Naomi met Jack in San Francisco, though I wouldn’t have thought he’d be all that impressed with her! (Read ‘After Me the Deluge’ written by Kerouac in 1969, to see what Jack thought about hippies).

Like all of Martha’s stories, this is incredibly beautifully written.  If you haven’t read this already, I highly recommend that you do.

This is my last rec this time around. I hope I found a few things you enjoyed.

10:36 am Ice by twoweevils (NC-17)

Hi, I’m fanmouse and I am driving the crack_van for NCIS this month. I had a little personal revelation while trying to compile my list for the month: I really like Tony. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I thought I disliked him, I just didn’t realize that I liked him as much as I do. See, I thought I watched this series for Gibbs (two reasons: Mark Harmon is HOT and I have many personality traits in common with Gibbs, even if there are no ‘B’s in my name), and Tony was just an ensemble cast member. Or maybe it’s that I like the ways people write about him, because every story on my list features Tony, either alone or in relationship with another character. Well, I suppose wanting [to keep an eye on] Tony is another trait I share with Gibbs. * g *

On with the recs:

Why this must be read: Hurt/comfort is an extremely popular vehicle for first time, and the Weevils do a great job with it. “Ice” is a post-ep tag for “Under Covers,” in which Tony took a beating. M & K Weevil have a wonderful, evocative style, here’s a sample (the boys are drinking scotch):

Gibbs put his glass down and crossed the narrow kitchen. He tilted Tony's chin up to the light and looked at the damage. "This is where you need the ice, DiNozzo." He reached two fingers into Tony's glass and fished out half an ice cube. Tony willed himself not to flinch as Gibbs touched the ice to his lip. He watched Gibbs's face. Intense. Concerned. And maybe something else.

"What am I gonna do with you, DiNozzo?" Gibbs murmured as he wiped the drippings from the ice off Tony's chin with his thumb. "You just keep doing this to me, don't you?"

“Boss, I—“

Can't you just feel the Ice? (or is that heat?)

Hey guys, I'm [profile] 50thousandtearz and I'll be driving The X-Files van this month. Got into the fandom about a year and a half ago, and I'm devastated that I missed out on all the fun while it was airing. I'm a hardcore MSR shipper, and I'll try to toss in some Doggett/Reyes and gen, but there will definitely be no slash this month, sorry.

Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Increasing Workplace Productivity
Why this must be read: I highly recommend anything by prufrock's love, but especially this one (one of my favorite fanfics ever.) The story is comprised of several pieces that each take a day out of a few consecutive months and document Mulder and Scully's slowly growing relationship. I love the gradualness of this story, the small steps they take together, the abruptly tender moments and the humorous jibes. It also does a nice job attempting to clarify Mulder's past romantic entanglements.

I’m Rochefort and I’ll be driving The Sentinel van this month. I’m fairly new to the fandom but have read so much good stuff in the time I’ve been here that I could post a rec a day for months. I’m a slasher first and foremost but also dip into gen occasionally. You won't be getting too many gen recs this month, though. *g*

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lit_gal
Author Website: Worshipping The Geeks

Why this must be read: Recovery Epic is a series of episodic vignettes from Blair’s pov, charting his personal and professional progress, firstly as he struggles through the pain of making a life for himself away from Cascade and Jim, and later, on his return to the North West. It’s set after the series ends and is gen-ish for the first two thirds, then slash for the final stretch.

The characterisations are pin-sharp; the author builds on canon confidently and convincingly; and grown-up Blair is a joy to read. lit_gal is also exceptionally skilled with OCs, of which I’m usually more than a bit wary. But here they’re wonderful to a man and woman, enhancing the story and the main characters without ever trying to draw the attention onto themselves.

A little taste... )

Recovery Epic is a fabulous introduction to The Sentinel.
