Fandom: Doctor Who Pairing: Nine/Rose; Nine/Jack; Ten/Rose; Ten/Jack Length: Short Fic Author on LJ: momentinsubtext (I think this is the author, not entirely certain) Author Website: Unknown Why this must be read:I think that this is a nice piece to read because, while it is not an entirely polished work, it does have some very nice character exploration and pacing. It is an entertaining look into The Doctor's character and has some nice insights into some of his thoughts and motivations. *Note: Personally, while the author rated this piece G I would actually say it is closer to PG-13 or so for some adult concepts. Fandom: SHAKESPEARE -- ROMEO AND JULIET Pairing: Mercutio/Romeo Length: 2200 words Author on LJ: sphinxvictorianAuthor Website: sphinxficWhy this must be read: In 1947, Paul Scofield played Mercutio under the direction of Peter Brook, and his performance prompted the reviewer for the Sunday Times to describe him as "a Mercutio who really has seen the fairies, and wishes, perhaps, that he had not." Then Dreams He Of Another Benefice is a story along those lines, with an extra little spine-tingling jolt of classic horror: Mercutio hasn't just seen the fairies -- he's dead and permanently under their spell. And Queen Mab, who loves him, is prepared to give him exactly what he's always wanted . . . ( Mab gave an exasperated sigh. )Then Dreams He Of Another Benefice

Fandom: THE SENTINEL Pairing: none Length: short story Author on LJ: wordwitch Author Website: LJ and at 852 Prospect Why this must be read: Because although our fandom focuses on Jim and Blair, Simon is the unsung hero that allows them to function. A new LJ popped up this year that spotlights stories that are not J/B-centric. ts_allstars is a gathering place for the other characters to strut their stuff. It’s there that I found this lovely Simon story. Would another captain have allowed our two heroes to flourish as they do in the series? I don’t think so and neither does Wordwitch. This deceptively simple story is full of humor, poignancy and warmth. We get insight into why Simon is so successful: His innate personality coupled with the ability to use the advantages he’s been given. Five Things Simon Banks Never Asked For I hope you enjoy these “Simon slices” as much as I do. Let Wordwitch know!

Fandom: HEROES Pairing: Peter/Mohinder, Peter/Nathan (referred to) Author on LJ: technosageAuthor Website: Not that I can find Why this must be read: So, I realize it's October and thus Halloween, but I have this insane soft spot in my heart for Christmas stories. This fic has a very homey feel to it with mundane chores like dishes mixed in with dinner and work dealing with the other special people. In the background, as ever, is Nathan (through Peter's comparisons, because everything will be compared to his big brother), but the fic is about Mohinder, the way Peter sees him, and how Mohinder just gets Peter in an understated way. I love how technosage makes Mohinder so sensual. That's not even the sex. There's also some fun comparisons to the Heroes crew and comic!land. fearless, effusive and full of grace

Fandom: SUPERNATURAL Pairing: Dean-centric gen with John/Mary in the background Length: 2,560 words (+ handwritten scans) Author on LJ: kimonkey7Author Website: LJ memoriesWhy this must be read:After "Bad Day at Black Rock," Sam and Dean spend some time cleaning out John's storage locker. Dean finds an old notebook that belonged to their mother, detailing the first few months of his life, and the temptation to read it is too great to resist. His knuckles catch on the corner of an old composition book tucked under a curled-toe pair of boots. He’s surprised to see their mom’s lettering again, this time his own name written in the subject line of the school notebook. With trepidation, his fingers ghost across the black-and-white marbled cover, electric sparks tapping Morse code on his palm.
A book’s much easier to open than a letter, especially a book that bears your name. There’s no unfolding, no slow reveal. A crack of the dry-paste spine will do the trick, but Dean pauses. The same as all the rest - maybe this is meaningless, useless information, too. Plaster for cracks that aren’t his to begin with, yet the allure is bright like a lightning bug on a June night; an enticing capture for a small boy’s hands. The book finds itself open on Dean’s lap, his squat falling into a sit. This story is awesome because it is utterly and completely heartbreaking (definitely have tissues handy) and also because it's multimedia fic of a sort, as we get to see the handwritten pages of Mary's notebook and read the story of Dean's first few months. The juxtaposition of Mary, bright and hopeful, with Dean, broken and weary, is wonderfully done, deserving of every, "Oh, Dean" it causes. Also, the show never gives us enough of Mary, and I love her relationships with John and Dean here. Ink on Paper Leaves a Mark by kimonkey7If you enjoy the story, please let the author know! ~*~

Fandom: THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. Pairing: Napoleon Solo/Illya Kuryakin Length: 1,045 words Author on LJ: meris_mfuAuthor Website: The always fantastic Chrome and Gunmetal Madhouse Why this must be read:Meris packs an incredible amount of description and subtext into her pieces. The atmosphere here is just so palpable, it's just amazing to behold. Just over 1000 words, but they sure pack a wallop. Glorious descriptions and the whole scene just oozes sex and, I think just something a little more sinister underlying aswell. I don't read this story enough, but I think it's something to be savoured. Enjoy. Smoke Screen
