Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Length: 39k Author on LJ: silver_chipmunk Author Website: Silver Chipmunk's Corner of the Forest Why this must be read:On this day of remembrance, I am reminded of this sweet story, fictional characters embodying the fear and worries we all suffered on this day seven years ago. Written as a way to work out her own feelings, Silver Chipmunk gives us permission to work through ours, and can lean on her story to feel as if we are not alone. Written sweetly and with respect. Starsky turned sad eyes to him. “You know, Hutch, I thought the Twin Towers were ugly when they were first built.”
“Nothing wrong with thinking that, Babe. A lot of people did.”( More excerpt below the cut ) The Only Thing I Can Be Sure Of

Fandom: STARGATE SG1 Pairing: John Sheppard/Cameron Mitchell Length: series Author on LJ: bluflamingo Author Website: Author's Fic Index Why this must be read:I went back and forth, back and forth about reccing this story as just SG-1, but since it's set completely in the SG-1 universe, I figured I could. I enjoyed reading this. I like how hard John has to think about this. That inner struggle seems very true to him, as well as to Cam. I enjoyed reading the remix from Cam's POV. It dovetailed really well with the original story and I liked how Spaces in the Light fit into the episode, Collateral Damage. Home Fires is a sweet little follow up. Nicely done. Shadows’verse

Fandom: HOUSE M.D Pairing: House/Cuddy Author on LJ: zauberer_sirinAuthor Website: 42numbersWhy this must be read:The author calls this 'thirty-five essays in love and friendship'. And so it is, not all of them long, but each and every one of them beautiful as the characters progress with their lives after the events of the Season 4 finale. The gradual evolution is what really makes the story work for me, and the fact that it manages to incorporate the entire cast into the story. The House and Cuddy relationship as zauberer_sirin writes it is a wonderful fleshing out of the glimpses we get on the show. House is not fooling anyone and Cuddy is not fooling herself.
`It’s freezing out here,´ she says. House hasn’t touched his sandwich. `And I know the only reason you are spending so much time with me is because Wilson can’t see you right now.´
He shrugs.
She is smart enough to realize he is trying to make her feel pity; but she is Cuddy enough to stay, anyway. She stays, and wonders if it’s a recurring theme for her or if it’s a recurring theme for them. But there’s no them because there’s no us and Cuddy has too many years of experience at this game not to know better. This is not about her, this is about Wilson.
`It’s freezing out here,´ she repeats, but, freezing or not, she stays.
She always stays. little bombs

Fandom: STAR WARS Pairing: Anakin Skywalker/Obi-Wan Kenobi friendship Length: 8,541 words Author on LJ: smittywingWebsite: Smittyworld 2.0Why this must be read: In the world of Star Wars, there is a downstairs paneled rec(reational) room for genfic for smittywing's stories, written by a master of the light touch. A charming yet vulnerable Anakin Skywalker costars with a Master who wants dearly to do his best, and his best means isolating himself and his new Padawan on a faraway world to engender their training bond in privacy. This fic is the first of the completed eight-part The Malastare Stories, also to be found by following the link; each is approximately the same length and can be read as stand alones. I found this series touching and fun, with nice characterization and honest Star Warsy action. The House That Obi-Wan Built

Fandom: Horatio Hornblower Pairing: Bush/Côtard Length: ~2500 words Author Website: LJ memoriesWhy this must be read:One of the best aspects of a dual canon -- movies and books which overlap in some regards and diverge in others -- is the way it allows a writer to pick and choose elements from both 'verses to suit her purposes. Major Côtard is emblematic of this sort of symbiotic strength: an incidental player in the books, the movieverse fleshes him out into a compelling character well worthy of further exploration. HH is a fandom packed with talented writers, but randomalia is among the very best, and "Hold Sway" a superb example of the taut, yet lyrical style which she uses to such great effect. Again, the Bush we see here is the older, dispossessed Bush of Sheerness (some spoilers for both Flying Colours and Loyalty are present), and the older Côtard randomalia extrapolates is entirely at home in the later period of the novels -- but perhaps the deftest touch of all is in the construction of a Hornblower who, though absent, pervades the story and seems to occupy all of the spaces between Bush and Côtard. Fandom: DOCTOR WHO Pairing: Seven/Peri Author on LJ: elliptic_eyeAuthor Website: Profile on TeaspoonLength: ~2,000 words Why this must be read: This is an incredible piece: just beautifully written, thoughtful, and also really, unexpectedly, hot. The Doctor here is Seven to a T, and Peri comes across as very sympathetic, very real. This story goes into such depth in so few words about the universe the Doctor and his companions inhabit: the idea of needing vs. wanting, forgetting, remembering, and creating your own history. It's twisty and imaginative, and wraps up the good and the bad all together into one amazing, if at times somewhat deliciously uncomfortable, whole. It's a fabulous piece of work.
