10:36 am Light Bending Backwards by Insane Troll Logic (PG)
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing: None: Doctor, Jack
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] trolllogicfics
Author Website: Fic Master List

Why this must be read: Because it is one of those rare pieces of fanfiction that totally changes everything you thought you knew about canon, without actually changing a thing. And that is rare. In fact, I can't really say anything else about this story without ruining the reveal. Read it for wonderful characterization, beautifully sparse writing, and brain-breaking plot.

Fandom: GETBACKERS
Pairing: Paul, Ban
Length: One-shot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] zanzarawrites

Why this must be read:

Paul doesn't get much attention in fanfic; probably because he's older and not as dorky-angsty as the rest of the cast. This is an interesting look at Paul and Ban's first few encounters, especially given certain spoilery events that take place late in the manga. Knowing something about Paul's history probably helps understand this story, but I don't think it's absolutely necessary.

"Gimme a coffee and the biggest thing I can get with whatever's left," he said, and pushed the money across the bar to Paul.

Paul took it, and began to count it slowly, looking at the boy more than the cash. Dark hair, blue eyes, same fucking grin, even - his son? He briefly wondered if Midou sent this kid as some sort of mind game. He wouldn't have put it past an expert of illusions.

The boy took the staring as some sort of challenge, and glared back through his purple lenses.

12:19 pm Heroic by Kiera Kingsley (NC17)
Fandom: NUMB3RS
Pairing: Don, Charlie (one short bit of one-sided Don/Charlie, but Gen overall)
Length: ~3,300 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] queen_kiwi
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read: It’s canon that Charlie is still trying to impress his big brother and that he ‘can’t say no’ to Don, and this is a lovely, ansgty, gritty (in turns) look at how Charlie sees Don.

And Charlie. Charlie, face dead white, Charlie, disheveled and wild-eyed, Charlie is all Don sees, and Charlie catches at his brother’s hand urgently, and Charlie’s fingers are warm around his and Don’s fingers are warm around Charlie’s, and they both hold on tight.

When Don was thirty-six and Charlie was thirty, Charlie learned that heroes are ordinary people who do extraordinary things.

12:29 pm A Matter of Quality by akane42me (G)
Fandom: The Man from UNCLE
Pairing: None
Author on lj: [livejournal.com profile] akane42me
Why this must be read:

This is a very short but very funny story that was written for the "Guess the Author" challenge on [livejournal.com profile] mfuwss and posted anonymously (so don't be confused when you follow the link to a post by [livejournal.com profile] agent_anon). It was subsequently revealed to have been written by [livejournal.com profile] akane42me, who thereby proved that she can create not only some of the most heartbreaking stories in MfU fandom, but also some of the wittiest. I won't say what it's about, because half the fun of this story is working out exactly what's going on. I will say, however, that the scenario all the authors in the challenge had to write about was "Illya tests a gadget." I think I can safely say that [livejournal.com profile] akane42me's response was, to say the least, unique.

Fandom: Stargate SG-1
Pairing: refrence to Jack/Daniel and Sam/Janet
Length: 9K
Author Website: The Comfort Zone

Why this must be read:

Cassie is taking care of Jack and their nightly ritual is going through a box with pictures of Daniel. It’s sad and sweet as Cassie recalls the events in the photos and wonders how much she really remembers and how much is just what Jack told her.

06:09 pm Finding Himself, by Minisinoo. (R - NC-17)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Cedric/Hermione
Length: about 320,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] minisinoo
Author Website: http://www.themedicinewheel.net/

Why this must be read:

This story takes a tiny fact - what if Cedric had survived - and spins it from there. [livejournal.com profile] minisinoo takes lesser known characters (and OCs, but don't let that scare you!) and gives them a rich and rounded personality. I enjoyed so much the look into the house Hufflepuff of which we don't get much to know about in canon. This version made it into my personal canon. It's rich and detailed and realistic.

The plot keeps close with canon, as far as it can of course, but seeing things from another perspective gives everything an interesting twist.

There's a sequel - "Dulce et decorum est" - that is still a wip. You can find it via the author page.
