Title: Anarchists InvadedFandom: Stargate: SG1 Pairing: Gen Author on LJ: voleuseAuthor Website: moodficWhy this must be read:It's Vala and Sam. Vala and Sam friendship. Moreover, it's Vala adjusting to the SGC and the SGC learning to adjust to Vala and, maybe, just maybe, Sam remembering what it's like to have a good friend about the place. At least, a good friend that isn't one of the boys. Voleuse, as a rule, writes gorgeous stories. Her use of imagery, words, just the way she tackles her characters. Anything she writes is definitely worth the read, but this one is a prime example as to why. Anarchists Invaded

Fandom: SUPERNATURAL Pairing: none (gen) Length: 1900 words Author on LJ: krisomniacAuthor Website: her fic masterlistWhy this must be read:I love Ellen. I miss Ellen. And this is a lovely glimpse into her mind and heart at the beginning of S2, a simple but profound sketch of her own history and her history with the Winchesters. A bit AU now, I think, in the details, but emotionally spot-on anyway. ( An excerpt: )Find the story here: Wind, Promises, Beer, and Dust

Fandom: PRIDE AND PREJUDICE Pairing: OMC/OFC, Jane Bennet/Charles Bingley, Elizabeth Bennet/Fitzwilliam Darcy Length: 55,000 words Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: The Derbyshire Writers' GuildWhy this must be read:This story is a bit different from the usual Austen fic. The point-of-view character is one John Barrow, alias John Blevins. The illegitimate son of a duke, Barrow meets Charles Bingley and Fitzwilliam Darcy at Eton, and the three become friends. Because Barrow is not of the same class as Darcy and Bingley--his father never acknowledged him--he has to find a trade to support himself. He eventually becomes a solver of problems and a fixer of sorts for the very wealthy. Living and working in the shadows, Barrow keeps track of his old friends, but rarely actually sees them. Unbeknowst to them, he assists in unseen ways as the two men attempt to woo and win the eldest two Bennet sisters. Some might say that Barrow borders on a Gary Stu, but I disagree. Barrow is a well-rounded character, whose shortcomings are clear. It is fun to read his exploits and how he flits in and out of the story of Pride and Prejudice without being noticed by the principal characters thereof. The author, Michele V., invented Barrow and introduced him in this story, but he proved so popular that a few other authors at The Derbyshire Writers' Guild used him in their stories. If you wish to read more of the elusive Mr. Barrow, you can read Resurrecting Mary by Kathlyn, A Time To Every Purpose by Stephanie R., The Murderer's Bible, also by Kathlyn, and the unfinished sequel to "Favors Returned," By Trial and Error. Please keep in mind that the latter three are incomplete and unlikely to be finished. Do not fear, however; "Favors Returned" is complete in and of itself. Overall, the author tells a good tale in "Favors Returned." Her original characters are well-depicted and are nearly as interesting as the ones with whom we are familiar. The story is engrossing, the dialogue is well done, and at the end, the reader is almost sad that it is over. This is an excellent fic. Highly recommended. * * * ( Excerpt )Favors Returned

Fandom: DC Comics Character: Owen Mercer Length: ~1500 Words Author on LJ: derryderrydownAuthor Website: ??? Why this must be read:Because even if you don't have massive raging woobie love for Owen Mercer like I do, it's an awesome character study of what drives him, presented as a series of snapshots, and is so deft and so tender at the end, that you'll wish that it were canon. Fandom: PET SHOP OF HORRORS Pairing: Leon/D Length: chaptered Author on LJ: somniesperus Author Website: http://telanu.thirteenblackbirds.net/Why this must be read: I had trouble deciding whether to put this one or my next rec as my final, because I adore them both and the manga I loved because of its awesome, and these stories made me love the fandom. This one is less serious. It still has moments of pain and hurt but it is more, say, magical. I want this to happen. Please read this, because I promise once you do you'll be rereading it all the time, as I do. "For example: I am a man," D continued, still all fake-sweet. "Now, Mr. Detective must not feel bad for missing this little detail, because his razor-sharp mind must be terribly busy concentrating on other, more important things. Like china patterns, or engraved invitations."
God, he could be the biggest bitch Leon had ever met. "I know you're a guy," Leon said through his teeth. "Anyway, that doesn't matter anymore. It's legal now. Don't you read?"Sadie, Sadie

Fandom: STAR WARS Pairing: none Length: 3,972 words over two chapters Author on LJ: rabidfangurlAuthor Website: n/a Why this must be read:Not to generalize, but there’s often a good reason for songfic’s questionable reputation. As the author herself points out, a number of them seem to be ‘the province of teeny-boppers with few brains and large obsessions with boy-bands’. So you can imagine my relief at discovering this gem, a songfic that deals so touchingly with the different perceptions one can have – about others and about oneself. This is probably more of a character study than a straightforward story, but there’s a strong narrative thread running throughout, even with the alternating focus on different time periods and different people. In the end it all goes back to Anakin, the man he was and the man (because he’s still a human being, after all) that he becomes – not just from his own perspective and experiences but those of Obi-Wan, Padmé, and his children as well.
