01:55 am A Thing About Elevators by Helen W. (G)
So, after the last couple of serious pieces, it’s time for something a bit lighter, eh?

Fandom:
The Sentinel
Pairing: none
Length: 12K
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] wneleh
Author Website: http://www.murphnet.org/fanfic/

Why this must be read: Because I was in an elevator with an expired inspection certificate and realized it was a sign from above.  I just had to recommend this story!  ::grins::

Helen is a diverse storyteller. She writes angsty, she writes quirky, she writes episodic. And she writes humor. This short, witty epilogue to "Dead Drop" provides a nice counterpoint to what I found to be an uneven episode. And it has, wonder of wonders, a nicely written OFC who is neither a bitch nor a Mary Sue.

A Thing About Elevators

And Helen must have a *thing* about "Dead Drop". She wrote another funny and poignant epilogue called ”Dropping” by Blair, in which we see Blair using an unusual coping mechanism to deal with the emotional aftermath. Check it out and her other stuff and then send her some feedback. She welcomes any and all!

01:03 pm To Grow Weary Of The Sun by naladot (PG-13)
Fandom: DOLLHOUSE
Pairing: DeWitt/Dominic
Length: 2700K
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] naladot
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read:

The period encompassing Epitaph 1 and 2 is vague at best and many in the fandom have tackled this period of time. Naladot wrote what I would consider one of the most unflinching, melancholy take on the Epitaph period, painting Safe Haven as anything but, as much as a useful lie as the Dollhouse itself was. The details of this life are refreshingly creative, as is the supporting cast.

This is an DeWitt/Dominic piece, but what I adore is that this is melancholy Adelle DeWitt at it's core, heavy and raw. I feel no shame in saying I cried a little at the end.

05:40 pm The Book of Memory by ignipes (PG)
Fandom: MERLIN
Pairing: Gen; Hunith
Length: 750
Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Author Website: 'fic.list' tag
Why this must be read:

This piece is a wonderful character study of Hunith during the months she was pregnant with Merlin, it's quite and soft and a great take on this often times overlooked woman.

Hunith learns to read by candlelight in the midwife's cottage.

06:39 pm Want. Take. Have. by toestastegood (NC-17)
Fandom: HEROES
Pairing: Mohinder/Eden
Length: 892
Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Author Website: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Why this must be read:

It's dirty, and hot, and so very, very wrong. The way that Eden justifies taking advantage of Mohinder to herself really makes sense from the hints we saw from canon about the darker implications of her power. Reading this piece sent shivers up my spine and made me a fan of the pairing.

You kiss him like you'll drown if you pull away.

07:32 pm Candy Apple Dreams by LilyK (PG)
Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Length: 2882
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sc_fossil
Author Website: http://daveandkensdiner.com/
Why this must be read: I remember the challenge this was written for--what if Starsky and Hutch had never met? I like the way LilyK alters their lives so that they come together through very different circumstances than the police academy, as fanon suggests. Starsky is still a cop but Hutch is a school teacher on the first day, and he already has a problem student. He sets up a meeting with the troubled boy's father...

10:02 pm Or To Take Arms by scrollgirl (PG)
Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS
Pairing: None (John Sheppard & Ronon Dex gen)
Length: 4560 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] scrollgirl
Author Website: Fic index
Why this must be read:

Or To Take Arms starts with Ronon finding out what John did in Miller's Crossing, to save Jeannie, and goes from there into a fascinating exploration of how Ronon and John think about the Wraith, and the way Atlantis is working with them. The excerpt under the cut perfectly captures why this is hard for both of them: because for John, it's doing what he has to in order to keep people safe and everything still moving forward, but for Ronon, it's completely inconceivable to allow someone to feed themselves to the Wraith.

scrollgirl writes brilliant Ronon point of view, and does a lovely job of getting across how much he and John care for each other and want to be understood by each other, even if that involves dragging up stuff that really hurts, for both of them.

11:36 pm The Prey and the Predator by Swanpride (K+)

Fandom: The Sentinel
Pairing: none
Length: 2200 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] swanpride
Author Website: http://www.fanfiction.net/u/852339/swanpride

Why this must be read: The premise of purposeful deception by any of the major characters, although not unique, is rarely seen in this fandom.

"Prey and Predator" is a very short story that I won’t describe or quote because pretty much anything I say will lessen its impact. I came across this as I was looking at new arrivals at the Cascade Library. Swanpride is German and admits that she didn’t have an English beta for the first part. So some of the wording and spelling is a little rough. If that’s not a show-stopper for you, then get set for an interesting and twisty story.

Half the time I was laughing at her audacity; for the rest I admired how she wove canon all through her ideas. It’s a shame that she’s not planning to flesh it out any further. Don’t forget to read both parts.
