Fandom: WATCHMEN
Pairing: gen, mentions of Doctor Manhattan/Janey Slater, Doctor Manhattan/Laurie Juspeczyk
Length: 1100 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] gabby_silang
Author Website: Author's fic on LJ
Why this must be read:

Because it's Doctor Manhattan: unstuck in time, godlike, viewing everything with the utmost scientific detachment... and yet still with the occasional remnants of humanity shining through.

It's a lovely, thought-provoking look at an intriguing character, and perfectly captures the feel of the book.

(Warning: contains major spoilers.)

Title: Different Shape of Being, by Perryvic & Kat Reitz
Pairing: Clark Kent/Lex Luthor, Bruce Wayne/Lex Luthor, plus Pairing Withheld.
Warning: Alternate Universe, Hurt/Comfort
Authors on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] perryvic & [livejournal.com profile] zaganthi
Author Website: Kat Reitz = Caffiends Asylum
Mega-Size: 63,000 Words

Why this must be read:

Ah! Gotham. Where else could Lex Nightwing Luthor unwittingly pick up Clark Superman Kent for a one-night-stand, then slink back to Bruce Batman Wayne?

Cuddler.

It was kind of cute, and Lex wouldn't begrudge the guy. He seemed a nice enough guy... Decent. Gorgeous, and he'd given Lex a wild ride. He could rest like that for a little while...

He did feel kind of comfortable like that. All too often the pretty packages were nothing but window dressing. He'd lucked out with his chance meeting in that gay club, although if he hadn't had the habit of looking into shadows he might have missed him…

He couldn't go incommunicado for long.

There was a slight sleepy sound but the other man didn't clutch at him, or wake to delay him with inconvenient questions…

It only took Lex a minute to open one of the drawers and pen out a quick, scratchy note. 'Sorry I had to go so soon. Maybe we'll see each other again. Thanks.' Another half a minute to dress, and a few seconds to flip sheets up over the man.

Then Lex left, opening the door with one last backwards glance, hoping to get one last look at the godlike man he'd just been with.

He wasn't expecting to see him propped up on one elbow watching him leave. The look in his green eyes, even in the dim light was full of a very old pain, but he didn't say a word to call him back. Just turned and lay back down, looking away from the door, staring into the darkness as if all hope had fled.

Lex closed the door behind him, and stood out in the hallway for a moment before he ran his hands back through his wavy red hair. Fuck. He never wanted to hurt anyone. He just...

Had to get going. It was going to be a long night.

09:58 am More Than Flesh and Bone by misslucyjane (NC-17)
Fandom: TORCHWOOD
Pairing: Jack/Ianto
Length: 5200 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lucyjanesparlor
Author's Website: http://misslucyjane.com
Why this must be read:

I love all of misslucyjane's writing -- she manages the rarest of feats, keeping her stories romantic in tone without drifting into the dangerous (for Torchwood) area of True Love Forever. This story in particular captures that tone perfectly, depicting an AU, pre-Fragments meeting of Jack and a younger Ianto:

The man pointed at his feet and said, "Stay right there," sternly, and ducked into the alley after them. Ianto swallowed hard and waited as he'd been told. After a few minutes he heard an odd sort of whine and saw a blue flash, and the two blokes came running out of the alley, their faces pale and their eyes wide. They ran past him without giving him a glance, and certainly no time to ask what had happened to the man in the greatcoat.

Ianto waited a moment more, and heard a shrill squawk, a fleshy sort of thump and a groan. Ianto took a deep breath and steeled himself, and went cautiously into the alley. He had nothing to use as any kind of weapon--and what had that man meant by 'it wasn't safe', anyway?--but he'd have to improvise, if it came to that.

Fandom:Buffy the Vampire Slayer/
Pairing: Spike/Tara
Author on LJ: [profile] enigmaticblues
Author Website: Here
Why this must be read:  This, this is a dark fic in places, but ultimately it's about finding redemption and finding love. Buffy is dead. Spike never came back after he went to Africa but he's returning to Sunnydale when he hears the news. He's got a couple of strays (one human, one canine) in tow. He finds the Hellmouth a different place and the people he knew very changed. Tara is running the Magic Shop and they renew their tentative friendship which slowly, gently turns to more. Spike and Tara understand each other in ways the other Scoobies couldn't.  I should also warn that if you like Xander, beware, he's not bashed, but after what he's gone through before this story happens, I understand the motivations he has in this fic and why the author did what she did.

Fandom: STARGATE: SG-1
Pairing: Sam Carter/Daniel Jackson
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] surreallis
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] jennghis_khan
Why this must be read:

A fabulous apocalypse AU. In a world where Daniel never joined the Stargate program, Sam goes looking for him. And finds him. And in a scenario in which both of them have even less than usual, we can be comforted by understanding that they still have each other. Well-told, lovely and bittersweet.

The story she tells him is fantastic.

There was a time when he had lived and breathed ancient Egypt, and his mind had been a beautiful thing to behold. He’d been unencumbered by the politics of his chosen profession and he’d thought new, edgy theories were the best, new hope of explaining the mysteries of the pyramids.

He’d written papers and made speeches, and he might have mentioned aliens a time or two before Sarah had knocked him soundly across the head and asked him if he was crazy.

Length: ~18,000 words

 The Tenth Muse's Fanfiction
Why this must be read:

The old west universe is not normally my favorite, but this story is an exception. It has Chris/Vin hurt/comfort with some Nathan/Josiah thrown in. We get some great moments with all seven of the team showing just how close the group of them are.  The Tenth Muse gives us a believable start to a Chris/Vin relationship with Chris making the first move with some help from a very approving Buck.

Thinking about it, Vin realized that ever since coming to live with Chris, his friend had barely touched him, outside helping him around. No hand on his shoulder, no light touch to his waist or arm. Frowning, Vin turned his head to catch Chris mounting his horse and riding away at a faster than necessary pace.

If Chris did have, well, feelings for me, Vin thought slowly. He’d think it taking advantage if he did something while I was still all busted up. But, does he? How could he? White men don’t go that way, from what I know. Well, I guess just ‘cause I never seen it doesn’t mean it don’t happen. I’m white and I go that way. So’s Josiah, so it makes sense there’d be others, I suppose.

Thoughts in a whirl, Vin closed his eyes and wondered if maybe he should take a fresh look at his friend.

Why this must be read:

This is an adorable little crossover with the Pixar movie Monsters Inc. I actually had alot of trouble picking out just one of Trollprincess's fics to rec as all of her work is well worth reading, but this one always stood out in my mind as an impeccably well written crossover with a great premise and one of the best endings EVER.
