Why this must be read:

First and for all for its style; it's like one of those fairy tales your parents read to you when you were tugged into bed. It's absolutely beautiful, like a poem. Only slightly longer ::smiles::

04:32 pm A Singular Proposition by Tanya (R)
Fandom: JANE AUSTEN (PRIDE AND PREJUDICE)
Pairing: Elizabeth Bennet/Fitzwilliam Darcy
Length: 189,200 words
Author on LJ: not to my knowledge.
Author Website: Tanya's fic at Mrs. Darcy.
Why this must be read:

This rec and the next couple are not personal favourites per se, but they are very well written examples of the typical crack of this fandom: Brotë-resque plots. The first example for today, kids, will be Elizabeth as a governess companion.

If you're a stickler for canon-ness (is that a word?) this probably isn't the fic for you, but if you can let that go, I can promise you will enjoy it. It is great fun while being at the same time a very strong reflection in the disparity of the gentlewomen's powerlessness when (almost) stripped of their social class.

I was deeply impressed the first time I read Emma at Jane Fairfax's comment about the governess' work: "(...) offices for the sale, not quite of human flesh, but of human intellect." That, if nothing else, relates Jane Austen with the Brontës, and puts this story in a good context.

10:21 pm Stinging Velvet by sionnain (R)
Fandom: MARVEL COMICS
Pairing: Jean Grey/Scott Summers/Emma Frost
Length: approx. 3000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sionnain
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] sionnain_fics
Why this must be read:

For Valentine's weekend, sort-of love stories. Due to their crazy tangled background in canon, most Jean/Emma/Scott fics are less like threesomes and more like intense love triangles, non-equilateral triangles with each corner battling hard for supremacy. In this story, the three lovers actually reach a mutually agreeable arrangement. Great characterization, Emma's sharp edges, Jean's edges (better hidden), Scott planning and taking charge, and the weight of all their histories. The author effortlessly manages to make this seem like the only logical outcome.

"That's not fair. I didn't do anything, never betrayed you." Her voice catches, and she looks away. Something is there that isn't quite the truth, but she won't share. That she has the luxury of hiding things bothers Scott, though he knows that is unfair. "Scott. I think--I think I have an idea."

When she starts talking, he wants to laugh. It's the most absurd thing he's ever heard. It'll never work.
