01:06 am I Dream a Nation of You by foxxcub (PG-13)
Fandom: BANDOM (Panic/TYV, with some MCR and FOB)
Pairing: Jon/Brendon, Jon/Spencer, Ryan/Brendon, pre-Panic GSF, Frank/Gerard
Length:  46,000 words
Author on LJ:  [livejournal.com profile] foxxcub
Author Website:  n/a
Why this must be read:  This is an awesome story I find myself reading over and over again.  The characters are engaging and the storyline is amazing.   It is, to quote the author, a steampunk story about dragons and the boys who ride them.
Ryan gave Brendon a long, considering look. "How much do you know about the first raids?" he asked.

Brendon flushed; the answer to that would've been very different before Jon came to Audrey. "I...know about the Alpha Minister's decree making Riders official enemies of the state because the Government thought the Dragonrider Guild was growing too powerful," he answered carefully. "And that all 'friends and harborers' were found guilty of treason." He made a face. "So yeah, I know I could be arrested for knowing about Jon and Helia, but I don't care. It's worth it." Brendon shrugged and smiled crookedly over his shoulder at Jon and Helia.

11:46 am The Men of Eureka by spikedluv (NC-17)
Fandom: EUREKA
Pairing: Jack/Stark
Length: 2,575
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] spikedluv
Why this must be read: Jack and Nathan get roped into appearing in the 'Men of Eureka' calendar. Which is a really wonderfully convenient excuse to dress the boys up in hot photo-taking costumes and then have them make with the sexy times.

And they are really, really hot sexy times too!

01:39 pm Fangirl!Frannie by Innocentsmith (PG)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairings: Frannie Vecchio/fandom. (Also Frannie Vecchio/Elaine Besbriss, and references to Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski, Ray Vecchio/Stella Kowalski, and Margaret Thatcher/Renfield Turnbull.)
Length: 1300 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] innocentsmith
Author Website: Innocentsmith at the AO3
Why this must be read: If this story doesn't fill you with glee, I really don't know what would. There is Frannie asking Elaine to beta for her, Welsh finding her printed-out fanfic at the station, Frannie having shipping wars with Turnbull, and there is Canadian Explorers RPF for Yuletide. Also, Frannie's LJ name is [livejournal.com profile] msmalaprop. &hearts (Uh, that actually goes to a real LJ, but I'm assuming that's not Frannie.)

Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
Pairing: none
Length: novella (circa 30,000)
Author on LJ: not known
Author Website: Heather F's stories on Blackraptor

Why this must be read:  Well, because it’s classic whumpage by a master of the art, who spectacularly fells two of the seven in the same tense, well-constructed story.  Most of it takes place out in the desert at night which Heather conjures really effectively.  And then, what gives it extra bite (and a goodly whiff of potential tragedy) is the dysfunctional nature of Chris's relationship with one of the suffering men.  I love his inner struggles over whether he cares as much for one of the victims as he obviously does for the other.

There are some great, almost surreal, scenes in camp, a neat little twist to the plot and Chris nearly spontaneously combusting every five minutes which is always entertaining.  Anyhow, despite a bit of a squick factor (the clue is in the title), this story has many really strong elements.  I keep coming back to it.

Should ever the choice arise, Chris would never single out one of his men, one of his family, to be a target of such violence. Larabee, if faced with such a brutal choice, would pick himself. He would not leave it to fall ... on the one who always expected it.

06:59 pm The New Frontier by Sarah T (PG)
Fandom: STARGATE: ATLANTIS
Pairing: gen
Length: 12,685 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] harriet_spy
Author Website: .sometimes you need a story.

Why this must be read:

This fic has an amazing outsider POV. Sometimes, it's easier to have an outside POV because you don't need to pay as close of attention to the characterization of a more difficult character, but the author doesn't shy away from that at all. The world this story takes place on it rich and detailed and the characters all fully conceived.

It's a fic that takes place after the war and John is wandering about by himself. John stays awhile and helps out a small settlement, only to be confronted by an enemy of his not-too-long-ago past. You only get glimpses and guesses at what happened in the final war, but this is a character study and you're left feeling alright not knowing everything that happened.

Poetic prose and with a lovely flow to it all. In the end, you're as close to the persona who is telling the story as to John. Everyone matures and changes and it's wonderful to read something that's fairly simple in plot (as in no technobabble or war strategy), but delves deep into the emotional senses.

08:24 pm "Gravity" by Turnonmyheels (Rated G)
Hi all. I'm driving the crack_van for the Fast and the Furious series this month. I was waiting to rec anything until I finished an updated fandom overview (this overview is really useful, but there's been a fourth movie since it was written), but it is taking longer than I expected. Instead, I will start reccing stories, and I'll put up the fandom overview when I get a chance.

In short, I love the Fast and the Furious series because it deals with created families, loyalty, love, friendship, and an evolving sense of self all wrapped up in shiny, fast cars and super hot characters. Good times. Mostly, I love the different ways families are created, the way they hurt each other and help each other, the way they're filled with love and hate.

A huge part of the fandom is mostly interested in boy slash, but my interests lean toward girl slash and het, so my recommendations will echo that interest. (I'm also a big fan of crossovers, so look for those on the appropriate day.)

For my first rec, a story that so very well encompasses family it fills me with emotion every time I read it.

Fandom: FAST AND THE FURIOUS SERIES
Pairing: Gen, Letty and Mia
Length: approximately 3,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] turnonmyheels
Author Website: Fic Masterlist
Why this must be read:

"Gravity" encompasses so much of what I love about The Fast and the Furious in general and Letty and Mia in particular. It's a lovely story about families, born and created, and the way your family can hurt you even while trying to take care of you, and how loss can rock a family to the core without actually destroying it.

More reasons you should read this fic. )
