Fandom: SMALLVILLE Pairing: Chloe/Clark; mentions of Lex/Lana and Clark/Lana Length: a long one-shot Author on LJ: laurelnolaAuthor Website: n/a Why this must be read: laurelnola wrote this beautiful piece just after the season 7 finale, when a lot of us were feeling down about how everything was going. For a lot of us, seasons 6 and 7 were like something of a nightmare, that didn't in any way make sense, and didn't completely line up with what we'd seen in the previous five seasons. She recognized a lot of these little things that a good portion of the fandom were upset about. She took one element, and the episode before everything went "wrong", so to speak, and corrected the things we were uncomfortable with, as well as quite a few conflicting continuity errors. What's she created is an amazing piece, that not only makes sense, but takes us back to a time when things on this roller coaster of a show were beyond logical and wonderful, and a good majority of the fandom were actually pleased and happy. It's fic like this that gives me a little bit of hope that the show itself will get better before it reaches its conclusion. ( And now, an excerpt. )Dream On

Title: Contredanse Pairing: Zoe, Aeryn, post-StM crew (gen) Length: c 5600 Author on LJ: cofax7Author Website: alchemy, mouldiwarps, and coprophagyWhy this must be read:This was written for the 2006 Thelma and Louise GalPal Ficathon. It's a lovely outsider take on the crew, with reticence and discretion on all sides, as secrets are edged around, and a working relationship nonetheless formed. Quick and sure characterisation - and also a caperfic, complete with explosions and one of Mal's plans going inevitably wrong : there is no bad here at all. ( an excerpt )Contredanse

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS Pairing: gen Length: just under 1000 words Author on LJ: lozenger8 Author Website: Loz at the Collators' Den Why this must be read: Getting back to my mad Sam theme, this is a wonderfully dark little rift on the implications of Sam waking up in the last episode, if 1973 really was all in Sam's head. It gives us reasonable, if disturbing, explanations for his actions, and a Gene that is just to strong not to exist. Looking Through You

Fandom: How I Met Your Mother/Buffy the Vampire Slayer Pairing: a little Giles/Robin UST Length: 1600 words Author on LJ: ijemanjaAuthor's Website: umm... here's the list of all her stories on Yuletide, does that count? Why this must be read: With Alyson Hannigan on How I Met Your Mother, one has to assume that the odd Buffy crossover was inevitable. But what wasn't inevitable was that any of them would be as well done as this one is. Not only is every single character voice--from both universes--spot on, but it flawlessly combines the very funny but very different senses of humor possessed by both shows. Fandom: DC COMICS Pairing: Guy Gardner (Green Lantern) Length: 1500 words Author on LJ: duskdog717Author Website: N/A Why this must be read:As a summary of why Guy Gardner is a great and awesome and complex character, there's little better than this story. This is the story of Guy and his rather-worse-for-the-wear cat Stupidcat over the course of the last decade or so of Guy's history. As a story, its charms are much like Guy's himself: it's funny as hell and rather broadly slapstick, and then suddenly your lower lip is wibbling a bit and you're not sure if you're going to laugh or cry, but the laughing does win out. He tries not to get too attached, but it's hopeless -- Stupidcat had his heart from the words "brain damage". It isn't so much that he has a fondness for damaged things, it's just that he can't help but feel a special kinship with something that no one wants because it's loud and violent and quite possibly insane.I love stories that make me like characters I've never really noticed or liked before, and this story is one of the best at that I've ever seen.
