File 40Why this must be read:On the road again, and this time we're visiting Napoleon and Illya pre-series, via one of my favorite MFU authors,
tgabrielle.
Lime Jello-O is a wonderful character study: sly, funny, acerbic at times; it gives us the pleasure of eavesdropping on Solo and Kuryakin as they have a late lunch together in the Uncle Commissary.
They've known each other for two months, worked together a couple of times and there's an obvious connection forming--but there are also two healthy egos jockeying for position.
tgabrielle has an exceptional eye for telling details and she catches the rhythms of speech; her Napoleon and Illya are bright, their verbal sparring calculated. As you see them dancing around each other, you can sense the attraction, just as you can sense where the faultlines will be--Illya's practiced elusiveness, and Napoleon's urge to possess and control. There's also a lovely cameo by Mr. Waverly, who comes to the cafeteria to enjoy the Tuna Wiggle Special; or is that
really why he's there?
“You have a girlfriend?” Solo asked and damned the incredulity in his tone.
Kuryakin blinked and tilted his head. His expression hardly changed but seemed to darken. “You are surprised?” Illya asked, sounding at once careful and dangerous, no shyness to his question—no deference, no charm—just a blunt matter-of-factness.
“I’m not,” Solo replied, too quickly, as if rushing to mask his former disbelief, uncomfortable with his friend’s bland and censuring gaze. “How long have you been going out?” He meant to sound light and politely curious, not amazed. Or jealous. He certainly wasn’t jealous.
“A few months,” Kuryakin said, in a more relaxed tone, though he held Solo’s stare as if daring him to blink. He counted the months off on the fingers of his undamaged right hand. “Four.”
