03:44 pm Northwest Passages, by Wintercreek (R)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Length: 1,537 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] wintercreek
Author Website: ds fics
Why this must be read: because [livejournal.com profile] wintercreek is one of the hidden gems of our fandom and this story is a perfect example of why. Ray Kowalski ponders the meaning of Northwest Passages from the vantage of his settled life, thinking about where he's been and where he is now. It's a lovely introspective piece topped off with a terrible come-on line and laughter.

04:35 pm Extraordinary Lengths by madeyemax (NC-17)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Percy/Barty Crouch Jr.
Length: 46,970
Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Author Website: bloodywellwrite
Why this must be read:

Because it's fascinating to watch as Percy Weasley gets in way over his head in this slightly twisted tale; everyone from Mr. Crouch to Arthur, and even Winky, are so well written, you can tell that this is an author who knows their characters. And as Barty's functioning insanity and Percy's Gryffindorish arrogance come to a collision point, the end result will leave readers wanting more.

06:24 pm The Work Of Coming Home, by Luzula (NC17)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Length: >20k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] luzula
Author Website: @ AO3
Why this must be read: because ever since I saw the episode Asylum I have been wanting a Mountie!Ray story, and here is [livejournal.com profile] luzula giving me exactly what I've always wanted. \o/

[livejournal.com profile] luzula's story takes place after the Quest, showing us what happens once Fraser and Ray ride off into the sunset. It's not easy, it's never going to be easy for these two, but they're committed to making things work. [livejournal.com profile] luzula's writing is clean and spare, and her storytelling skills are excellent. She brings Ray, Fraser and their family and friends to life.

For the past month I've enjoyed so much sharing my favorite stories with you. This is my last set for June: The Serious Relationship Recs.

Fandom: BANDOM
Pairing: Ashlee/Pete
Length: 16,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] longtime_lurker
Author Website: Tag list
Why this must be read:

One of the most well-researched, honest, serious stories about Ashlee Simpson herself, told as she comes to know herself. She picks up Pete along the way when she finds out they know each other better than they even realized. A quiet, startling fic that packs sleeper punch. (Featuring Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy.)

Fandom: BANDOM
Pairing: Jamia/Frank
Length: 4,400 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mrsronweasley
Author Website: Fic Masterlist
Why this must be read:

Caustic but romantic, this story has the epic feel of how Jamia and Frank might have gotten together while still living in the daily grind of their lives. The contrast of the immediate connection between them and the hard realities of their lives is something to savor. Their devotion to each other and desperation for each other shines through so much that I might have swooned the first time reading this, maybe, but you don't have any proof of that. (Featuring Frank from My Chemical Romance and Jamia Nestor, his wife and CEO of Skeleton Crew.)

09:49 pm Black Ice by LKY (PG-13)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: none
Length: 93k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lky
Author Website: Tales by LKY
Why this must be read:

I mostly read slash, but I do have a soft spot for the occasional gen h/c fest, and this one has got all the elements I like: a hurt Blair who's not a fragile wimp, a comforting Jim who's not overly mushy, an engaging mystery, cute banter between the boys, and a deep and profound friendship. My heart was won with this excerpt:

"Jim? Did we... er, snuggle last night?"

"Yep."

"Huh." Blair let that sink in for a second, weighing his craving to be warm against his reluctance to crowd his friend.

He felt Jim roll over. A familiar warm arm snaked around Blair's waist and pulled him back against the delicious warmth.

"Come here. I'll never get any sleep if you shake the bed all night with your shivering."

Blair sighed with pleasure. "Don't care if you respect me in the morning, man. Just make with the heat."

Jim laughed. "Behave yourself, Chief. Go to sleep."

10:17 pm Runaway by Rebecca Thomson and Valerie Vancollie (PG-13)
Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: Gen, mainly Luke and Vader
Length: 46,732 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Valerie Vancollie's SW website (fanfiction section); her ff.net profile
Why this must be read:
What if Luke had run away from the Lars farm and enrolled in the Imperial Academy? And what if Vader had discovered him? The authors of Runaway show us one rather horrifying possibility. This is a classic and a must-read for everyone who likes dark AUs.

There are many fanfics in which Luke turns dark and/or joins Vader. This story is probably the most well-written of them all. It is better written than much of the Star Wars profic, I kid you not.

Fandom: STAR TREK:REBOOT
Characters/Pairings: Kirk/Spock (pre-slash)
Length: ~4500
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] blcwriter
Author Website:

Why this must be read:
Spock's mother knit him a sweater, which develops a hole. Kirk knits it shut-- their friendship develops from there. One of the more amusing bits of fanon to arise after the movie is in regards to an ugly sweater that Spock wears during the movie. It is so ugly and ill fitting that the only logical reason Spock would wear such a garment is that his mother made it for him. This story is stunning and sweet and the image of a barefoot, glasses wearing, knitting Kirk? HOT.
