Fandom: JEEVES & WOOSTER Pairing: Jeeves/Bertie Wooster Length: 6,827 words Author on LJ: woffproff Author Website: unknown Why this must be read:Bertie's friends really suck on occasion. No, really. It seems to be a minor law of Wodehouse that all characters, with the exception of Bertie himself, shall be mind-bogglingly self-absorbed and/or monomaniacal. Stupid practical jokes abound; this story, without quite breaking the bounds of good taste or what's reasonable trauma for Wodefic, shows what happens when one of these fatheaded plots gets out of hand, and also features some A+ hurt/comfort for poor whomped Bertie. Because, let's face it, you don't want to be the one who's hurt Jeeves's woobie. (And aside from anything else, the POV and language is just spot on.) ( Excerpt )Jeeves and the Red Legion

Fandom: WATCHMEN Pairing: gen Length: 135 words Author on LJ: edward_hydeAuthor Website: Author's LJ memoriesWhy this must be read:ed is the most prolific writer in Watchmen fandom. (Okay, ed is the only prolific writer in Watchmen fandom, but that's not the point.) I had trouble choosing which story to rec, because they're all fantastic. In the end I went with this one, because fun Watchmen fic is virtually impossible to find, and this story never fails to make me smile. The Rorschach POV is spot-on. (Make sure to head on over to the Memories section of ed's LJ -- there's a lot of excellent fic about Dan and Rorschach to be found there.) The Found Money Dilemma

Fandom: Bandom (Fall Out Boy, others) Pairing:Pete/Patrick Author on lj: queenofhellWhy this Must Be Read:Okay, this one might get me into trouble. I've mostly recced happy things, now it's time for something controversial. Bandslash has a lot of ex-popslashers in it, and this is sort of a bandom version of Flesh Mechanic, Not an AU. You know, the story where Justin becomes a serial killer. This is about Pete Wentz, and how he has a movement that's secret but not. It's about how Patrick gets brainwashed into the movement, about torture and sex and the dark things just under the surface of what seems to be harmless pop. A lot of people read this story, looked at their giant mound of bandom merchandise, and wondered if they hadn't accidentally joined the new Mansons. Honestly, it makes you question your involvement. queenofhell left a note at the end of her story telling people it was all right to write their own pieces for this 'verse, and now there's over 70 stories and a community ( cultverse). If you like, try out the other stories as well, most of them are good, some of them are fantastic. All are disturbing. Again, warnings for horror, disturbance, mistreatment of Patrick (which should be a felony, I agree), minor character death. It's all here. But here's the first step down the rabbit hole. It's a bit steep. ( Read more... )It's Like the Pied Piper (Only It's a Little Bit More Like a Cult)

Fandom: Pirates of the Caribbbean Characters: Jack Sparrow, Teague, OC's Length: 7,000 words Author on LJ: ballincolliqAuthor's Website: Her LJWhy this must be read...Another version of Jack Sparrow's childhood, this time set in Ireland: "Young John Teague of Dublin indulges in some gratuitous Latin with a little blasphemy on the side." This was written for prompt #56 in Live Journal's PotCFest: "How did Jack pick up all that Latin?", and ballicolliq did a fabulous job of fleshing out young!Jack in this. Fandom: SMALLVILLE Pairings: Clark Kent/Lex Luthor Length: 12,800 Words Warnings: Alternate Universe; Semi-Non-Con; Dark Author on LJ: paperbkryterAuthor's Website: WordsDVD Commentary: DVD Commentary - Muted, by AklaniWhy this must be read: This story offers the most poignant explanation for The Rift (the eventual Arch-Enemyness between Superman and Luthor) you'll ever read. This astoundingly original CLex drama is utterly compelling, even for those of us who normally reside in the land of denial4evah. Oh, yeah - and it's twisty-hot. We begin with the character portrait of Lex that is subtly off from Canon: Lex Luthor hated being dirty.
He supposed, as he entered the bathroom where a steaming tub full of lightly scented water awaited him, it stemmed from being a sickly child. Lillian had been horribly protective of him because of his asthma. It had been rather bad and Lex recalled very vividly several trips to the emergency room. Lillian had latched on to the fear that dirt only served to aggravate Lex's breathing difficulties. She kept him indoors as much as possible, making him inhale all sorts of medicinal herbs, keeping the rooms of their big rambling home in Metropolis spotlessly clean (giving the servants much grief), and rarely allowing him much in the way of physical activity. He'd always been spotlessly clean…
Sighing, he set the book down upon the ledge along the edge of the tub, and finished undressing. Lex was a sensualist. He liked the feel of his clothes slipping along his skin, and therefore always took his time undressing. He disliked rough textures, and anything too tight against his body. Only the finest silk, most delicate wools, and softest cotton were permitted to touch him. He liked it that way; he demanded it that way. Lex enjoyed nudity, but he enjoyed the caress of his clothes against his hard, lean body even more._______________________ The AU unfolds from there. I urge you to check it out. Muted, by Aklani

Fandom: FIREFLY Pairing: River/Kaylee Length: 1679 words Author on LJ: reginawrenAuthor Website: Sleeping ButterfliesWhy this must be read:This is a cute, winsome fic that brings out the sweetness of first love. Again and again they danced, reliving the same steps over and over. River looked so beautiful when she smiled. As long as they danced her eyes shone, she laughed with delight, and any hint of madness vanished. In those moments Kaylee saw clearly an image of the child River had once been before The Academy, and the beautiful woman she would grow into if only given the chance. For a few moments Kaylee wanted to dance forever so that River would never stop smiling.Serenity's Heart

done! thanks for not throwing things, i hope you found something to enjoy, etc. I imagine I'll be back, so until then, stargate yay!Fandom: STARGATE: SG-1 Pairing: Sam Carter/Cam Mitchell, but not a pairing story Author on LJ: niamaeaAuthor Website: fic index Why this must be read:Future-fic. A perfect story to have last, I think, because this story is a great coda to basically everything. The show always gives us the impression that SG-1 will journey through the stargate forever and ever. That's how we like to think of them. But of course they can't, and they won't. Soldiers fall. And our team (always our team, to each other as much as anything, no matter what) will face that gracefully. Of course they will. And goregously written. A certain theory states that even the tiniest of changes in the makeup of the universe would have utterly precluded even the possibility of sustained life. It’s one of Sam’s favorites, one of the only scientific theories she has no urge to pick apart, one that she’ll accept on faith alone.
She likes to think the universe takes care of her own, the only way she knows how. A million years into the sky

Fandom: SMALLVILLE Pairings: Clark Kent/Lex Luthor Lengths: 60,800 Words /Courtship & 58,900 Words /Wedding Author on LJ: (am researching this) Author's Website: (ditto) Why this must be read: If you were as wise and sensible a woman as Martha Kent, who worried about her vulnerable big dumb alien son's future, wouldn't you seek the most intelligent, rich, and powerful fellow around as a son-in-law? "Mrs Kent." Lex minimized all the windows on his computer, locked it with a password and rose from his chair to greet her properly. She was one of the few people he knew that deserved the courtesy. "Is there something I can do for you?" he asked, genuinely hoping there was. She waved an errant hand as she took the seat on the other side of his desk.
"Sit, Lex," she said with an air of familiarity that tweaked the corners of his mouth. "And call me Martha. I think we've known one another long enough for you do that."
"Yes, ma'am." Lex responded with deference. Even with permission, he didn't feel he'd earned this woman's respect enough to call her by her given name. He probably never would. It wasn't a dig. The formidable Mrs Kent didn't think herself above anyone. She was a good person, down to earth, the best. In Lex's opinion, even the President didn't have the right to call her by her first name. "What brings you out to the castle?" he asked, unconsciously smoothing out his clothing with a hand from breast to knee before sitting back down.
Martha tucked her hair behind her ears and shifted nervously in her chair. Lex felt his palms begin to sweat as she stared steadily at the colored blocks of glass in the windows over his head. A prickly feeling along his spine told him this was not a friendly visit.
"How do you feel about Clark?" she said abruptly breaking the stillness of the room.
Damn. No, not friendly at all. This was dangerous territory.

Fandom: THE SENTINEL Pairing: Gen Length: Long Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: TVLIT 101Why this must be read:D.L. Witherspoon was pretty much the first author I ever read when I discovered fan fiction, and I couldn't have had a better introduction. DL's writing is lively, witty, and baroque. Her Jim is grandly heroic and compassionate, but nevertheless human and vulnerable. Blair and Simon are his stalwart companions.
Quite a few of DL's many stories have already been rec'd. If I could I would rec all the rest, but I selected her Gates of Hell series, which include some of her darker stories.
In 'Bayou' a psychic connection with an abused child takes Jim, Blair, and Simon to New Orleans where they discover powers beyond their expectations. The story is haunting and heart-breaking.
The following stories in the series delve even deeper into the supernatural, and include crossovers with Millennium, Highlander, Friday the Thirteenth, Dante's Divine Comedy (sort of), and Touched by an Angel. Jim encounters demons and darkness, becomes a warrior for the archangel Michael, and confronts Lucifer himself.
