12:41 am The Beginning, by lyras (PG)
I’ll be reccing the small but perfectly formed Lord Peter Wimsey fandom this month. It’s a reasonably active and quite varied fandom, producing fic that ranges from painstakingly canon-compliant to AU and occasionally bizarrer reaches, with a mix of gen, het and slash. I don’t think anyone has done wingfic yet, but I stand to be corrected. The fandom overview is here.

Fandom: Lord Peter Wimsey
Pairing: Gen: Peter, Bunter.
Length: c.2500
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lyras
Author Website: Not known
Why this must be read:

The Lord Peter Wimsey fandom isn’t large, but it does feature some recurring themes that I'll be touching on in these recs, one of which is, perhaps not unsurprisingly, the Great War and its immediate aftermath. This fic by [livejournal.com profile] lyras takes the scene from the epilogue of Busman’s Honeymoon, in which the Dowager Duchess describes Bunter turning up at Denver after the war when Peter is ill, and gives us a warm portrayal of an unusually uncertain Bunter and a typically distracted yet sharp Duchess.

The drizzle did not make the grand old house with its poplar-lined driveway look any less imposing. A lesser man would have quailed at the sight, but Bunter had faced down English country homes before. He merely smoothed down his suit and sedately peeled off to the left, following the path to the servants' entrance.

When the door was opened by a young and comely housemaid, he relaxed slightly. He was rusty, but he'd always been able to charm women, perhaps because his demeanour was so unthreatening. No woman, he thought, would believe some of the things he'd done in France.

12:55 pm Just another word for nothing left to lose by aboutbunnies
Fandom: LOST
Pairing: Kate/Sayid
Length: ~2000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] aboutbunnies
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read: This is a different take on the sideways that treats this world as a straight-up AU that doesn't have to end. Instead of going off with strangers, Kate and Sayid take their lives into their own hands, and go on the run together after Desmond releases them from prison. It's a great road trip story with perfect characterization that gets back to that great camaraderie/could-have-been-more dynamic they had in season one that brought out the best in both of them.

01:25 pm lay your weary head to rest by angeldylan (PG13)
Fandom: LOST
Pairing: Richard/Jacob
Length: 2000
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] angeldylan628
Author Website: Fic Masterlist
Why this must be read: This is a heart-breakingly poignant imagining of what Jacob and Richard's relationship was like through the years, mostly from Jacob's point of view. It also explains why Jacob never told Richard anything of use. There's so much guilt and angst here, and so much caring. This story provides closure for them by having Hurley play medium. The writing is just amazing and tender and beautiful.

05:25 pm you make my head spin right round by lenina20 (PG-13)
Fandom: THE BIG BANG THEORY
Pairing: Sheldon/Penny, Sheldon/Amy
Length: 5k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lenina20
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] roseof_sharon
Why this must be read:

The introduction of Amy Farrah Fowler (Sheldon's new friend who's a girl but not a girlfriend) is still relatively young in the show's canon, so there hasn't been a lot of fic written involving her. Here we see Penny's take on the situation, weighted heavily by her own feelings towards Sheldon; it's sometimes painful, often awkward, but the writing of the pair of them is beautiful and the emotions very real.

07:56 pm Give Me The Quiet Things by Lady T (NC-17)
Fandom: SHERLOCK
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: approximately 22,800 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lady_t_220
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] den_of_folly
Why this must be read:
I adore amnesia fics and this one in particular really delivers the emotional payload of the genre. This is painfully good. The author skillfully crafts her prose to build the character's quiet desperation and pain through the little details of their thoughts and actions. This fic literally had me breathless with the intensity of it all. The ending is bittersweet and oh so perfect. I highly, wholeheartedly recommend this fic.

08:03 pm Interesting by kerry_louise (NC17)
Fandom: PRIMEVAL
Pairing: Becker/Ryan
Length: 1,089
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] kerry_louise
Author Website: Here
Why this must be read: Primeval has two great Special Forces captains, Ryan in Series 1 and Becker in Series 3. They never meet in canon, but most Primeval authors don’t let minor matters like that stand in the way of a good fic, and this one is a very good fic indeed. It’s a nice, simple and very hot PWP. The perfect thing to warm you up on a cold day.

09:04 pm Walk With Me, by Joe Lawson (R)
Fandom: The Losers
Pairing: Cougar/Jensen with a strong implication of Clay/Roque
Length: 8107
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jaguarcaine
Author's Website: Fiction Masterlist / AO3

Why this must be read:
Jensen battered and bruised with Roque unconscious on his back and Cougar helping him along - it's rough, it's brutal, it's the kind of survival story they'd make a Discovery Channel documentary about, and it feels so *real* that you're battered and bruised just from reading it.

And then a switch is flipped, and it's not just this astounding survival story, it's also this utterly beautiful romance, where Cougar lets Jensen know how he feels, Roque talks too much while concussed, and there is much pwning to be had.

It's an epic, epic story. And it's amazing.

Excerpt:
"You're not going to die," Cougar told him, somewhere between determined and irritable. It was a fine line, but he walked it well.

"I'm not?" Jensen asked, skeptically. "Why's Roque look like he's about to start bawling then?"

Cougar rolled his eyes. "Concussion," he reminded them.

Roque glared at them both, which greatly reassured Jensen. "I'm not about to cry," Roque snarled, somewhat defensively. "I'm fucking seeing two of you."

"Oh." Jensen nodded his understanding. "Must be awesome. No wonder you're all teary-eyed."

10:51 pm Untitled (Stolen) by anima_mecanique / Jack of None (R)
Fandom: RAFFLES
Pairing: A.J. Raffles/Bunny Manders
Length: one-shot, approx. 500 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] anima_mecanique
Author Website: Clockwork Harlequin, alternative site, AO3, FanFiction.net and [livejournal.com profile] adsentatiuncula
Why this must be read:

When it comes to Raffles fandom on LiveJournal, you can thank [livejournal.com profile] anima_mecanique. Her love of turn-of-the-century pulp fiction helped spread the news far and wide about the Victorian era's slashiest couple. She is also the originator of [livejournal.com profile] crimeandcricket. When I discovered Raffles, there were barely a handful of stories out on the web. This was one of them.

11:15 pm Strained Negotiations by Minkhollow (G)
Fandom: WAREHOUSE 13/HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Artie and Dumbledore
Length: 1308 in two chapters
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] minkhollow?

Why this must be read:

I read this one just because of the summary. And because the author describes MacPherson as "McNuttyPants". (A totally apt description if there ever was one.)

Minkhallow has written the Potterverse perfectly into Warehouse 13 canon. While reading this fic you can totally believe that they exist on the same plane of existence. And the way Artie reacts to Dumbledore? Classic.

Summary:
"Dumbledore goes to America seeking to reclaim an important artifact in the fight against Voldemort. It doesn't go quite as smoothly as he would have hoped."

11:26 pm Ice Into Water by jjtaylor (M)
Fandom: SANCTUARY
Pairing: Helen/Nikola, John/Nikola, Helen/John/Nikola
Length: 6,778 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jjtaylor
Author Website: jjtaylor @ AO3
Why this must be read: A beautifully written fic from Nikola's POV about those six weeks between Revelations and End of Nights, and one of my top three favorite fics in the entire fandom. jjtaylor absolutely nails Nikola and his relationships with the other characters. jjtaylor writes a snarky Nikola, yes, but also a far more nuanced Nikola who sees far more deeply than people give him credit for, who in his own way does care. The other characters are incredibly well written as well and the ships work perfectly. I especially love Nikola's observations about Helen and about working for the Sanctuary. And oh, what a killer last sentence! Also, Helen wears really hot shoes and I applaud jjtaylor for taking note of this in the fic.

It is cold when Nikola arrives in Anchorage, at the base of the mountain just behind the city. He guesses he should be thankful that Druitt did not drop him into the embankment and let him slide his way into town.

"Thank you for the lift," he says, and Druitt eyes him balefully, and hands him a pair of fur-lined gloves before teleporting back to the Sanctuary. It is, for Druitt, a remarkably kind gesture.

11:47 pm Death Gets a Latte by lanna_kitty (T)
Fandom: SANCTUARY
Pairing: Will/John friendship
Length: 3,067 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lanna_kitty
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] variousnsundry, Lannakitty @ AO3
Why this must be read: Jack the Ripper is buying me coffee. That sentence was enough to get me to read this fic. Set post-The Five, John and Will have a conversation about Helen and Ashley. In a coffee shop, which is utterly the most loltastic place for this to happen, even though this isn't really a humorous fic. Excellent character insights into Helen and a great depiction of a John trying his best to care for those he loves whether they appreciate it or not.
