Fandom: MERLIN
Pairing: Arthur/Merlin
Length: 37K
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] shinetheway
Author Website: Her master fic list is here.
Why this must be read:

Series 2 of Merlin premieres today (\o/) and I've been saving this wonderful rec in celebration.

[livejournal.com profile] boxofmagic, Merlin fandom's Big Bang challenge, yielded some great long stories, but In Time Of Trial is my absolute favorite.

There are so many things to love about this story. The richest of the historical detail, the gripping political intrigue, the epic sweep of the plot, and last but not least, the incredible lengths Merlin will go to for Arthur, and vice versa.

In Time Of Trial does a brilliant job of showing Arthur and Merlin the way I like them best- together, kicking ass, taking names, and forging a new Camelot from the smoldering ashes of the old. I kind of want to punch the air just talking about how amazing this story is.

But instead, an excerpt: 'Magic?' Gawain said, disbelievingly. 'But--Arthur hates magic.' )

09:43 am The Courtship of Napoleon Solo by Utopian Trunks (G)
Fandom: THE MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: Napoleon/Illya
Length: 11 pages
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] utopiantrunks
Author Website: East of Sanity
Why this must be read: If my last rec was on the dark side for you, then this one will more than make up for it in cheer (and bright colors!) It's a fan-comic, with the story told entirely in pictures, and it's impossible to say what is more adorable, [livejournal.com profile] utopiantrunks's deft, expressive art, or tiny!cartoon!Illya's sincere quest to win his oblivious partner's heart.

12:11 pm All These Places I Have Gone by odi_amo (PG-13)

Fandom: MARVEL COMICS - Iron Man movieverse
Pairing: sort of Tony/Pepper
Length: 4,000
Author on LJ: [profile] odi_amo
Why this must be read:

An achingly gorgeous look at Tony and Pepper's relationship. The inevitability of things. The inability to breach some of the gaps that divide us and the way we keep trying, anyway. In my mind, this is what happens, yes, eventually.

Pepper knows Tony is in Cuba, because he’s puffing on a big fat cigar and the text that accompanies the picture says extremely legal. What’s not extremely legal is the Molotov cocktail he’s holding in his hand, and the shit-eating grin around the cigar clamped in his teeth. To his left is the ocean, its beach littered with trash, and to his right is a steel fence with barbed wire at the top. He’s flanked on either side by a bunch of maniacally grinning teenagers, and Pepper prepares herself for the inevitable message from SHIELD that Tony has managed to get himself arrested and executed.

Instead, he shows up two days later, and the first thing he says when the helmet comes off is, “I bet you thought I was serious.”

02:33 pm Angel of the Soul by Trisha (R)

Fandom: MICHAEL BIEHN CHARACTERS - Johnny Ringo from Tombstone
Pairing: Johnny Ringo/ OFC
Length: about 15.500 words
Author on LJ: no idea
Author's website: Thrisha's stories can be found on the Phoenix Michael Biehn Archive
Warning: spoilers for the movie Tombstone

Why this must be read:
I don't usually go for stories like this, where the canon character gets hooked up with a OFC. But here I was captivated by the vast difference between the volatile and dangerous gunslinger and the woman by his side. I also love that it's sort of a 'behind the scenes'  kind of story for the movie, with most of it taking place at the timeframe of the movie itself without changing it. Except in the end, where the story briefly mentions the more historically accurate happenings. And there is the flashback of how these two met.

But most of all I love how Johnny Ringo is still the Johnny Ringo of the movie and isn't turned into someone else or 'niced up'. He's still that mean and clearly  a bit unhinged character that made such an impression in Michael Biehn's performance of him. A very complicated man, and only more so when reading this story.

03:00 pm Letting Go (NC-17) by tainted_velvet
Fandom: POPSLASH
Pairing: Brian/Nick, Howie/Nick
Length: multipart
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tainted_velvet
Author Website: Touched by a Boy(fic journal)
Why this must be read: Firstly I should warn that this story is unfinished, but that should not in the least prevent you from reading it! I would recommend everything [livejournal.com profile] tainted_velvet has written actually. I guess this could also be called one of those stories where "not much happens," but it totally makes up for the lack of plot in gorgeous characterizations and group interaction. Brian sees something that makes him remember his past relationship with Nick. And I apologize for this rec's incoherent-ness, as my brain is muddled with fever, but have an excerpt! And then go read!

...Brian remembered a lot from back then. He remembered two young boys searching for comfort, acceptance and even...love, in each other's arms - as they passed through foreign towns with strange names. He remembered soft skin, firm touches and whispered pleas, and wanting things that he shouldn't have, because he wasn't raised to want those kinds of things....

06:58 pm Distance in the Afterlife by sevenfists (R)
Fandom: BANDOM
Pairing: Gerard/Frank, background Mikey/Alicia, past Gerard/OMC
Length: 15,450 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sevenfists
Author Website: Master fic list
Why this must be read:

Gerard comes out during Project Revolution.

I really like Gerard in this story, he's nervy and touchy and scared, happy and stupid and a big drama queen, he feels very 'real'. The slow revealing of what lead him to come out is very nicely handled and I like how the coming-out and the touring and the 'stagegay' are woven together. The story also has great dialogue and wonderful band interactions. An all-round fabulous story.
