05:27 am Brought to the Edge and Always Crossing the Lines by edenbound (PG-13)
Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: Gen
Length: 19,024 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] edenbound
Author Website: just her lj
Why this must be read: This is a Simon-centered AU based on what might have happened if he had failed to rescue River from the Academy. Overall, this is an angsty and regret-filled story, all sharp-edged and only sometimes leavened with comfort. Also, there's a major character death. It's easy to tip over the edge from dark into maudlin, but this story never does that. For all the harshness in edenbound's vision, the angst is not fetishized or overwrought, but real and human and totally plausible. This version of Simon is more than a little heartbreaking to see, but in a way that feels honest to his character and the situation he finds himself in. The plot and detail-work are compelling, and the voices are good as well, especially for Simon and Mal.

Fandom: SLINGS & ARROWS
Pairing: None
Length: Short
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] curtana
Author Website: Her LJ
Why this must be read:
Though debatable, it can be said that Anna is one of Geoffrey's closest friends. To me, it seems like [livejournal.com profile] curtana looked at the canon and though 'well, why him and not Ellen?'

In this very IC fic, Anna gives Ellen a ride home. Once they are away from the theater, Anna's personality grows somewhat more assertive while retaining her sweetness. In contrast, Ellen's divaness gets put on ice, giving way to a particular kind of vulnerability. It's a sweet story of people reaching out and connecting.

11:48 am Close to the Vest by Zeke Black (NC-17)
Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
Pairing: Chris/Ezra
Length: 23, 317 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nellhowell
Author WebsiteZekieldom

Why this must be read: Because it’s so time for something Chris and Ezra :)  I first read and loved this author in another fandom and under a different name, and of course she has been recced here many times before and rightly so.  A phenomenally good writer with a grasp of old west detail that can hardly be bettered.  The love she portrays between Chris and Ezra is tough, real and unromantic (at least on the surface).  I much prefer it to hearts and flowers.

This is Zeke Black’s first M7 fic, and “first fics” in a fandom are often written with a kind of freedom that can make them, as in this case, classic.  It’s a rather dark and uncomfortable piece in which Ezra is in a right old mess.  The addiction, prostitution and characteristic self-loathing fuddling his mind are a harsh but very effective counterpoint to the clear-sighted devotion of the man in black.

In one of those eerie moments in which they seemed to share emotions, Chris dropped his forehead to Ezra's shoulder, and murmured, "Why, of all the people in the world I mighta come to want since losing Sarah, did it have to be you?"

Fandom: SLINGS & ARROWS
Pairing: None
Length: Flashfic
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] inlovewithnight
Author Website: Her LJ
Why this must be read:

Geoffrey, Anna and Richard have a sit down with Darren to discuss Darren's latest production for the New Burbage Festival. An argument between Darren's ideas about what art is versus Geoffrey calling him on his ridiculousness ensues.
Oh, and Geoffrey 'discovers' the internet.
Enough said.

12:33 pm A Thousand Furlongs of Sea by Scribe (G)
Fandom: SLINGS & ARROWS
Pairing: None
Length: 726 words
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: All of Scribe's fic is here at AO3
Why this must be read:

Let's see . . . because it's a Pirate AU? Yup, that's right, Scribe's taken some of the S&A characters and have made them actual pirates. Sure, it's a cracky premise (I actually did a double-take when I read the summary), but you know what? It works!

Scribe flips the S&A canon in such a clever way and using so few words that the reader can't help but ask for MOAR stories from that 'verse. Hilarious in its inherent crackiness and very much IC for everyone down to 'Oliver', this is a ficlet that deserves to be read again and again.

12:39 pm The Clue in the Mystery by LKY (PG)
So sorry that I haven't been posting more frequently! I'll try to wrap up the month with a little more pedal to the metal.

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim and Blair (this is gen, no actual pairing)
Length: 201kb
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lky
Author Website: Tales by LKY
Why this must be read:

I'm bifictional, and when I read gen stories I LOVE a strong brotherly relationship between Jim and Blair. LKY delivers among the best gen characterizations of Our Heroes in this fandom, IMHO. Her guys are both strong -- no wimpy Blair here, even though he's perfectly capable of tears. For that matter, her Jim is capable of tears when warranted, too. The relationship is definitely Big Brother/Little Brother, and her dialogue is superb. Good terse cop-talk, excellent teasing and banter, and the kind of love and affection you'd expect from brothers. She writes a darn good old-fashioned mystery, too, and this particular story encompasses all that is the best in her writing. There's a great plot, Blair is a true Trouble Magnet, and they totally have each other's back. Simon is a major player too -- he's like the Extra Big Brother that Blair would rather ditch sometimes than deal with. In fact... well, read it and see!

01:26 pm Tibbles to the Rescue by Gil Hale (PG)
Since I've been a bit slow, I think another rec is in order:

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim and Blair (this is gen, no actual pairing)
Length: 15kb
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Gil Hale's Fan Fiction
Why this must be read:

This story is hysterically funny and completely adorable! Gil is a great writer and while some of her stories are absolutely dead-serious drama, others show her deft sense of humor. This one is written from the point of view of the cat down the hall, and a cat's-eye view is both perceptive (in a food-oriented sort of way) and refreshing. Truly enjoyable -- and you don't have to be a cat-lover to appreciate it.

01:26 pm Meow Mail by Gil Hale (PG)
Bonus rec! While doing all the necessary research for my last post, I saw that Gil has posted another Tibbles story. I didn't include it with the other as it's sort of a sequel/not quite a series... so here we go again!

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: None
Length: 11kb
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Gil Hale's Fan Fiction
Why this must be read:

Another hilarious Tibbles story -- yay! In this one we find that the feline bond between Jim and Tibbles is growing. Tibbles may actually be getting... *rough*?? Hmmmm. Let's keep the jury out on that one. Onward to:

02:21 pm The Light of a Fading Sun by Sholio (PG-13)
Fandom: STARGATE: ATLANTIS
Pairing: gen
Length: 93,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper
Author Website: City on the Ocean's Edge

Why this must be read:

I love this story particularly because it's a fic based off of Doranda which is one of my favorite story lines the show gave us, and because it's a multiverse. But the best part about it is the rich characterization.

This one hits you with a punch, even if you're not a McKay/Sheppard shipper like I am. The boys' friendship is in a horrible mess, it's almost nonexistant at the start. Additionally, it's a totally different Atlantis than the one we've come to know and love where the military and scientists haven't gotten along since they reconnected with Earth. The Arcturus Project is a go, sanctioned by the military because McKay goes over Weir's head, further enhancing tensions. But despite this, there's quite a few surprises ahead for our team.

It's a bit of a dark fic, but nonetheless, it feels like a more realistic situation than the writers of SGA ever gave us. It's got action, bitterness, rivalries, politics, and great characterization. The author weaves a wonderful, intricate, and detail-oriented tale that takes you on an emotional rollercoaster. And in the end, it's really all about friendship and the bumps it passes over.

08:08 pm Science made them Do It by Auntie Climatic (R)
Fandom: EUREKA
Pairing: Jack/Stark
Length: 6,129
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] auntie_climatic
Why this must be read: There may have never been a sexual harassment case in the history of the town, but there was a whole file cabinet reserved for Form NSP – 3710/B. NSP – 3710/B referred to cases involving what Allison tactfully called Induced Misconduct and what Jo called the old Science Made Us Do It excuse.

Because OF COURSE Eureka would need a form and call sign for all the weird stuff that happens. The trip through Carter's series of NSP – 3710/B, from his first to Nathan gleefully making him fill out the form for just about everything to The Incident (Hell yes, Jack was capitalizing it) to that wonderful hug-or-die scenario with BRAD...and a few others after. Such a fun read!
