05:46 pm The Value of Life by Tarlan (G)

High time to continue these recs! I've already recced stories based on Michael Biehn's characters from The Terminator and Aliens, so I thought the next should be about Lt. Hiram Coffey from the movie The Abyss, the third movie Michael made with James Cameron at the wheel.

Fandom: MICHAEL BIEHN CHARACTERS - Lt. Hiram Coffey from The Abyss
Pairing: none
Length: not very long
Author on LJ: [info]tarlanx

Author's website: the wonderful Phoenix Michael Biehn Archive and others, found through her Fiction archive
Warning: Coffey's thoughts about Lindsey Brigman aren't exactly flattering.

Why this must be read:
The movie The Abyss stops rather abruptly - an ending many hold against it. But in Tarlan's story, that ending suddenly turns interesting when she explores what might have happened after. She does that exploring through the POV of... Lt. Hiram Coffey. How is that possible, you might ask, because didn't he die? Actually, reading her story it suddenly isn't farfetched at all that he might still be around.

Her story isn't like the movie, all action, but very introspective and facing questions like 'is it ever right to kill?' This all through the thoughts of a man trying to come to grips with a psychosis and what that madness made him do.

06:51 pm The Mistletoe Affair by Uncle Charlie (PG)
Fandom: THE MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: none (gen, Napoleon-Illya friendship)
Length: ~26,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] spikesgirl58
Author Website: on fanfiction.net
Why this must be read: Since we almost never get the boys off-duty on the show itself, it's always interesting when fic explores what the rest of their lives might be like. In this story, Napoleon brings Illya home for the holidays, to his family's farm in Vermont. Naturally trouble is waiting for them, but there's also a lot of quieter, sweet and silly moments. The family dynamics are fun, the banter is funny, and while this isn't slash, the guys' friendship is strong (as is the subtext!) - especially in how Napoleon's family views Illya, and his relationship with their son. Best of all, there are several sequel stories further exploring all these elements, both fluff and angstier drama.

10:35 pm Thanatos by Suzycat (NC-17)
Fandom: SMALLVILLE
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Length: drabble, one-shot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] suzycat
Author Website: -
Why this must be read:
Now to something completely different, well, its still a futurefic with clex, but not one of that makes-me-feel good kind. This is not some happily ever after, but rather...... A disturbing look into what or how Clark could turned out, if he tries to save the entire world, and is facing with the reality, that its impossible to save everyone. Unrealistic. Failures, combined with his guilt, and with Lex? descent into madness, hot, but fucked up. Literally.
