02:18 am Sinking Is All I Had Planned by hold_that_thought (R)
Fandom: ANGEL
Pairing: Wesley/Lilah
Length: 2,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sallyanne
Author Website: Let it Burn
Why this must be read: A series of 20 drabbles about Wes and Lilah's relationship ("You owe me a dollar!"). hold_that_thought manages to pack quite a punch into only a hundred words at a time. What a skill. The drabbles range from funny and kinky to hurtful and tragic - all the various emotions possible in this ship. This is one of the best Wes/Lilah fics I have ever read, hands down.

06:08 am The Sentinel’s Gratuitously Detailed Episode Guide by Zelempa (Adult)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: none, but a lot of innuendo of Jim/Blair
Length: series: medium size for each episode
Author on LJ: [personal profile] zelempa
Author Website:  http://www.merples.com/index.shtml
Why this must be read:   Because these put the *crack* in your viewing pleasure!

Okay, admit it. You’ve watched the show with equal parts affection and smirkiness. Each episode has at least one plot hole you could drive a Ford truck through *and* at least one remark that makes you wonder where these guys are on the Kinsey scale. This episode guide is right up your alley. Like a cross between Fractured Fairy Tales and Sports Central, you have a ring-side seat with in-depth analysis delivered with tongue firmly planted in cheek.

Reminiscent of [personal profile] joandarck’s The Gayest Show on Earth, Zelempa happily points out the touching and the subtext. She goes well beyond to identify the continuity gaffes and cheesy plots, but also provides insightful analysis. Underneath it all, you hear her love for the show and the characters. She points out why we continue to love The Sentinel, warts and all, more than 12 years after it first aired.

I could quote something from every episode, but I’ll invite you instead to just start with your favorite and work through them all. You’ll be chuckling, nodding and saying “Awwwww” before you know it.

And there’s pictures too!!

08:16 am Four Ways William Scully Got Picked Up From Daycare by naraht (PG)
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Length: one-shot
Author on LJ: [profile] emily_shore
Author Website: fanfic tag on LJ
Why this must be read:

In general, I find a lot of X-Files fanfic featuring William to be unbelievably treacly. Not this piece. naraht gives a lovely little glimpse into William as a toddler. It's a realistic portrait of him, not too cute. Have I mentioned that I'm an absolute sucker for stories with a third-party look at our favorite characters? The author creates a slightly befuddled original character with a perceptive view of the Mulder/Scully relationship and what they'd be like as parents. In addition, this story features cameos by several of my all time favorite characters. This AU story will make you wish that the series could have ended like this.

09:04 am Things that Stay the Same by goldy_dollar (PG)
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Author-Created!Eleventh Doctor/Rose Tyler
Length: 2,212 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] goldy_dollar
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] teawiles
Why this must be read: I never actually thought Tennant was going any where at the end of "The Stolen Earth," but I think the possibility of what would have happened if the Doctor *had* regenerated at that moment is a really interesting plot bunny. [livejournal.com profile] goldy_dollar is the only author I've seen explore it.

09:23 am Crossing Boundaries by Aiwritingfic and Chaineddove (PG-13)
Fandom: HIKARU NO GO
Pairing: Isumi/Le Ping
Length: 7 chapters/~28,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] aiwritingfic and [livejournal.com profile] chaineddove
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] apples_for_me and here
Why this must be read:

I know, I know, the pairing is probably making you go WTF. However, such is my confidence for these two authors that I know if you just give this fic a try, by the end of it you will believe in this pairing, too. When this fic was still a WIP, seeing an update made me squee, and every chapter made me laugh aloud.

Two things that I have to mention as outstanding in this fic are the cameo appearances (the authors truly have a gift for fleshing out minor characters) and the setting which feels so authentic (and not like Japan as told by a random fangirl).

Quagis, ya'll, I'm Morgul and I'll be doing the backseat driving for Sweeney Todd this month.

Fandom: Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Pairing: Not-Quite Sweeney/Lovett
Length: 592
Author: Azurelacroix
Author Website: azurelacroix
Why this must be read: It's a relatively simple, almost sweet fic in a fandom that has very little of that sort of thing.

05:50 pm Power Corrupts (The Absolute Absolution Remix) by alara_r (PG)
Fandom: STAR TREK: Voyager
Pairing: Kes, Q
Length: short
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] alara_r
Author Website: Alara's Happy-Happy Text-Only Page
Why this must be read:

The problem I had with a lot of Voyager episodes is that they would raise moral issues and then address them only in platitudes.

This fic doesn't do that. This deals with Kes after "The Gift," in which she evolved into a powerful energy being and left the show. She has power, but no experience in how to use that power, and no one to guide her. When the Borg threaten Earth and the people she loves, she wipes them out.

All of them. Every single one. Along with everyone who any connection whatsoever to them. The Q put her on trial for genocide.

Most stories about trials are boring, moralistic, and formulaic. This story is how to do a trial right. Everyone has something to say, everyone is in character, and no punches are pulled. There is no easy answer to the questions raised, no happy ending possible. Neither side is entirely right, and neither is entirely wrong. This fic is about learning to deal with consequences and ambiguities. I thought about trying to give an excerpt, but it's a short piece and no part can be excised from the whole. You just have to go read it.

10:04 pm Peppermint Blue by rydra-wong (PG)
Fandom: STARGATE SG1
Pairing: Cam Mitchell/Teal'c
Length: 773 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rydra_wong
Author Website: Memories
Why this must be read:

This was written for the hugs, cuddles and kisses challenge (like a PG version of the porn battle), so it's short and sweet. The whole thing happens very late at night, and by the end, you're so sucked in to the moment that it's weird to look up and find the sun shining outside the window (which is pretty impressive for less than a thousand words).

Plus, it's Teal'c and Cam, and first kisses, and coming together despite all your differences, and the whole thing aches in the best way.

No excerpts this time, because it's only 773 words and I don't want to spoil it.
