01:04 am As Ordinary Things Often Do by Doyle (PG)
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Rose/Sergeant Benton, Martha/Harry Sullivan
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4
Author Website: exitseraphim.net
Why this must be read:

This just might be my favourite fic in the history of ever. It was written for me in a ficathon where I’d requested these two pairings (my crack OTPs) as well as the idea that “genetic transfer through kissing” could have hilarious, time-travelling, crime-solving, lesbian possibilities for Rose and Martha. Doyle manages to turn this silliness into something that, while still very funny, is also extremely well written, has absolutely dead-on characterization, and is packed with small truths about time travel and choices. With the bonuses of neat AU turns off of canon, a cameo by another woman who’s been kissed by the Doctor, the Brigadier, swimsuits that take hours to do up, cracks on Torchwood, K-9 and UNIT dating problems, a Harry who’s still quite the navy man, and a last line for Benton that broke my heart into happy pieces – and especially, pairings that really truly totally work omg – this is, on the whole, a fantastic piece of work.

03:15 pm Countdown by Sarah (G)
Fandom: THE MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: ambiguously slashy...Napoleon/Illya, depending on your interpretation
Author on LJ: [profile] wiccagirl24
Author's Website: archives can be found at [profile] wiccaficca as well as the original fic communities (in this case, [community profile] muncle)
Why this must be read:

It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that this piece is my favorite variation on "the Lady and the Tiger" paradox, although such a label doesn't give the author anywhere near enough credit for the subtle comprehensiveness of this character study and sheer urgency of Sarah's tone.  I'm  amazed by (and envious of) authors who need so few words to convey the complex emotionality of a situation.  Sarah's captured the spirit of our guys with relatively little dialogue and the unspoken dynamics of their relationship.  Lazy and cliché as this sounds, less often is more.

11:23 pm Forgetting to Fall by Kellifer-fic (R)
Fandom: SUPERNATURAL
Pairing: None. Gen.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kellifer_fic
Author's Website: None. User info page has her master fic lists by fandom.
Why this must be read: Really, this is a rec for Kellifer's whole series of wingfic. As I noted in a previous rec, the main attraction in SPN is the relationship between the brothers. Kellifer is another who's adept at capturing the brotherly banter and the deep devotion between Sam and Dean.

Most wingfic starts with a premise that the wings are something external, brought on by a curse or mysterious circumstance. What sets Kellifer's stories apart is the notion that Sam was born with his wings...and yet, she still manages to pretty closely--and ingeniously--reconcile that idea with canon.

Excerpt. )

I'll admit to not being widely read on wing-fic, but even so, I find it to be a fresh and unusual take on a well-loved fandom cliche, full of both heartbreak and humor. If you haven't already read these fics, I think you're missing out on a wonderful treat. Give them a shot. And don't forget to feed the author.
