12:16 am Lunch and Other Obscenities by Rheanna (PG-13)
Fandom: STAR TREK: REBOOT
Pairing: Gen with some pre-Spock/Uhura
Length: 9,786 words
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] rheanna27
Author Website: Palimpsest
Why this must be read: As much as I loved the movie, it suffered from a distinct gender imbalance and from general failing of the Bechdel test. Thankfully, fandom occasionally picks up the slack, like this lovely story centering around Uhura and Gaila in the early Academy days. One of my favourite aspects of the fic is that it doesn’t ignore Gaila’s alienness, the occasionally hilarious misunderstandings and conflicts it leads to. Spock’s role in the story is a great bonus, and doesn’t detract in the slightest from the portrayal of the female friendship. This one is bound to leave you with a smile on your face.

Why this must be read: This is a post-Shrine story. It's about the ways Rodney changes, and it's gutting and brilliant, and will make you ache with sadness.

Fandom: MERLIN BBC

This is a gorgeous story with a unique take on how the future may play out.  Wonderful characterizations and an intriguing plot make this a must read story for any Gwen/Morgana fan.

The day Morgana left, rain had fallen hard and heavy onto the roof of the castle, creating an illusion of cavernous safety within its walls. Gwen still felt the drops of water, searing her skin like acid, as Morgana had ridden with five armed escorts, a silken hood hiding her face. For a week, Arthur had found ways to be with Gwen almost every waking moment, and she had felt Merlin's magic crawling across her skin, as he kept a watchful enchantment on her. She had been a prisoner of their promise to Morgana.

She would not be a prisoner this time.

11:32 pm To Serve and Protect by ragdoll987 (PG-13)
Fandom: DC UNIVERSE: BATMAN NOLANVERSE
Pairing: Jim/Bruce
Length: ~23,000
Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Author Website: Fanfic List
Why this must be read:

In canon, Jim Gordon trusts Batman for no other reason than his own blind faith that he will be there for himself and Gotham City should the need arise. [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] uses this core relationship, along with excellent characterizations, and wonderful storytelling, to bring Batman and Gordon together in one of my favorite pieces in the fandom. This multi-chapter story (taking place after the events of The Dark Knight) deals with the after effects that the Joker's rampage left on one Jim Gordon; his marriage, his relationship with Batman, and the left-over corruption on the force who will try and kill him once and for all.
