Fandom:  Smallville
Pairing:  Clark/Lex
Length:  Approx. 22,900

Author website:  Visions of Pretty Boys

Why this must be read:

Anything by Lady Ra is worth reading, but this is my favorite of her Smallville stories.  It is an Alien!Clark story and deals with Lex's efforts to help Clark with his alien physiology.  But it is so much more than that - it is Clark coming to terms with just how different he is, it is his parents realization that they don't know their son as well as they thought and their changing perception of Lex and his role in their son's life, it is Lex's ability to deal with anything (in fact this story has the best unflappable!Lex ever written) thrown his way no matter how bizarre, and it is the very beginning of the idea of how Clark can use his abilities in the future.  There is angst, humor, drama, violence, sex, fear, unhappiness, confusion, anger, acceptance, and relief.  Even better, all of this takes place over the course of a single night.  After you are done reading it, you are left with the feeling of have just finished an intense roller coaster ride.  So buckle up and join me for the ride of you life right here.

02:31 am Blame it on the Dog, by TheSecondBatgirl (PG-13)
Fandom: NEWSIES
Pairing: Spot/Race
Length: 2,000-ish

Author Website: TSB's Fic List
Why this must be read:

The great thing about a fandom that happily accepts AU stories is that you can put the characters in pretty much any setting you want. Sure, you can just put them in a modern-day high school, but you can also make them Western adventurers or astronauts or dragon slayers.

Or you can make them mailmen.

This author takes that basic premise - Spot Conlon is a modern-day mailman - and weaves it into an adorable, humorous little story that perfectly captures the bitterness Spot would feel in that position. And, of course, there's also the slashy plot with Racetrack, here a bachelor stock broker with an angry dog and a perpetual smirk. Despite the wildly different setting, this fic captures the best of the fanon Spot/Race dynamic, with excellent voices and hilariously drawn one-upmanship. It's a great, fun little read, and I recommend it highly.

11:17 pm When the Sky Falls Down by Jenn (NC-17)

Why this must be read:

I love all of Jenn's Smallville stories, however, this one has my favorite Clark voice.  He is just so fatalistic here and so true to life.  Anyone who has ever been on a disastrous date can empathize with the boys in this story.

Clark's pretty sure it all started when he said, yes, when Lex said, you want to go to a movie?

"Fucking *hell*, I don't even have my cell phone." Lex pats his empty pockets down again, making sure that they are, in fact, as lint-only as they were seconds before. Clark nods. They don't have a phone, because they left that in the Porsche currently stalled up on tenth street, right before they got in the cab, right after Lex realized that staring hard at the steering wheel would not, in fact, force obedience.

You can only laugh at all of the things that go wrong for these two in the course on an evening.  It is a light and fun read but also gives us a glimpse of the friendship between Clark and Lex that we never got to see enough of on the show.
