12:40 am Pieces tossed aside by ana_grrl (R)
Happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow Canadians. Hope you had a good one!

Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: A tiny bit of Mal/Simon and Kaylee/Jayne.
Length: 9317 words
Author on LJ:
[info]ana_grrl

Why this must be read:
It's scary, it's creepy, and it's by
[info]ana_grrl .
I don't usually read Apocalypse Fics but this one is just so well done its worth it.
Ana_grrl paints a depressing picture of what would happen if a sickness started taking out the planets in the firefly verse. Her characters are spot on as per usual and slightly worrying with their responses to what's happening. This story is quite horrifying so if you want a happy ending please don't read it.

01:15 am A Last Family Christmas by Emerald (G)
Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: none
Length: 27,321
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Unknown – her listed website address is invalid
Warning: This is a 3 hanky story.
Why this must be read:

Unless your heart is a lot harder than mine, I would not recommend reading this in public. Like most good Christmas stories it’s predictable and uses the old tried and true to tug at the heartstrings. But it still works. I could so easily have seen this as an actual episode on TV. Warning though, the last line is a real killer when you think about the rest of the season. I think Tony is portrayed a bit too ‘stupid’ at the very beginning, but then I’m a Tony fan and may be prejudiced. Basically it’s a Tim McGee story with the ensembled cast standing behind him.

07:49 am Better the Devil by seaouryou (PG-13)
Fandom: SUPERNATURAL
Pairing: Dean/Castiel (minor, off-screen)
Length: ~ 13,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] seaouryou
Author Website: herostratic - fic journal
Why this must be read: The time between seasons always brings a fruitful batch of fic, postulating what happens after the season finale. In this one, Season 5 ends with the boys killing Lucifer, and Cas disappearing. It isn't long before they hear rumours that he's in Hell, and Dean is determined to bring him back.

The twist is that Castiel isn't a prisoner. He's there by choice, and the unfolding of that story is a lovely exploration of the character and all the show's glorious absent-father issues. Bonus: almost all the show's important characters (living or dead) show up at some point, and although the story has its moments of angst, there's definitely a good balance of humour.

Dean pulled out the Colt and cocked it. 'You're going to bring Castiel back.' )

08:58 am Negotiating with Terrorists (and other post-apocalyptic adventures) by pyrebi (PG-13)
Fandom: SUPERNATURAL
Pairing: Dean/Castiel
Length: ~ 3850 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] pyrebi
Author Website: fanfiction tag on journal
Why this must be read: After Castiel's line in 5.22 about leaving to become the "new sheriff" in Heaven, many authors took the concept and ran away with it, to the delight of fandom. There are several things I love about this story: 1) the description of how heaven is set up is imaginative; 2) Castiel thinks nothing of killing Dean to transport him to Heaven when he needs him; 3) and Ash and the Roadhouse crew are awesome as the rebels leading a revolt within Heaven. Add in a smidgeon of Dean/Cas and you've got the makings of an entertaining read.

Castiel tries to settle the angelic ranks, Dean tries to live a normal life, Sam tries to not actually exist, and a gaggle of dead hunters tries to take over Heaven. There are varying levels of success. )

01:47 pm Waiting Place by Rachael Sabotini (NC-17)

Fandom: STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE
Pairing: Qui-Gon Jinn/Obi-Wan Kenobi
Length: 142k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] wickedwords
Author Website: house o' fic
Why this must be read:
This is the kind of story that draws you in from the start; excellent writing, plenty of angst, and luscious first time love.  Take it in slowly, as there are two past story-lines at play, helping to sort through the emotional difficulties that the fellows must over-come in the present.

Summary: A mission goes awry, and a year later, Qui-Wan and Qui-Gon are dealing with the consequences of what happened, to their relationship and to themselves.

03:52 pm my people were fair and had sky in their hair by Carina (R)
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Doctor/Rose
Length: 1,110
Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Author Website: Profile at A Teaspoon And An Open Mind
Why this must be read:

The pacing of this piece is just gorgeous, the Doctor's observations of Rose as he sees the Universe through her eyes is breathtaking; you can see how much he loves her. This author is very talented, she knows how to pull the reader's romantic heartstrings just right.

It will be a few years on and the hurt you have will not have lessened, but you will have learned new ways of pretending not to think about it. (her).

my people were fair and had sky in their hair (but now they're content to wear the stars on their brows)
