07:46 am Big Name Death Eater by Shiv (PG-13)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Snape/Hermione
Length: 49,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] shiv5468
Author Website: Her Obscurus Books site and Her Yahoo Group
Why this must be read: Hermione (who has been nudged into taking a teaching position at Hogwarts for "the good of the Order") comes across a dirty, bleeding Severus Snape lying on the Quidditch pitch late one night. As if she had somehow read the dozens of Snape/Hermione stories that begin this way, she naturally assumes that her colleague's desperate state is the result of his dangerous work as a double agent. Instead, as she soon discovers, Snape's state is the result of a night spent drinking with "the Lads."

A taste of the story )

Ironically, one of the things that's so wonderful about this story is how very prosaic everything is. There's very little in the way of heroic glamour for Order members (and none at all for the beleaguered teachers at Hogwarts). And where the Death Eaters are concerned, well, it's really more of the same: a passel of unappreciated minions, virtually indistinguishable from low-level employees everywhere in the Muggle world as they whinge about the 'inner circle' over a pint or three.

And Snape? He's about as close in this story to being "just a guy" as he ever could be, unhappy in his work and all but resigned to the idea that he's not the kind of man who's ever going to be lucky enough to find a girlfriend - particularly not one as well suited to him as the eminently practical Hermione Granger.

Read "Big Name Death Eater" (...and then read the sequels, "Big Name Death Eater 2" and "Big Name Death Eater 3")

02:42 pm Circle Dance by Chris (Adult)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Duncan/Methos
Length: ~18,700 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website:  Chris's Fiction on the Taterville Listings
Why this must be read:
Circle Dance is a wonderful story, set in the future where an irritatingly charm filled Duncan, under a pseudonym, decided to win over Methos, who is also under a pseudonym of course.  Its long and satisfying with Duncan and his large presence, with some help from the neighbor's cat, slowly insinuating  his way into the new life Methos has set for himself- with the old man protesting every step of the way as usual.  Methinks the man doth protest too much.

"What the hell are you doing?" Aidan demanded, hands on hips.

"Smartening up our frontage," Scott said brightly, brandishing the hedge-clippers. "I noticed it was looking a bit scruffy. Can't have that, can we?"

Briefly Aidan wondered how long it would take to remove Scott's head with those clippers. "There was nothing wrong with the hedge," he snapped. "You do realise you're damaging Omega's property, don't you? They could evict you for this," he added, relishing the thought.

"Oh, come off it," Scott said, grinning infuriatingly. "You own Omega, for God's sake, and years ago you said to me 'Mi casa es tu casa.' Remember?"

"That was then and in a different country. This is now."

"Blah," Scott said, his grin becoming what Aidan could only describe as affectionate, "blah, blah, blah. I'm about to fix myself some lunch. Care to join me? Spanish omelette and salad?"

"Do you really think I can be bribed?" Aidan sneered, ignoring the interested rumble from his stomach.

"By food? Every time. I've got some bottles of Newcastle Brown and Theakstons Old Peculiar chilling."

"Bugger off, Scott!"

"Okay. Come round in half an hour. See you."

09:42 pm Probationary Member by Adrian Tullberg (T)
Fandom: JUSTICE LEAGUE ANIMATED
Pairing/Characters: All the Justice League, with a focus on an OC, but no pairings
Length: One-Shot
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: ff.net account

Author Summary: Batman brings a new recruit into the JLA ... but there's something he doesn't know ...

Why this must be read: Okay, I know, I'm reccing an OC!fic. But there's a reason for that, because the OC? She's hella awesome in that not-a-Mary-Sue kind of way. That's right people, an OC who doesn't outshine the other heroes, who isn't well liked by all, and who doesn't even have one hero fall madly in love with her. And all the other characters are amazingly IC too!

Her name is Kelly Bryson, and she's a complete surprise to the League, but in a way that's completely different from anything you may have seen before. I can't tell you why because that'd ruin the fun, but suffice to say that Tullberg kicks things out to where most people wouldn't think of going.

The fic's a treasure that you shouldn't miss. (Go read it if only for the surprise twist!)

Go read it.

10:47 pm A TICKET AT CENTER COURT by Tongari [G]
Fandom: Prince of Tennis
Title: A TICKET AT CENTER COURT
Characters: Yanagi Renji + Kirihara Akaya [Rikkai]
Rating: Gen
Author on LJ: l'etranger [livejournal.com profile] tongari
Author Website: Apple Army.

Why this story must be read:

Tongari paints a subtle story of how, years after their moments of glory, the Rikkai team has splintered, only to be reunited in the gentlest possible manner by the one team-mate who translated his passion for tennis into a professional career. Written in Yanagi Renji's detached voice, the story manages to convey a warmth at odds with that detachment, and brings to mind old friends and the pleasure of reuniting with them.
