Fandom: BAND OF BROTHERS Pairing: Dick Winters/OMC Author on LJ: devilcAuthor Website: The Speculations of DevilChildWhy this must be read:Mid-series our protagonist is sent on a 48-hour leave to Paris, where he encounters a French teenage boy on the metro who triggers a particularly traumatic battle flashback. The real Dick Winters called this scene "stupid" and fandom lore has it he went on to say the setup makes it look like he's trying to pick the kid up. Yes, like that. And yes, it really does. There are many ways writing this pairing could have been a disaster but DevilChild managed to write a story that is both gritty and understated, without overdoing the angst or overstaying our welcome in this moment in time. It's one of those fics I'd one day like to read as an original work. He saw the shape of the youth's body, white as bone, gleaming dimly in the near dark, and wondered about his body, with his tanned hands and face contrasting his own whiteness, and remembered the first girl he kissed, and the way the grass smelled on that picnic. The Boy On The Train

Fandom: MISCELLANEOUS JOHNNY DEPP MOVIES (Secret Window) Pairing: Mort Rainey/OMC Author on LJ: melodywildeAuthor Website: at fanfiction.netWhy this must be read: Sometimes you find a fanfic that's even better than the original movie, you know? Melody Wilde succeeds wildly (pun intended) where the movie failed. The movie gave us the one psychological twist for an ending, but Melody's story is so deeply layered with versions of "what is reality" that by the middle of the story you're just chortling with glee. Mort Rainey still lives in his cabin, despite the hatred of the townsfolk who think he's a murderer, when he gets a visit from a fan. Miguel Bain, an assassin by profession, has developed a passion for the reclusive author, which he satisfies in violent, non-consensual, and very hawt scenes. Bain explains to Rainey what it's like to have an evil that lives in your head and makes you do bad things, and Rainey begins to think he might know more about that than he'd thought . . . This is brilliant, dark, hot genius. Read it even if you didn't see the movie. It won't matter. SECRET WINDOW at IMDB( excerpt )Secrets

Fandom: NCIS Pairing: Gibbs/DiNozzo Author on LJ: Author's website: www.squidge.org/~peja/cgi-bin/viewuser.php?uid=2854Why this must be read: Simply put, it makes me cry.
Other than that, I thought I would include an Alternate Universe recommendation this month—not the cast with different jobs, but something slightly supernatural/fantasy-ish. In this case, there’s more to Tony than meets the eye.
A taste: Thankfully the day ended reasonably calmly and Gibbs all but fled. He could still feel that comforting warmth running throughout his body from where Tony had bumped into him and it was driving him mad. He’d felt it before but for the life of him he couldn’t remember where. It was driving him insane and he mentally clawed at the feeling trying to keep it within him.
He’d started off the day filled with remorse. The anniversary of his father’s funeral but it wasn’t that that caused his heart to ache this time every year. No it was something else, something from his childhood that hovered at the edge of his memories but never really came clearly to mind. It drove him mad every year as he tried to recall why he always felt such a loss inside and he had a feeling it wasn’t entirely about his father. He’d been four years old, he’d barely remembered the man, as bad as that sounded. Kendreague

Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN Pairing: None Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: Meg's PageWhy this must be read:Set in the early days of the seven, this little story focuses on Ezra and him being called out. What I like about this is how the rest of the seven still back one of their own, despite their new association, and how the town reflects on that. It also highlights something we often forget... that these boys are dangerous :) Trouble

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: none Author on LJ: true_britAuthor Website: her gen is preserved here, while her slash is sheltered here. Why this must be read:In this unique story, nothing is what you expect it to be. Instead of its conventional meaning, holocaust here signifies a burnt offering or sacrifice. Starsky’s survival post- Sweet Revenge also doesn’t have the repercussions we’ve come to expect within gen or slash fanfic. Instead, Nik confronts us with the ugly side of recovery, specifically the self-destructive isolation of supporting a loved one through a long, painful recuperation. Nonetheless, this is a story of hope, even though the journey there takes us down another road less traveled in this fandom. Instead of the traditional view of Starsky and Hutch as a self-sufficient relationship, rescue comes from outside their tight partnership. Nicola’s Huggy Bear not only shines as a fully-realized character, but he also provides credible, much needed back-up for a tormented Hutch. Love it or hate it, Holocaust is a powerful story that will challenge your beliefs about the world of Starsky and Hutch. Holocaust

Attn. Drivers: Tomorrow is the last Friday of the month, which means it's time for Friday Night Drive-In, a.k.a. Fan Vid Recs! Reccers may post 1 vid rec for their fandom, formatted as follows:
Subject Line: VID REC: Fandom - Song Title
Vidder: Musical artist: Pairing: Vidder on LJ: Vidder's website: Why this vid kicks ass:
Because the vidder community has some unique ownership issues, it’s important that reccers be extra careful when making vid recs. Depending on the vidder’s preferences regarding public access to their work, please link your rec in the appropriate manner:
1. If the video is publicly accessible, direct link to the web page the vid is linked on, or if it’s the vidder’s request, to the HTML splash page of their site.
or…
2. Link to the site with instructions on acquiring the password, if the site is protected – do not reveal the password yourselves.
or…
3. Provide contact info for the vidder if their vids are only available privately (tapes, dvd-R’s, collections, etc.).
Do not: Hotlink, i.e. link directly to the video file rather than the webpage. Re-upload videos that a vidder has removed from the web. Delay in removing a vid rec if requested to do so by the vidder.
