Title: The Waiting Room
Pairing: Gen
Length: 2,068 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] amonitrate
Author Website: Palpable Obscure
Why this must be read:

Sending Jo Harvelle (an unfairly neglected character in canon and fanon), so like and unlike Laura Palmer or Annie Blackburn, to Glastonberry Grove is a brilliant move. Supernatural and Twin Peaks share some elements -- a blue-collar aesthetic; the darkness in the woods; blondes who comes to bad ends -- yet are very different in terms of atmosphere and ethos. So far, the puzzles and threats of Supernatural have all proved explicable, whereas the mysteries of Twin Peaks are infamously unsolved and insoluble. [livejournal.com profile] amonitrate does justice both to Jo's feistiness and the intractably alien nature of the place on the other side of the curtain.
Deep in the woods, Washington state, night, and Jo isn't afraid of the dark.

She isn't. Not even when she stumbles into a clearing ringed with saplings, like something out of some stupid ass Grimm's fairy tale. Not even when light had flickered and strobed out of no where on the other side of the ring and she'd seen the glassy black pool in the center, reflecting only the trees. Not even when the air had shimmered and changed and a hum drifted back to her and between one blink and the next red curtains appeared, moving lightly in the breeze. Red curtains, hanging in the middle of the woods.

Maybe she wasn't afraid of the dark, but that was a mite unnerving.

Why this must be read:

This is a wonderfully gritty AU. Angsty, conflicted cop hooks up with mysterious prostitute, leading to more angst, lovely h/c, hot sex. Be aware, there's some sexual violence, though not between S&H. The guys' characterization is spot-on.

Fandom: STAR WARS

Length: ~3000 words

Why this must be read:

The author's summary, "Three things that never happened before the rise of the empire, three consequences that never followed" brings the van off-road along a happy detour into the inspiration that bends explicit canon events. Each segment in this tri-part fic shows off selonbrody's unique gift of creating an alternate universe in prose as spare as it is evocative: we want to know more about these disparate worlds, the mark of a finely-crafted AU. She has pursued one alternate universe to a most satisfying degree, and in the featured story as well, Obi-Wan and Satine, Kit and Aayla, Anakin and Padmé inhabit their relationships completely in character, though their circumstances morphed into a different quadrant of the Galaxy Far, Far Away.

Why this must be read:

I love this universe and the characters in it enormously. It's one of the most realistic yet hopeful depictions of severe depression and how hard trying to recover is that I've read in any fandom ever. It's sad and happy and bittersweet and hopeful and full of love.

The writing is both realistic and symbolic and I love the way light and colours play such an important part both for the characters and for the way the story develops. How the dark and "dead" garden & home of the Ways and the light and "life" of Ray's gardening team begin interacting, leading to both the dead garden and Gerard and Mikey's life slowly starting to grow and change again.

The characters are all absolutely wonderful in their own unique ways. Ray so thoughtful and good, Frank colourful and enthusiastic, Bob a quiet, unflappable force, and of course Gerard & Mikey, how much they love and worry about each other.

This is an absolutely fantastic story and while reading it can be emotionally exhausting it's also deeply satisfying.
