Why this must be read:

This isn't your usual first time story. In this one, there's a twist. Illya isn't trying to get Napoleon in bed; he's simply trying to keep Napoleon from tiring of him as a partner. So he decides to change, which creates unforeseen consequences, including Napoleon thinking Illya has been replaced by a double.

Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Characters: Duncan/ Methos
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jenna_thorn
Author Website: Fic on Skyehawke
Why this must be read: This is not exactly a new concept: a post "Methos" fic, Joe watching Duncan and Methos spar. It's the writing that sets this story apart. The words Jenna-thorn uses are perfectly chosen, evocative. Sometimes a thousand words are worth a thousand pictures.

This is the kind of situation that leads to songs in minor chords.

08:25 pm Armed Intervention, by Paula Stiles (R)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Characters: Gen: Methos, Joe
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: http:www.geocities.com/RainForest/Andes/3071/arch.html
Why this must be read: This is the first novel-length story in an unfinished series. It's about friendship, forgiveness, and ultimately, redemption: Methos and Joe, coming to terms with the past and the present. It's also about mental illness, and it is relentless and uncompromising in its portrayal of both PTSD and depression. If I hadn't already fallen in love with author's characterization, I would have loved it for that, for its courageous and ruthless portrayal of something that fandom rarely explores in any depth.

08:46 pm After the End by by Arabella and Zsenya (PG-13)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Ron/Hermione, Harry/Ginny
Length: novel length
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read: Another post-Hogwarts fic. Harry, Ron and Hermione have graduated, and the war is over. This fic deals with a dilemma familiar to us all - what exactly will you do with your life once you've finished school? It's really nice to see these characters growing up, gives me hope for myself, lol. I love how there's a large cast of characters - lots of familiar faces, plus the authors have fleshed out some of the minor characters in the books and added a couple of new ones - each with their own storyline. They may not be saving the world, but living everyday life can be just as interesting. Ginny may be a bit of a Mary Sue, but I think it's awesome, so shut up. Oh, and Sirius isn't dead, so bonus points!

11:06 pm Thirty-Seven Percent by luzula (R)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Mark Smithbauer, Mark Smithbauer/OFC
Length: ~1,800 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] luzula
Author Website: none
Why this must be read: Because [livejournal.com profile] luzula is absolutely fascinated by the story of Fraser's family and never misses an opportunity to explore the people and history of the Frasers. Here she writes about Benton as a teenager going through puberty, the same analytical, serious, logical Benton we're used to, but younger, more open, curious about his body and the world around him.

[livejournal.com profile] luzula has a deft touch with words, skillfully guiding Benton's narrative from external events to an internal contemplation of a more serious nature. She's extremely talented at showing us little domestic details that bring life to the story and make it real. The way she portrays Benton's grandparents as reserved, hard-working people who are trying to raise an unexpected teenage boy is subtly heartbreaking.
