02:00 am Sensory [re:]Generation by demonqueen666 (PG-13)
Fandom: DOLLHOUSE
Pairing: Topher/Dominic, Dominic/DeWitt, Topher/DeWitt, Topher/Dominic/DeWitt
Length: around 1200K
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] demonqueen666
Author Website: NA
Why this must be read:

Sensory [re:]Generation is one of a small number of completely alternate universe stories I've come across in the fandom, and one of the few that features such incredible world building, taking place in a world that feels both familiar and fresh, an homage to everything amazing found in The Fifth Element, Blade Runner, The Matrix and Dollhouse. With the addition of vampires.

No, really. Sensory is a crafted AU cyberpunk dystopian with alluring rock gods and vampires that remains true to the characters. This story is everything awesome done right.

11:07 am Four Ways Starsky and Hutch may have Visited Neverland by Audrey
My last rec of the month and it's been fun steering the van all over the map in Bay City!

Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Length: 1282
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: http://meandthee.shahrazad.net/author.php?authorid=91
Why this must be read: Four short very sweet and sad stories that I'm ashamed to admit I'd forgotten all about since they were written for me as for a Secret Santa prezzie! Thanks, Audrey! Be warned, there is one with character death. But as a big fan of Peter Pan, I love the way bits of Barrie's novel are intermingled with glimpses of older Starsky and Hutch.

05:11 pm Slow Dance podfic written and read by Lamardeuse (PG-13)

Since this is my last rec of the month, I want to share again how much I love driving. I would encourage you all to take a turn. Our fandom is strong and diverse – show us how much so by sharing your favorite stories. It is so much fun! Ta.

Fandom: The Sentinel
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Length: 7 minutes
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lamardeuse
Author Website:   where the world is puddle-wonderful  Dreamwidth and at AO3 http://archiveofourown.org/users/lamardeuse

Why this must be read heard: It’s like accessing another part of your brain to enjoy fanfic even more!

Podfic in general: Do you know about podfic? It’s fanfic read aloud, either by the author or someone else, sometimes with music or artwork added. It’s been around for a while and there’s communities like  [livejournal.com profile] amplificathon  and archives like Audiofic  (where I found this podfic) devoted to it. I resisted for quite a while – how could someone match Jim and Blair’s “voices” to what I had in my head while I read them? Still, it’s a legitimate fanwork so I downloaded and tried a few. ::sigh:: I was transported back to Kindergarten when the teacher read to us during storytime. Yes, some readings were better than others, as some fic is better than others. Overall I’ve been quite happy with what I’ve heard. An added bonus was I could get the dusting done while indulging in my favorite guilty pleasure.

Podfic specific: Why choose this particularly? Well, I really liked the story – sweet and poignant. Jim believes that everything is hunky dory, until a chance overheard conversation brings him a home truth. Second, it’s read by the author, and I was curious to see how those “voices” sounded inside her head. I liked them.

So, if you haven’t tried podfic, general or specific, give it a whirl. And, if you have been enjoying them already, just tell me “well, duh!”

06:07 pm Feeling the Future on Your Skin by tuesdaysgone (R)
Fandom: BANDOM
Pairing: Bob/Gerard, Bob/Frank/Gerard, implied Dan/Jepha
Length: ~20k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tuesdaysgone
Author Website: All fics are hosted at Dreamwidth
Why this must be read:

As far as space operas go, this is one of my favorites. There's mystery, rebellion, a little bit of romance and a smidge of the fantastic, all wrapped up in the infinite package of space.

This is roughly a Dune AU but knowledge of Dune canon is not required, tuesdaysgone does a wonderful job of letting you know what's going on organically so that it doesn't even matter that you've never read the book or flown in a space ship, it feels real. As someone who only very vaguely remembers anything about Dune, I didn't feel like I was missing any part of the story without having that backbone. The details borrowed from that give the story more of a solid ground to stand on and a truly epic scope. The descriptions are beautiful and the tone is perfect, and all of the characters come together perfectly.

Length: 4,225

Why this must be read:

Stonehenge. Drunk Arthur. Little Nimueh. This is a wonderful Merlin-saves-the-day piece. I loved the tension between Nimueh and Melin, their interactions have always fascinated me, and the pictures throughout really add to the dreamlike quality of the story.

Fandom: HEROES
Pairing: Gen; Matt Parkman
Length: 1,184
Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Author Website: Collected Fanfiction Post
Why this must be read:

I loved how this author shows how Matt's interactions with other people have changed since the day he discovered he was a telepath. The small character details of what people sound like in his head from the cold preciseness of Angela Petrelli to Ted Sprague's never ending grief were very well done; I loved looking at them anew through Matt's eyes.

Matt believes that Molly's voice was the first that he ever heard in his head.
