How Leoben Conoy got his name, and why he keeps it.

Leoben is hard to write, and this short fic nails him perfectly.

Fandom: The X-Files
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Length: 39k

Why this must be read:

This casefile is just lovely, with just the right touches of humor and detail to give the story life in its own self-contained universe. Also, I'm a sucker for a good ending line, and the conclusion here is fantastic, ending things on a dreamy, bittersweet note.

06:16 pm It's a Good Life, Sir by Iridaceaena (PG)

Fandom: JEEVES & WOOSTER
Pairing: gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] iridaceaena
Author Website: lj fic tag
Why this must be read:

World War II is looming, but this isn't a war fic. [livejournal.com profile] iridaceaena, in fact, calls it "an unwar fic," which is just what it is. We've got the same old problems-- Aunt Agatha wants Bertie to marry some girl, Jeeves dispenses with her lecture in pitch-perfect fashion (a bonus is a rare and deft glimpse of a hint that Aunt A. might actually be human), and Bertie wants out of it. Through conversation woven out of Bertie-isms and literary references, we gain a bit of backstory for both Bertie and Jeeves, and an illustration of how protective Jeeves is of Bertie's sunny innocence.

I won't spoil it for you (not that I could really explain it), but the same magic that Wodehouse commands to keep Bertie's world untouched by the serious and the weighty is in force here, and I'm happy to accept it as canon fact.

Fandom: STAR TREK:REBOOT
Pairing: Jim Kirk, Spock, Kirk/Spock
Length: ~6000
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] seperis
Author Website: Author page at AO3

Why this must be read:

After a bar, in Iowa. Both Kirk and Spock in the reboot universe were ‘delinquents’ in their youth. This fiction explores this commonality with a deft touch that still kicks you in the gut.

Seriously, just read the excerpt. )

10:27 pm Seasons and Spices (G)
Fandom: NEWSIES
Pairing: Blink/Mush
Length: ~3,500
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] project_lyse
Author Website: FFnet profile
Why this must be read:

Moving along from epic AU, here's a short, more canon-y piece. One of the great things about Newsies is that there's a lot of room to build with the characters; while a few are very well developed in canon, plenty of others have only hints of personality that leave authors open to play and develop. Blink and Mush (the boys flirting in my icon) fall into the later category: while they're almost always floating around in the background of the movie, they have only a handful of lines between them. Yet they're among the "main six" characters in fandom.

This piece demonstrates why. It's a lovely, quiet piece that does a lot with Mush's POV and the way he views the world -- and especially the way he views Blink, and the relationship between them.
