This was part of the 2007 sentinelsecrets challenge. I’ve found I have quite a number of fic kinks (besides the smutty kind). One is stories where the guys are domestic enough to do things *I* enjoy doing, like cooking and gardening. Another is when one of them does things that I would *like* to do, like climbing Kilimanjaro or living on a self-sufficient commune. This cute slice-of-life hits those kinks. Sadly, I’m in mourning that my veggie garden didn’t produce this year and that I’m not eating juicy tomatoes and sweet corn; reading this tale cheers me up. The story also reminds me of a time when I worked near a community garden. I always wanted the office folk to pitch in on a patch, but no interest. I’ll bet if we’d had Blair, there would have been women clamoring to join him digging in the dirt! Enjoy. Zucchini, Tomatoes and Corn, oh My! One thing I’ve always appreciated about Starwatcher was how she set up her LJ fic. You get a choice of fonts and sizes, which is a welcome blessing for my eyes. Fandom: MARVEL COMICS Pairing: Steve Rogers/Tony Stark Length: 18,600 words Author on LJ: valtyrAuthor Website: Valtyr's fanfiction at Archive of Our OwnWhy this must be read: This story, set in the Ultimates universe, is structurally similar to some of the 'breather' stories published by Marvel Comics; it's a moment in time between long, violent story arcs. It's set after Volume 2 of the Ultimates, and before Volume 3. The Ultimates are licking their wounds, dealing with their regrets and pain, and chary of the future. There are beautifully executed portrayals of the characters. Valtyr is able to give the characterization the time and care that the canon writers sometimes sacrifice for yet more slam-bang action scenes, and her characters have a more accessible inner life. They become more understandable and more likable, though no less flawed. The storytelling is also beautifully done. The action is restricted in space and time. The setting is limited to the mansion and its grounds, through which the Ultimates wander, dealing with each other in little groups of two or three, rarely more. And also it has a nice moment of snarky Lorne conversation with Sheppard ( penknife always does a fantastic job of writing Lorne, if you're a fan of his). penknife does a great job in this fic of drawing out Ronon's sense of Atlantis still not being quite right, even if it is home, especially at Christmas; she also writes really great John, longing and in pain and keeping up his facade. Fandom: BANDOM Pairing: Gen (My Chemical Romance and The Used) Length: 10k Author on LJ: wordscomekindaAuthor Website: None Why this must be read: In the interest of full disclosure, this fic was basically written for me. But, and I say this as objectively as I can, it is a really awesome story. wordscomekinda builds a stark space AU about one guy in the grasp of an authoritarian government. Her Bob voice is superb and befitting the situation: a little harried, a little run down, but he's still the same good, sarcastic guy. My favorite part of this is the spirit of defiance that (eventually) fights back against everything else. This is ultimately a story about standing in the face of overwhelming power and corruption--no matter how you found yourself in the line of sight--and saying no, fighting back. Defiance and speaking up for what's right is a big part of what My Chemical Romance represents to me, and I think she translates this beautifully into this AU. When I'm looking not just for a fic that's hot but one that also has a strong story, this is one of the ones I come back to over and over again. This is set back when Panic was a foursome still riding the popularity of A Fever You Can't Sweat Out and Jon was still the new kid on the block. Brendon has a secret that Jon stumbles upon: Brendon likes to wear panties. Jon discovers that he likes it when Brendon wears panties. It's obvious from the amount of comments and tags on delicious that this is a pretty popular fic, and with good reason. This is one of those stories that I read probably a year ago and keep reading. It's gorgeous, not just because the kink is hot--and holy crap if you're open to a panty kink this is pretty hot--but also because the story is so wonderful.
