12:00 am Faith and Practice in Religion Today by Eli (R)
Fandom: THE HISTORY BOYS
Pairing: Scripps/Posner
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rainfire_dancer
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read:

Because it looks at Scripps/Posner through a lens of religious practices and ceremonies, which makes so much sense, given Scripps' relationship with religion and Posner's Judaism. It's far more than that, of course; it's the evolution of Scripps and Posner's romantic relationship, four important incidents out of their lives, and the language is lyrical and evocative without falling off into triteness or sappiness. And we really get to see their flaws, Posner's depression and self-deprecation, Scripps not knowing how or when to take action. But they're both such open, loving people at heart, and that sometimes makes everything all right even when it's really not. Plus, we get great glimpses of Dakin, Irwin, Lockwood, and Akthar, each of whom grow up (or don't) in their own wonderfully realistic ways. Just overall a really insightful, lovely piece.

01:38 am Exam Season by Tari Gwaemir [G]
Fandom: Prince of Tennis
Pairing: None. [Fudoumine] Ibu Shinri + Kamio Akira, friendship
Author: Tari Gwaemir
Website: Infinity
Rating: [G]

Why this fic must be read:

Fudoumine is a public school, not an escalator school, which means that its students are required to undergo rigorous placement exams at the end of their senior year for the high school of their choice. These exams are so all-consuming that there is little time or energy left for amateur sports. In Fudoumine, where the right to even have a competitive tennis team, was hard-won, this loss is particularly poignant and Ibu Shinri feels it every time he runs into his old teammate, Kamio Akira. Tari Gwaemir tackles this with a deft touch.

Exam Season.

02:32 am Mostly the Same by Rachel Wilder (PG-13)
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
Pairing: None
Author on LJ[livejournal.com profile] rachel_wilder
Author Website:http://www.thesamebigsky.com/
Why this mustbe read:
Rachel has a fantastic understanding of the characters, and her voices are spot on as Jason and Tim have their first big outing after Jason's accident. The fear and insecurity are poignant and real, but the deep friendship and affection between Jason and Tim shines through every word.

11:33 am Songvid Oddities: Gilda - Rock Steady
Vidder: aycheb
Musical artist: All Saints
Pairing: Gilda/Johnny/Ballin
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] aycheb
Vidder's website: vid tag
Why this vid kicks ass: I love black and white movies. Really, there's something about the texture of the light and also, perhaps, the way that melodrama was allowed in the plots without anyone being embarrassed about it. Love! And then I found this songvid by [livejournal.com profile] aycheb, which takes its source from the gorgeously black and white Gilda. The result? Several of my favourite things, all wrapped up in one finger-snapping package: a noir love triangle, in which Rita Hayworth is fought over by two gangsters. Love! Not to mention singing, dancing, amazing spangly costumes, flippy hair, sharp suits and swords hidden in canes. So much love! I think I spontaneously melted after watching this. GUH, people! Rita Hayworth is so hot, which is hardly news, but I had managed to never seen one of her films before, so it was a wonderful surprise for me.

Even if old movies aren't your thing, this songvid is a total delight.

12:46 pm Star Quilt by Rose Po (PG)
Fandom: EMERGENCY
Pairing: none really
Author on LJ: unknown

Why this must be read:

It's total crack!fic... it's a death!fic... it's everything I hate in fic.

Yet in the capable hands of Rose Po, this story will draw in the most jaded reader.  Rose has created an entire canon in her stories, mostly centering around John Gage's Indian heritage (which the series addressed a few times).  I promise you will want to read everything else she has ever done, once you read Star Quilt:

01:42 pm Three Views of Sam by Amy, PG-13
Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Gen (very mild Sam Tyler/Annie Cartwright)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] amy_wolf
Author Website: Amy's List of Fic
Why this must be read:

We're getting more good writers into the Life on Mars fandom every day. [livejournal.com profile] amy_wolf is one of them. She brought this offering as her first foray into the fandom and it *glows*. These are three interlinked ficlets, Annie's thoughts on Sam after three separate incidents post episode 1.04, post episode 1.07 and post episode 2.01.

08:10 pm Scenes From A Hotel In Prague by SarahMc (PG)
Fandom: THE PERSUADERS!
Pairing: Lord Brett Sinclair/Danny Wilde
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] scarffetish
Why this must be read:

At first glance, these could be slices of life for a comfortably non-monogamous Danny and Brett – but while it's not a first time, it's not exactly established relationship fic either, because the exact nature of their arrangement seems to still be under negotiation, and I suspect only one of them understands why that is.

This well-written fic is fun, frustrating, and entirely believable (except for how I'm not sure a guy who wears a gold-striped muumuu would be so quick to judge another's attire), all of which makes for a memorably hot and funny final scene.

08:31 pm Tell Beauty How She Blasteth, by tree_and_leaf (PG-13)
Fandom: Lord Peter Wimsey
Pairing: Peter/Harriet
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] tree_and_leaf
Author Website:
Rating: I've rated this fic at PG-13, because it really is not lighthearted.
Why this must be read: Fic just doesn’t come better than this, an AU ending to Strong Poison, in which Peter does not save the day. It’s absolutely gut-wrenching, but beautifully characterised, horribly plausible and a must-read for any Sayers fan.

The trial had not gone well for the defence )
