02:46 am Sympathy for the Devil by Carcassi (PG-13)
Fandom: SMALLVILLE
Pairings: Chloe/Lex, Chloe/Clark
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] carcassi
Author Website: www.livejournal.com/users/carcassi
Why this must be read: Superficially nothing much happens in this story. Lex comes to visit Chloe as she's recovering from her actual death. In fact, much of what he says to her might even be considered polite and pleasant concern, but it's anything but. Carcassi is able to take this one encounter and add to it a tension (both sexual and stressful) that leaves and indelible impression on the reader. Any conversation with Lex is frought with danger and any one between him and Chloe moves like a chess match. Here it's a grand master competition with both her safety and Clark's on the line and, in the end, you still aren't sure who earned the honor of yelling "Checkmate!"

Excerpt:

As she turned away to blow her nose, she looked briefly at Clark’s “E.T.” card. Lex, following her glance, inspected the card, and she saw his expression brighten with interest.

She tensed immediately, her brief moment of sympathy forgotten. Crap. As if Lex didn’t already have more than enough reasons to make an alien/Clark connection. She wished there’d been time to hide the card; it was the last thing she’d wanted Lex to notice.

His raised eyebrows confirmed her fears. “From Clark, I assume? How appropriate.”

She deflected his look with a shrug. “I don’t know what you mean.”

“For a bright investigative reporter,” he remarked wryly, “it’s amazing how little you see.”

Why this must be read:

I am really bad about sending feedback to authors. Essentially, I don't. But, back in November of 2003 I sent the following to a new member of SentinelAngst about her first fanfic story:

"Well done! I like how you capture how early Blair and Jim were in
their relationship - friends already, with some shared experiences,
but still feeling their way."

The author, Fluterbev, is now one of the best known in TS fandom. The story is an excellent example of the TS fanfic sub-genre known as the 'Cypher Missing Scene.'
