02:01 am Chien: gradual progress, growth by zooey_glass04 (G)
Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: Zoe-centered gen
Length: 1502 words

Author Website: just her LJ
Why this must be read: I have mad love for Zoe, and strong character studies of her delight me. This story is certainly that---but also more. The main view of Zoe is wonderful, but there's wealth of lovely character insights about all the rest of the crew peeking in around the periphery of this, too. Of these, the excellent portrayal of Simon is particularly noteworthy. On top of that, the thoughtful exploration of the meaning of family is a rich, profound, and satisfying grace note.

01:19 pm Life on Mars – Cat Style by Sarah Hartwell (PG-13)
Hi, it's Andy again, back to pimp more Life on Mars fic for you all! Last time, as it was a 'small fandom', I attempted to give an overview of the entire fandom. This time, I'm going to concentrate on those that are, in one way or another, special. Whether it's rare pairings, unique points of view or just very, very strange, it's here.

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Gen
Length: ~9,000 words
Author on LJ: not known.
Author Website: Moggy Cat
Why this must be read:

So, all that said, here's my first recommendation. And this is definitely one of the more unique takes on the fandom. Here Sarah takes the premise and weaves into it her love of cats. It's incredibly endearing, funny and moving.

07:38 pm Friends Forever by Imaginaryalice (PG-13)
Fandom: MARVEL COMICS
Pairing: Jean Grey, gen
Length: ~1,400 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] imaginaryalice
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] aliceonpaper
Why this must be read:

My next set of recs is going to focus on a corner of X-Men fandom which has grown a lot over the past few years, the X-Men:First Class series. This comic follows the ongoing adventures of the earliest group of students to bear the title 'X-Men'. Or more accurately, 'focused,' since the final issue was published today. However the series will be continued with a revised cast in Uncanny X-Men: First Class. While the title, like the First Class, couldn't last forever, it has provided impetus to a community of fans to write about and discuss the early days of those characters. A lot of these stories can be seen at [livejournal.com profile] xmenfirstclass, and a lot of them focus on the first female X-Man, Jean Grey.

I'm going to have several Jean-centric recs, and it makes sense to begin at the beginning. Jean's oft-told origin story involves a tragedy befalling a childhood friend, Annie. In Friends Forever, [livejournal.com profile] imaginaryalice explores the friendship between Jean and Annie, in a way that is funny and poignant. These kids act and like real kids, with their quarrels and dramatic expressions of affection. It's heartbreaking and perfect.

Excerpt:

"Hi," she said again. "I'm Jean. I live across the street. Sort of. Over there." She pointed to her house, a small Tudor three houses down on the opposite side of the street. The girl stared at Jean, unblinking. "I'm really happy you moved in. I can show you around." The girl continued to stare. Jean was beginning to feel foolish, but she was determined and plowed through. "The old lady who used to live here died." There. That got a reaction. The girl's eyes traveled up and down Jean. At eight years old Jean was tall for her age and skinny as a rail. She wore her long rusty red hair in two ponytails.

"The Power Puff Girls are a rip off of Sailor Moon." The girl nodded at Jean's t-shirt featuring Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup and the words GIRL POWER in pink.

Why this must be read: This one is hilarious. And kinky. And hilarious. And hot. But mostly, hilarious.
Seriously, you'll be grinning the whole time, is such an amazing story. The idea is gold, and the execution, perfect. esjay call it: A comedy of errors, bruises and 'accidental' death, and this is an accurate description.
But don't take my word on this, here, take a look: )

So, are you convinced, now? Go to Straight and Low and have a good laugh :)
