12:46 pm brother, how we must atone (before we turn to stone) by Reem (PG-13)
Fandom: SUPERNATURAL
Pairing: [gen] Dean and Sam
Length: 1,800 words

Why this must be read: Reem is the writer who brought me to general fiction. I am a shipper at heart and I came into Supernatural fandom a raving, irrational shipper (will go out that way too) but she showed me in every story that I've read by her (all of them) that general fiction is not just a recapitulation of canon — it's vibrant, character-centric, beautiful, and a million times worth its weight in gold. Choosing one of her fics to rec this month was excruciating because all of them deserve to be recced, but this one-shot, a coda to "Abandon All Hope" [5.10] continues to blow me away. Here's a taste:

Reem gets inside of Sam's head especially well, but she knows Dean inside and out too. This is such a gem of a fic that I include it in my top 10 for 2009. It's a must-read that you will not regret taking a chance on.

Why this must be read:

It's a lost moment in time shared by these two women, who came from two very different places. I loved the ways that [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] highlighted these difference's; Beru's observations of Padmé's hands, and the slight discomfort they both feel in each others company were two elements that just made this story feel real to me.

07:57 pm The Fancy Dress Affair, by Utopian Trunks (R to PG-13)
Fandom: MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: Slash - Napoleon Solo/Illya Kuryakin
Length: 154 words, 15 drawings (in four sections)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] utopiantrunks
Author Website: http://www.eastofsanity.com
Why this must be read: Hot, imaginative and funny is a great combination and that's what "The Fancy Dress Affair" is. It will leave you smiling!

I had a big debate with myself whether to recommend "Nor Heed the Rumble" or "The Fancy Dress Affair", but I could not pick one over the other, so my compromise was to recommend them both. They are so different that anyone unfamiliar with the writer/illustrator wouldn't guess they are by the same person.

10:16 pm Writhing Towards and Unforeseen Divination by TLynn
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Length: 1,300 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tlynnfic
Author Website: TLynn's Fanfic
Why this must be read:

I stumbled across this fanfic page/collection when I first started reading X-Files fanfic. I immediately bookmarked it and I've revisited it often. TLynn's fic is short and sweet. She occasionally delves into the dark and heavy and when she does it is very, very, very good. This is one of those stories.

This story takes place between "This Is Not Happening" and "Dead/Alive" and is a journey into Scully's mind during this time. This is a wonderful Scully-centric story that delves deeply into the conflicting emotions that Scully faced during that time that she was pregnant and still searching for Mulder Now, a lot of fans don't like the 8th season and a lot of fans do, but even if you love or hate it you need to read this story. TLynn captures Scully's resolve, determination, and pain beautifully.

Why this must be read: Honestly, I was a little surprised to see this hadn't been recced here yet. "Undrowning" brings in the practical, real-life epitaph to "You're Welcome" - the funeral process. Angel's uncertainty and generally hazy state of mind rings true to the enormity of his loss. I love the Cordelia quotes placed haphazardly (or not) throughout his thought process. It's a lovely tribute to one of the most important characters in the series.

10:27 pm Change, See: Life is About, by Adabsolutely (NC-17)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Duncan MacLeod/Methos
Length: 6,200 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] adabsolutely
Author Website: Stories are archived at the Highlander Fiction Archive

Why this must be read: Adabasolutely uses the mundane minutiae of everyday life to paint a quietly humorous picture of two people making and remaking their lives together. She does a great job weaving their long histories into their present lives; Duncan takes up ambulance driving again, Methos translates books for a living and returns to medical school to catch up with modern medicine. Throughout the story, Duncan blows off steam by remodeling, refurbishing, and redecorating different houses they move into. The story could be called curtainfic, though given Duncan's enthusiasm with hammer and saw, it might more accurately be called cabinet-fic. ;-)

11:16 pm Packing for the Assassin on the Go, by DrawMeASheep (PG-13)
Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: Tony/Ziva
Length: 12k
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: FF.net profile
Why this must be read:

This is a series of related "missing scenes" from the recent episode 'Jet Lag,' and details Tony and Ziva's adventures in Paris. The premise is just as fun as the title suggests, and the banter is top-notch. It's a great look at how the partners might interact alone in a foreign country, and if you like missing scene fillers this one is a must!
