Title: Leave It To Solo ... or Beaver Joins The Alliance Pairings: Ward/June, Han/Leia Length: 5722 words Author on LJ: randy_oAuthor's Website: FFN profileWhy this story must be read:Leave It To Solo hit all my happy crossover buttons: it's in character, has a wonderful plot, it's amusing and each main character has a role, large or small. It helps a lot that Leave It To Beaver's 1950's earnestness ties into the earnest atmosphere of Lucas' 1950's growing-up years and subsequent filmmaking. Yeah, that's reaching, but the upshot is, Leave It To Beaver occupies a well-known universe, even if you have seen only snippets of the program. This story is cute. Fonzie would have said so, to bring in a slightly more timely reference, although nowadays to say that the story takes place in the era of Mad Men might make more sense. Meet you at the drive-in at the end of the month! Leave It To Solo ... or Beaver Joins The Alliance

Crossover day! Wheeee! Title: A Potentially Dangerous Impression Pairing: Sam Winchester/Ryan Evans Length: Long. 35 chapters. Author on LJ: sally_simpson76Author Website: purelyficWhy this must be read: For all that the premise is slightly crack (Sam pulling a 21 Jump Street at East High), this story pulled me in. The character voices are fantastic, both for Sam and Dean and for the HSM characters, and the actual plot is not far off of what one might see in an episode of Supernatural. This is one of those crossovers that I never expected to work, but that I enjoyed immensely. Depending on your take on Sam, you might have to suspend your disbelief a smidge to see him slashed with Ryan, but the characterizations are drawn well enough that I don't think most readers will have a problem. Fandom: THE MIGHTY BOOSH/JANE EYRE Pairing: Howard Moon/Vince Noir Length: 24.5k words Warnings: Spoilers for Jane EyreAuthor on LJ: maestro1123Author Website: The Pinstriped Emos on MySpaceWhy this must be read:Chapter One: In which Miss Noiyre arrives at Thornfield, blowjobs are mentioned, and the housekeeper has a problem with unsightly facial hair.
Reader, I married him.
Oh shit, wait — that comes later. Let me start over. The opening lines make it clear that this fic is a witty, cheerfully anachronistic homage to Charlotte Brontë’s classic tale of mystery and romance. “Vince Noiyre” is a gender-bending male governess (“jobs are scarce enough for an electro-ponce-slash-classic-frontman”) who brings a lot of baggage — literal and metaphorical — to Thornfield, where he meets the brooding, riding-crop-wielding master of the house, “Howard Moonchester”; a hirsute housekeeper, Bollo; and his charge, Naboo, who is less interested in his lessons than in gaining access to whoever — or whatever — is kept locked up in the attic. maestro1123 does justice to both the plot of Jane Eyre and the personalities of the Boosh characters. Take, for example, her version of the scene where the lovelorn governess draws a self-portrait and the likeness of an apparent rival for the master’s affections. ( Ah, who am I kidding. ) Action! Horror! Passion! Adam Ant! A gorilla in a maid’s cap! You’ll find them all in... “Jane Eyre vs. The Mighty Boosh”

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (NEW)/STAR TREK (REBOOT) Pairing: Kara/Kirk, Kara/McCoy Length: Multi-Chapter, 20-30K? (wild guess) Author on LJ: ninety6tearsAuthor Website: her fic tagWhy this must be read:After Kara disappears in Maelstrom, she finds herself aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, some time after the events of the movie. This is a fabulously entertaining crossover, with great (and believable) relationships between Kara, McCoy, Kirk and Spock. I also enjoyed the way it dealt with the starkly different world-views of the Galactia and Star Trek universes. Fans of McCoy in particular will probably enjoy this. "What do you think, Mr. Spock? Can we keep her?”Rising Sign

Title: The Incident of the Fellow in the Fellows' Garden Pairing: none (gen) Length: novella length Author on LJ: azdakAuthor Website: MFU fic list on her LJWhy this must be read:I was going to ignore Crossover Day, because I don't really read crossovers--no philosophical objection, I just don't have enough fandoms to make many of them comprehensible. But then I realized that this tour de force hasn't been recced yet in either of its fandoms. You should read this even if you've never heard of Man from UNCLE or the Wimsey books, but if you know either or both fandoms, you must read it. It's a pure joy. It takes place at Cambridge University in 1955, and the two canons fit together seamlessly. There is a real plot, realistic historical background, and the character voices are absolutely, hilariously perfect. There's Lord Peter, a bit more frail with age, but mentally as sharp as ever, Bunter, who doesn't seem to have lost a step, a suspicious suicide as one of the Fellows of Christ's College shoots himself with Milton's (!) pistol, and then there is the rude and surly Russian post graduate student who comes under suspicion. Go read--and whatever you do, do not, do not miss the epilogue where Bunter and Illya tangle with a surprising result. The Man of the Match, seated to his left, observed the hilarity with an air of sullen disapproval that Peter found rather provoking. "Nice to see young people enjoying themselves, what?" he bellowed into Kuryakin's ear, over the noise of a particularly vulgar rendition of the Eton Boating Song.
"High Table certainly offers an excellent vantage point from which to observe the benefits conferred by a public school education," responded the Russian. Were it not for these outbursts, one might have thought him shy; but having been on the receiving end of rather more pieces of blistering sarcasm than was comfortable, Peter suspected it was camouflage. It seemed that, since pumping was getting him nowhere, he would have to try more direct methods. The Incident of the Fellow in the Fellows' Garden

Fandom: FIREFLY/DEAD LIKE ME Pairing: Gen Length: 2860 words Author on LJ: valiantAuthor Website: just her lj Why this must be read: It is a rare Browncoat who can watch the Big Damn Movie without making tiny meep noises of distress at one particular part---and I think you likely know which part I mean. Valiant takes that pain and transmutes it into something that retains its sadness, but still has the seeds of something new for Wash---something that is oddly not entirely unlike what he must leave behind. On top of all that, Valiant does all the voices and characterizations exquisitely, and her dialogue is wonderfully sharp. She does right by both canons, and even uses their convergence to make both even richer than they were before. ( read an excerpt )Dead Like Wash

Fandom: FIREFLY/FARSCAPE Pairing: Crais/Zoe/(Talyn) Length: 1260 words Author on LJ: ijemanjaAuthor Website: just her lj Why this must be read: This is a very spare and subtle story, as interesting for what it doesn't say as what it does. Ijemanja leaves a number of questions with only shadowy hints as to the answers; this could have felt unsatisfying, but it doesn't. Instead, it only reads as natural for Zoe, and wholly a consequence of her laconic and reserved manner. The character dynamics are excellent, and they present interesting possibilities for the future that will keep you wondering about this crossover 'verse for days after reading the story.
