12:35 am She Bop by Elly (NC-17)
Hello, everyone. I'm [livejournal.com profile] rjchasez, sometimes better known as Becca, and I will be driving your crack van for Smallville this month. I'm a little late getting the party started because of a lack of internet access, but I'm here now and it's all good. I'm a huge Chloe fan at heart, and am very much a Chlark shipper, so probably a majority of the fics I rec will be of that nature. I'm also a diehard supporter of the Chlois theory, just as a warning, so you may see a fic or two of that nature here. And now... let the reccing par-tay begin!

Fandom: SMALLVILLE
Pairing: Chloe/Clark; some mentions of Chloe/Jimmy and Clark/Lana
Length: novella length
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ellyfanfiction
Author Website: Elly's Fanfiction
Why this must be read:
While this is not the first of Elly's stories I read, it's the first I remember vividly. It's one amazing piece of smut, which, of course, ends up having an edge of romance, and a sweet reminder of the last kiss we saw between the pair. And what makes the smut and romance so amazing? Elly is such an amazing writer, from the way she executes things, to the very dialogue between the characters. Perhaps I'm not wording it right, but honestly, I don't think there are words to describe how wonderful she is at what she does. This fic ended up having a lasting effect on me. Two years later, and I still vividly remember quite a bit of the fic without even looking at it. Not only that, it changed me, as a writer. It inspired me to keep trying and get better, and though I never think I'll be on Elly's level, I'd like to think she helped boost me up a bit.

And now... an excerpt.

06:17 pm Looping by Mikes Grrl (brown cortina - Adult)
Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Sam/Gene (sort of, but there definitely is sex by people with those names)
Length: 9,500 words
Author on LJ: mikes_grrl
Author Website: Mikey at the Collators' Den
Why this must be read: Mikey is one of my most favorite authors in this, or any other, fandom. I had several other of her stories on my list originally to rec here, however, once I decided I was doing a theme this month of mad!Sam and the TCG, this was kind of the obvious choice.
Even in a fandom where madness is a canon possibility, Sam and his world rarely get more insane than this. In fact, have your own sanity firmly in place before reading, because the universal response to this story is "Ow, my head hurts. Do it again!". And if you haven't had enough of the mind-f*ck when you are done with this one, there are sequels.

09:11 pm The Tiend By silverkit (PG-13)
Fandom: SUPERNATURAL
Pairing: None, gen
Length: Fairly long, split into four parts
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] silverkit
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] silverkit_fic
Why this must be read:

I loved the fairy tale aspect of this, the use of mythology and the writing is absolutely gorgeous.

Excerpt: When Sam was four, the Winchesters stayed with a nun for a week and three days. Her name was Sister Cecile and she was a friend of Pastor Jim’s. Sam doesn’t remember much about her, just that she smelled like cherries and had a deep baritone voice that was perfect for telling stories, something she did often. He developed a crush on her, the way small boys develop crushes on pretty teachers or the mothers of friends, and it made John smile thinly and Dean tease him mercilessly.

10:41 pm "The Adventure of the Buttoned Glove" by Penumbra (PG-13)

Fandom: SHERLOCK HOLMES
Pairing: Holmes/Watson
Length: 20,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] pen_and_umbra

Author Website: http://www.livejournal.com/users/pen_and_umbra/28171.html

Why this must be read:

Penumbra captures the tone of the Sherlock Holmes stories very well. In this tale, Sherlock is investigating a young man's disappearance, ably assisted by Dr. Watson. The plot is well constructed and the story does not telegraph its ending.

Of course, we are not at all surprised when the investigation takes Holmes and Watson to a discreet club frequented by men looking for other men's company - after all, we've known from the beginning that Watson has some feelings for his companion, even though he doesn't understand what they mean. But in this well-crafted story the development of the two men's relationship does not overshadow the plot but rather complements it.

Most of the story parodies Doyle's style very well, as this example shows.

But once in awhile, Penumbra crosses into pastiche, with humorous effect:

From his pocket, the inspector presented a woman's glove to Holmes, who ardently seized it. As Lestrade and I watched, Holmes proceeded to fondle, tweak, tug, crumple, and measure the glove with his oftentimes-vexing yet characteristic attention to details quite unfathomable to either my eye or brain. Completing his scrutiny by sniffing the glove and inspecting it against the light of the fire, Holmes returned it to Lestrade with an imperious flourish.

My only complaint would be that the story loses track of the case. Once Holmes and Watson recognize their mutual attraction the investigation of  Lord Eddington's disappearance gets ignored for quite a while as the narrative shifts gears. It is only at the end of the tale that we return to the investigation, which gets wrapped up hurriedly.

11:37 pm The Butterfly Effect by Cousinjean (R)
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Pairing: Buffy/Spike
Length: 52,850 words
Author on LJ: --
Author Website: --
Why this must be read: Five months after the events of "Chosen," a still grieving Buffy must follow a time-travelling demon back to 1997 (circa Season 2) Sunnydale to prevent him from destroying the timeline - and try not to destroy it herself in the process. She takes a memory-viping potion to eraze the memories of the person she selects to help her. She only has one dose so she has to select the most trustworthy person. She plans to turn to Giles, but circumstances force her to confide in Spike - unsouled, unchipped and thoroughly evil. The Spike who hates her. And, as they work together and he starts to appreciate her, she remembers that she will have to eraze his memories of everything that happens between them...
There is a lot of good plotty fics that focus on intrigue, twists and turns and don't pay much attention to characters' journeys. There are many great character studies that concentrate on heroes' inner turmoil and hard choices. But "The Butterfly Effect" is a rare gem that skillfully combines breathtaking adventure story and powerful hero journeys of both Buffy and Spike. The style is lean, spare, graphic during action and interaction episodes, poignantly introspective during intimate scenes. And the story is ingeniously written into TV canon (although it's not comics-compliant).
