09:09 am Miserably Afraid Of The Light by Voorishsign (G)
Fandom: SHAKESPEARE -- MACBETH
Pairing: Macbeth/Banquo
Length: 700 words

Why this must be read: The Scottish Play is a strange one, no doubt about that, and one of its strangest characters is the title character. Himself appears to be a basically good guy caught up in the throes of ambition -- and it isn't even clear that the ambition is necessarily his. The big guilt scenes in the play belong to Herself, of course, but Himself had to have been having his own private torment, too. Voorishsign gives us just a little snippet of how dreadful that guilt could be. It's vaguely Dickensian, certainly disturbing, and a fine read.

Why this must be read:

I know that they're not everyone's cup of tea, but I adore crossovers. I had trouble settling on just one to rec, so I decided not to settle. So this week you'll get two crossovers recs, instead of one.

This is a gen fic, but it doesn't skimp on emotional connections between the characters. Taking place after an AU version of BtVS Season 5, Magical Cage brings Xander, Willow, and Spike together with SG-1 and follows as they join forces to fight the baddies and get home. Outsider POV can be fascinating when it's done well, and Jack's perspective on the Scoobies is great both for what it reveals about them and what it reveals about him.

Why this must be read:

I love this fic because it's beautiful and lyrical, but it also plugs a gap in my personal canon. When Jack comes back having been buried for 2,000 years, he doesn't appear much changed. But is that really true? Perhaps Jack is just a very good actor? This fic tries to address both how Jack may have survived his burial, and how Ianto copes with being forgotten. For me, at least, this has a special poignancy after CofE.

Jack smiled peremptorily to soften the blow of his refusal, but Ianto's disappointment was palpable despite the stillness of his shoulders and the unwillingness of his features to give even a fraction of an inch. Jack had lately become somewhat of a connoisseur when it came to interpreting the subtleties of Ianto's disappointment; he didn't relish the skill.

05:24 pm Hazy Shade of Winter by Paula Wilshe (PG)
Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Length: 14k
Author on LJ: None
Author Website: Paula Wilshe on the Me & Thee archive
Why this must be read:

This coming weekend the Paula Wilshe award will be presented at VegaSHcon. As per the coordinators of the award: In 2003, we introduced the Paula Wilshe Award for New Writers in SH. This award honors Paula Wilshe, who passed away on July 22, 2003 and has been greatly missed. Paula loved to encourage new writers in the fandom, so this is one small way of remembering her and celebrating our writers.

I felt, in honor of her memory and this month being the presentation of the award, that at least one Paula Wilshe story should be recommended to be read.

Today, I have chosen "Hazy Shade of Winter". It's a short story, full of emotion and feeling and a sense of place, of how these two men come to a simple, easy conclusion about their future.

Why this must be read:

Because it's a gorgeous, quiet look at Sam and Dean taking to the sea after they've saved the world from the forces of heaven and hell.

"Dude, you've been sitting there brooding like a teenage zombie for the last seventy-two hours. Armageddon's over, rejoice!" Dean glances at him sidelong. "Man, c'mon. We just KO'd the biggest jihad in the history of mankind, let loose a little. What's going on with you?" Sam shrugs and he frowns, feels the knot in his stomach tighten and he's not sure where he's going anymore, not sure what he meant to say or wants to ask or needs to hear. For the first time since he was nine and a co-pilot, Dean feels the near-irrepressible urge to unfold a map and trace sure lines with a finger, just to make certain. He waits but Sam doesn't say anything (big fucking surprise - it's been shrugs and two-word replies and vacant expressions for miles now) and so he shrugs. "I was thinking we should go somewhere to celebrate. We've earned some serious vacation days, might as well use 'em. Whaddaya think?"

Nothing. Maybe Sam didn't hear him. Maybe Sam doesn't care. Dean bites down and his teeth press at each other and yank his jaw tight. "Anywhere you want Sammy. We can go anywhere. Where do you wanna go?"

His answer is a burst of wind in his face as Sam rolls his window down further, the air currents buffering loudly in the open space. It's hot out.

"Yeah, okay. Just think about it."

Seeing Sam and Dean peaceful, whole, and happy, and literally at sea (and learning how to sail) is absolutely wonderful. (There are some annoying dialogue punctuation issues, but the story is so worth ignoring them for.)

Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: Leroy Jethro Gibbs/ Tobias Fornell
Length: 1000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nakeisha
Author Website: Partners Forever
Why this must be read: Gibbs/Fornell stories are few and far between. Hmm, perhaps that is why they are a rare pairing. And at first glance an unlikely pairing.
Not because they are such opposites, but because they are really very much alike. Gibbs and Fornell have much more in common than just the same ex-wife.
[livejournal.com profile] nakeisha has recently started writing Gibbs/Fornell stories. And grand ones they are. I particularly like this one. As in all of Nikki’s tales there is fondness and caring and friendship And as she notes, it can be read as a stand alone, but if you so wish you can read more.
And not to worry. [livejournal.com profile] nakeisha has not strayed from her OTP.
Read and see.
Enjoy!
