Oh, RL, why do you have to get in the way of fandom? I'll be posting a couple catch-up recs that I really wanted to do last week. Fandom: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Pairing: Spike/Xander Length: 3,117 words Author on LJ: sublimatedangel or sinandcinnamonAuthor Website: Fic is at the sinandcinnamon journal Why this must be read:One of the things that irritates me in fic is this need so many of us have to make the characters physically perfect. In Season 6, Xander gained a little weight, and it was commented upon in the series. In fic, many authors writing during or shortly after this time period make it clear that Xander dropped the weight and buffed up, as if he has to be a trim, muscular specimen of manhood to be at all desirable. This short and sweet fic takes place during Xander's chubby phase, and Spike's attraction is far from diminished by Xander's extra padding. Fandom: SUPERNATURAL Pairing: none Length: 3,650 words Author on LJ: dsudisAuthor Website: Words Words WordsWhy this must be read:This is a remix of Warm Strangers by extraonions (which I also recommend), in which a group of people Sam and Dean have saved over the years come together in Monument, CO after news of their deaths in the explosion gets out. I love stories that show the people the Winchesters have helped standing up for them and this is a good one, achy and sweet. Warm Strangers (The Next of Kin Remix) by dsudis takes that story and tells it from Bobby's POV, so that we see Bobby get the news of the Winchester boys' deaths (and the reprieve when Dean finally calls to tell him they're still alive), and then we get to see him watch other people mourn Sam and Dean and show their appreciation for what the Winchesters have done for them. We revisit characters from the first couple of seasons of the show, and the boys get a memorial they deserve and would probably never get otherwise. Bobby runs a thumb over the surface of the photo, worn around the edges from being kept in his wallet, and then he shoulders his way quietly up to the fence. Sure enough, it's remembrances of Sam and Dean--all jumbled together, with no attempt to give each of the boys his own shrine. There's some weird stuff--that doll would have given either of the boys the creeps, but it probably means something--but there are drawings and notes and a couple of photos, too, enough to make it unmistakable.
For a half a second, the idea flits through Bobby's mind: he could stand up in front of all these people and shout out the good news, tell them Sam and Dean are safe and well away. They can stop grieving and go home. But that wouldn't serve the boys any--if there's good that comes of this, it's that everyone who might trouble them thinks they're dead--everyone human, anyway.
To say nothing of the fact that the grief is only premature, not misplaced. I'm kind of an easy mark when it comes to crying over stories (I cry at lots and lots of things), but I would definitely suggest having tissues handy for these two. Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Fraser/girl!Kowalski, Fraser/Kowalski Length: 95,000 words - novel length Author: j_s_cavalcanteAuthor Website: Her LJ (friends only, but she's willing to make friends) Why this must be read:Wow. So, the dueSouth fandom has a lot of genderswitch fic because why not? When there's voodoo and alien abductions and deaf wolves who read lips in canon, you can do crazy things in a believable way. And that's exactly what j_s_cavalcante does here. I'm not fond of stories where Ray has always been female or randomly changes for a PWP, but here Ray becomes Rae when he and his female counterpart in another dimension switch lives and Ray has to learn how to be a woman. Yes, that involves learning to move properly, dress, and deal with PMS. Fortunately, Fraser is there for him all the way. This fic is intellectually compelling, emotionally engaging, sensitive, incredibly hot (het and slash), and threads plot gracefully throughout on top of everything else. It took three years to write and is utterly worth the read. So go make yourself some coffee with Smarties and settle in... Ray was dreaming.
