Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Snape/McGonagall
Length: 6700 words

Author Website: Fic Masterlist
Why this must be read: Scene after scene from past and present build up a portrait of two people who are cautious friends, long-time colleagues, sometime rivals, comrades-in-arms... and lovers. This is a Minerva and Severus who know each other in a way that defies easy categorization, but which is the only kind of knowing able to provide some semblance of comfort in a world of fear and dust.

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing/Characters: Ace/various female OCs/canon characters; Seven

Author Website: profile on Teaspoon
Length: ~3,100 words

Why this must be read: Ace is coming to terms with things that are hard to discuss; she has the Doctor to talk to, but sometimes, that's not so easy. Beautifully written, with lovely beat lines and wonderful use of repetition, this is a thoughtful and fascinating piece. There are some great bits of world-building, giving Ace new companions to explore herself with, new situations and adventures in which to learn more about herself and about the Doctor too, and all of the observations are clear and sharp. The mix of plot and introspection is perfectly handled, and the ending made me smile and smile.

08:41 pm Extra Innings by onpaperfirst (PG)
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Length: One-shot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] onpaperfirst
Author Website: See journal
Why this must be read: I was going to try and break from the MSR for my next rec, but that will have to wait. Onpaperfirst has written a gorgeous vignette that I must share with you!!

I waited a couple of days so this wouldn't be an insta-rec, but in all honestly I was ready to shout it out the second I finished reading it. I've read a lot of post-ep stories for "The Unnatural," many of which are wonderful stories. But onpaperfirst's vignette strikes a different note, capturing not only the nuances of the Mulder/Scully season 6 dynamic (which was complicated to say the least!), but also manages to bring in a touch of what we saw of their more mature relationship in the recent film. The language evokes October and the smell of a baseball park in the twilight - which is probably what sells me on the story above older stories written back in the day.

This is a warm, comfortable moment in the characters' lives - much like the episode itself. If you're like me, holding on to the final days of summer and preparing to lament the end of another baseball season, or even if you just like a little fall romance and need a pick-me-up, this is your story.
