Hi!  I'm Beatrice Otter, I'm Beatrice Otter, and I'll be your reccer for Battlestar Galactica for the month of June.  I tend to favor Cylon stories, but I'll try to give you a good variety of what's out there, both older gems that have been overlooked and new stories. We'll start out by an old but good one.

Fandom: Battlestar Galactica
Characters: Saul Tigh, Lee Adama
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] inlovewithnight
Author Website: Fic Index
Why this must be read:

Remember back when things were relatively simple, before prophecies and politics and the fleet was torn apart again and again? This fic takes you back then. There's nothing flashy about this story, it's just a good character moment between two characters early on in the first season. This story takes place just after "33," and Saul Tigh is heading to his rack for some much needed sleep when he comes across Lee Adama trying to figure out his responsibilities as CAG. Both are exhausted, and neither really knows the other. What life will be like in the Fleet has yet to be seen. But for the first time, it seems like life might go on. In which case, the CAG and the XO had better get to know one another a little.

08:46 am Semi-Permanent Markers by lynnmonster (PG)
Hey, NCIS fans! I've got permission to include the newest boys on the block this month, the increasingly popular Office of Special Projects from Los Angeles (undercover unit). We don't have a full-fledged NCIS: LA fandom overview (ETA: Now we do! Fandom overview this way), but if you need a primer to check out try [livejournal.com profile] gabriellemb's overview of the intro/crossover episodes and the first two eps of the show proper.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] drlense has done a series of slashcaps for the show, and they're hilarious. We don't call it NCIS: Gay for nothing! (Spoilers abound in the previous two links, however, so reader beware.)

Fandom: NCIS: Los Angeles
Pairing: Sam Hanna/G. Callen
Length: ~1950 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lynnmonster (LJ and at Dreamwidth)
Author Website: Fic tag on LJ
Why this must be read: This story launches off a scene from an early episode of the show where Sam and G visit a tattoo parlour during the investigation. It's got just the right blend of innuendo and playfulness that the show itself has ... and maybe a little more. *g* Enjoy!

Things you might need to know )

'So who are we this time?' Sam asked as they approached the bistro. )

Hello! I'm [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] and I'll be your MAGNIFICENT SEVEN driver for the month of June. I read mostly Chris/Vin and gen with a few other from time to time so I'll try to rec something for everyone. Also I'm hoping to have a nice mix of Old West, ATF, and a few other AUs this month.

Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (Old West)
Pairing: Gen
Length: Approx 368K
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: SueN's Magnificent 7 Stories
Why this must be read: This is one of those stories that makes the reader laugh and cry at the same time. The characterization is spot on and I could hear the banter in the boy's voices in my head. The premise was also something I could really see in the show and be describe as this: horse thieves steal Vin Tanner's horse. In this we also see sides of the characters that were touched on but never really brought to the surface that often. For example JD's conviction that they are family and family sticks together.

Warnings: Horse abuse.

02:46 pm This Unimportant Morning, by auberus (NC17 or X)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Methos/ Duncan McLeod
Length: 5230
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] auberus
Author Website: on Skyehawke
Why this must be read: This is a lovely look at Duncan and Methos patching together their friendship after Byron's death, and creating something entirely different. Auberus's writing is lovely, the way it always is, clean and sharp and word-perfect, and the characterization is just right, and the smut is completely hot. So, really, it's win-win-win.

Hello all! I'm [livejournal.com profile] ssquirrel_fic and this month I'll be reccing for Young Dracula. I may be a massive Robin / Vlad fangirl, but I'm going to do my best to rec as wide a range of fic as I can. :D

Fandom: Young Dracula
Pairing: Robin / Vlad
Length: c. 1,900
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] glasgow_guy
Author Website: Fanfiction.net Account
Why this must be read:

I want to start with this one because, in many ways, it sums up what the show is about - growing up and learning to get on with your embarrassing family! Mr. Branagh arranges a family trip to the seaside, Vlad comes along for the ride. It's well written, funny, and will undoubtedly leave you with a smile on your face.

Excerpt: (On realising Mrs. Branagh has packed speedo instead of swimming trunks.)

"How could you do this to me Mum!" Robin wailed.

"They're fine, Robin. You'll look very confident, and Continental."

05:11 pm Jasper's Last Thought, by MD1016 (PG)
Hi everyone! I'm Red, and I'll be driving the van for The X-Files this month. I've been an active reader since 1997, at the age of 12, and have now been in the XF fandom for more than half my life. (Yikes.) This month I'm looking forward to sharing some of my personal favorites. I love an original premise; one of the best parts of the XF fandom is the continual supply of new interpretations on the same material.

Fandom: The X-Files
Pairing: Mulder/Scully

Why this must be read:
This author's works have been favorites of mine for a long, long time; this story in particular. This odd-ball of a post-abduction fic has stuck with me for many years thanks to a truly original and interesting concept and the complete world created in stripped-down and precise language.

05:45 pm Musicality by trillingstar (PG-13)
Fandom: NCIS: Los Angeles
Pairing: Sam Hanna/G. Callen (not explicit)
Length: ~3600 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] trillingstar
Author Website: Fic and Art on LJ
Why this must be read: Sometimes a story fools you--you think it's going to be one thing, and then it reveals itself to be something else entirely. "Musicality" is one of those stories. At first glance, it's a bit of insight into the workings of the NCIS: LA crew on the job. Dom's still new, and Sam's guiding him through their undercover gig.

But where the story really shines is in its subtlety. It's really about Sam--what he wants, what he needs. How he finds himself through music. It's all that I love best about jazz scenes--getting lost in the music, smoky air and smoky sound, something like longing in every note. Don't overlook this piece--it's a wonderful gem.

G thinks Sam's nuts for living above a nightclub. Too loud, G said. Too screechy. )

08:35 pm Losing When by starshinedown (PG13)
Fandom:HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Gen (Methos/ OFC)
Length: 1,000-3,000
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] starshinedown
Author Website: At AOW
Why this must be read: Even a master of survival has the occasional off moment. This is how I picture Methos: infinitely adaptable, but not infallible. And, unlike most OFCs, this woman is unobtrusive, out of focus. This is a character piece, and it captures Methos perfectly.

Why this must be read: Why? Because there are not many people who can write a whole story in just 100 words. And what a story it is!

And now, from the beginning of the series we go to the end!

Fandom: Battlestar Galactica
Pairing: It's an ensemble story with canon pairings.  Seriously, it's long and has everyone in it somewhere.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] grey_sw
Author Website: AO3, LJ Masterlist.
Why this must be read:

The second half of season four spawned a whole host of AUs.  Some were long, some were short.  This 2009 [livejournal.com profile] bsg_bigbang story is one of the best.  Sam Anders dies in the mutiny. He resurrects on the Colony, where Cavil is working to save his people. At the same time, Starbuck and Adama are trying to save the Fleet from his people... and Boomer, Baltar, and Tyrol are still trying to save everyone, each in their own strange way.  The plot has many satisfying twists and turns, and everyone gets their moment in the sun.  It's a great read, and more satisfying than what Ron Moore and Co. gave us.

Hi all! This is Toast again, driving the DCU van for your pleasure! I'll be trying to focus on some of the wider reaching pieces of DC Comics, so hold on to your hats :D

Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Guy Gardner/Kyle Rayner
Length: >4000
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] merelyfic
Author Website: Writer's LJ
Why this must be read:

[livejournal.com profile] merelyfic takes the "Suddenly! We're mind linked!" cliche and turns it into a legitimately awesome fic, pulling Guy and Kyle through a slow, natural sort of love story with a lot of humor and a dash of heat. I enjoyed it quite a lot!
