12:13 am {and swallow fireflies} by paperclipbitch (PG-13)
Right! Sorry about my absence; I just started a new job and I've been a bit overwhelmed.  I'm going to post a few recs today to make up for the time lapse, so bear with me?  This first one is in honor of having finally watched the premiere of the new season of Doctor Who, and as such, CONTAINS SPOILERS.  Highlight to see invisible text.

Fandom:  DOCTOR WHO (WHONIVERSE)
Characters/Pairing:   Amy, the Doctor [a bit Amy/Eleven, a bit Amy/Rory]
Length:  9205 words
Author on LJ:  [livejournal.com profile] paperclipbitch
Author's Website:  fanfiction can be found [livejournal.com profile] paperclipbitch under fandom tags and/or masterlists
Why this must be read:  Admittedly, it's early days for Eleven and Amy Pond, but for a fic written based solely on one episode, the amount of characterization and detail is simply astounding.  I love this story SO MUCH.  Um.  Go read it.  It's also a 'ficmix', which means that it's a fanmix written into the story, so check out the fantastic music too!

Summary:  She’s not the mentally ill one here, really, and she still can’t eat custard, ten years later.

12:22 am The Sacred Art of Stealing by netgirl_y2k (G)
Fandom:  SARAH JANE ADVENTURES (WHONIVERSE)
Characters/Pairing:  Ten, Sarah Jane, Luke, Maria, Clyde
Length:  short
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] netgirl_y2k
Author's Website:  netgirl_y2k @ dreamwidth
Why this must be read:  Er.  Because this is the silly Doctor we know Ten can be, and the awesome team we know the Sarah Jane kids are.  And because it contains lines such as this one:  "Brilliant! Look at them, they're brilliant! Pre-trained humans!"

Summary: A totally serious and in no way silly ficlet in which the Doctor tries to pinch Sarah Jane's companions.

12:13 pm The Sky Was Full of Wings by De (NC-17)
Fandom: SUPERNATURAL
Pairing: Sam/Dean with Dean/OFC, Dean/OMC, and Sam/OFC/Dean
Length: 34,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] loolookitty
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] loolookitty's master fic list at her journal.

Why this must be read: De's strength as a writer — hands down — is her ability to build a new world around the canon characters that we love. Further, he OFC is complex and interesting; I found myself caring about her as much as I did Sam and Dean. "Sky" was her entry for the 2009 [livejournal.com profile] kink_bigbang and it is no exception when it comes to fast-paced adventure in a fantastic world with characters we adore. It's actually the best example of how to do this and write a story with quite a bit of porn that propels the story forward instead of filling a hole. This is an intense and emotion read that continues to push the envelope until the last word; I found myself shocked and excited with each click to a new chapter. While this fiction is sexy and hot, it's also more than that — it's about the redemption that love offers Sam and Dean when they thought it was one more dream lost to them. A beautifully crafted, engaging novella that conquers a common trope to turn it into a fresh and magical love story.

12:55 pm The Remnants of Our Shaking Ghosts by anythingbutgrey
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (NEW)
Pairing: Sam/Jean (slight Kara/Sam)
Length: oneshot
Author on LJ: [personal profile] anythingbutgreyAuthor Website: Here
Why this must be read:

This fic is a sparse but brutal look at the resistance on Caprica. The author leaves so much out, the way all uncomfortable stories are told—but you can feel the weight between every line. But despite the despair, there's a beauty in Jean's perspective and the closeness she has with Sam. It's a war-buddy bond, and something more, but that something more isn't overwhelming. This was written before "The Plan" came out, but it could fit in almost perfectly; it makes you wish we'd gotten more in-depth focus on this storyline.

02:22 pm The History of Benton Fraser: A Fur Trader; or, The Rewards of Duty, by Damned Colonial (R)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Length: 37,000 words
Author on DW: [personal profile] damned_colonial
Author Website: The author's fic on the AO3
Why this must be read: Possibly this wasn't announced on the due South noticeboard, because if I'd seen it, I would have been all over it. Or maybe I just missed it and everyone else has known about this awesome fic for a year and never told me. I stumbled on it by chance. It's a retelling of the pilot (with scenes from other episodes worked in) in a regency setting. Fraser is a Hudson's Bay Company fur trader (what else would he be?) and Ray K is a Bow Street runner (the precursor to the police in London). Fraser comes to London on the trail of the killers of his father, etc. You know it's going to be an utterly delightful story when even the disclaimer makes you squee. Warning: it's not quite finished, but don't let that stop you from reading it--the plot is resolved, it's just that some of the scenes at the end aren't fleshed out. This story got me through the flight from [livejournal.com profile] bitchinparty and almost made me forget that I was cooped up in an airplane.

08:59 pm Mr Spock's Space Menagerie (PG-13)
Fandom: STARTREK RPF
Pairing: Leonard Nimoy/William Shatner
Length: none given, ficlet-ish
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] obstinatrix [livejournal.com profile] desoto_hia873 is definitely one of the queens of the happy little corner of fandom.  My absolute favourite story of hers is f-locked (its getting published OMG!!!) so we'll go with my second favourite.

She wrote it in response to a prompt that made her think, quote "that the prompter must want a crack universe wherein Bill and Leonard take some time out, grow hippy beards and sell snakes to stoners in downtown San Francisco. That's what they got, anyway."

It's fantastic.  Quirky and funny and, yeah OK cracked out a bit, but only in the best possible ways.  After filming Star Trek ends, Leonard declares he's moving to San Fran to open a pet shop.  Bill goes with him.

Awesomeness ensues.
