Fandom: STARGATE: ATLANTIS/MURDER SHE WROTE Pairing: McKay/Sheppard Length: 20,000 words Author on LJ: chandriAuthor Website: Fantasi.netWhy this must be read: This sounds like the craziest, most cracked-out crossover idea ever, right? And yet, in Chandri's hands, you will quickly go from "Bwuh?" to, "Of course Jessica Fletcher is a McKay!" *snicker* Go on, I dare you. Casting On

Fandom: TORCHWOOD Pairing: Jack/Ianto Length: 52,000 words Author on LJ: bassairAuthor Website: Fanfiction tagWhy this must be read: Some days, all I really want in the world is to curl up with a superior melodrama, safe in the knowledge that there will be adventure, angst, improbable but hugely enjoyable plot twists, and most importantly, a happy ending. When it comes to this epic post-CoE fixit by Bassair, I can safely say: tick, tick, tick, and tick. Throughout Time and Space

Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Length: 2029 words Author on LJ: sc_fossilAuthor website: More of the author's works can be found here http://daveandkensdiner.fanfictiononthenet.com/viewuser.php?uid=2Why this must be read: This little fic gives us that familiar and ever-popular S&H theme, the bedside vigil. In this case, it's Starsky keeping vigil over Hutch. It's a dialogue-only fic told entirely in Starsky's voice, and LilyK has that voice down perfectly. No heavy angst, just sweetness. Fandom: Firefly Pairing: Jayne, Kaylee Length: 4,632 Author on LJ: wily_one24Why this must be read: To paraphrase the author's words, it's just fluff - pure unadulterated fluff and as such it's fun. When Kaylee gets bad news from home and Simon doesn't understand, Jayne tries to comfort her. Since his notion of comfort is to drink with her, drunken fun ensues. Kaylee and Jayne are fun drunks and Mal's reaction to Kaylee's games on the comm is perfectly Mal. If you want a bit of laugh read... Whiskey bears

I've got particular weaknesses for plotty case-fic, post-COTW fics where Ray Kowalski and Benton Fraser are living in the north and Ray is an essential part of his community, and established relationship stories. This long story from last summer's batch of Slowest Big Bang stories has all of that, and more- the case around which the story is organized is as involving and important as anything I've read in fandom. Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Ray Kowalski/Benton Fraser Length: 30,000 words Author on LJ: sagenessAuthor Website: Sage's Fictional PagesWhy this must be read: Because one of the most important ways that Due South differs from too much of pop culture is its awareness of social injustice and the responsibility of individuals to resist those injustices, and this story expresses that awareness in the form of a ripping good yarn, in the spirit of the original. Excerpt: ( Ray didn't roll his eyes, but he sat up, stretched his shoulders, and turned off the television. )Calm and the Black-Stained Sky.

Fandom: STAR TREK: REBOOT Pairing: Gen Length: one-shot Author on LJ: ethrosdemonAuthor Website: BibliotequeWhy this must be read:OCs, especially female OCs, often get a bad rap in fandom, and accusations of Mary Sueism are never far. This story, told from the pov of Enterprise ship counselor Sara Mendez, is an example of just how effective the inclusion of an OC can be when done right. Sara is a wonderfully complex character, insightful and with a biting wit, who both offers an outsider point of view on life in the ship while fitting in seamlessly with the canon characters. Her interactions with Kirk and McCoy in particular are a joy to read. ( excerpt )PTSD as a way of life

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS Pairing: Sam/Gene Length: 23,000 Author on LJ: rubberbuttonAuthor Website: List of FicWhy this must be read: This is fairly long, nicely plotted casefic. The dialogue is what really struck me about this: it’s pitch-perfect and clever, filled with wit and sarcasm. Gene’s verbal dexterity is particularly difficult to imitate, but this gets it dead right. The case itself is interesting and includes some well-rounded OCs (I’m quite fond of Max, but I admit to having a bias where Classicists are concerned). All around great fic.
