12:24 am Waking Up by Gevaudan ~no rating, safe for all
Oh Dear Gods, this month is so SHORT!!! So many recs and so few days! *cries*

Fandom: THE MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: Illya and Napoleon
Length: so short and cute as a bug's ear
Author on LJ: this is not known to me
Author Website: you can find more stories on File 40
Why this must be read: The thing that brings me back to Man from UNCLE again and again, the episodes and the good fiction written by so many writers, is the partnership. I love the friendship between these two characters, I love the way they rely on one another and the way they compliment one another. They are perfectly good men and agents and spies all on their own, but together they are something better. Sometimes they realize that, sometimes it's just under the surface. Here is a little pair of stories I enjoy, like tater chips, you can't have just one. (don't spill the crumbs on the seat, Mr. Waverly makes me pay to clean this van out of my own budget!)

Waking Up Illya and Napoleon

And please remember, if you enjoy this story, a comment to the author is all the payment they get! Show them some love!

02:10 am Free Bitch, by thefourthvine (Gen)
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Gen (Nine, Rose Tyler, Jack Harkness)
Length: 5,203
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine
Author Website: At the AO3
Why this must be read:

One of my favorite offerings from the latest Yuletide story exchange was this bit of genius, in which Nine, Rose, and Jack stumble upon a piece of time that's been rewritten, changing the history of a planet and enslaving a legendary Time Agent, and must try to put it right. Put another way, Nine, Rose, and Jack stumble into several scenes from the video to Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance."

It's an awesome, episode-like story, with great dystopian world-building done to explain the surreal images of the video. The plot is super-cool, twisty and timey-wimey, and the three Doctor Who characters are excellently themselves.

And ever since reading it, I have been convinced that Lady Gaga secretly really is a Time Agent. I bet it'll convince you, too.

'Ah, the Concrete Minimalism school of architecture,' Jack said, surveying the empty room. 'So very dystopian empire, I always think.' )

09:35 am Phoenix Burning by Yahtzee (Up to NC-17)
Fandom: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER / ANGEL: THE SERIES
Pairing: Buffy/Angel, others
Length: Novel-length
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63
Author Website: yahtzee!

Why this must be read: "Phoenix Burning" is one of those fics in Buffyverse fandom, especially in the B/A shipper subsection.  The kind that just about everyone has read and people look at you funny if you do a B/A rec list without it (believe me, I've been there).  And the reputation is not undeserved.  As with most of Yahtzee's work, this fic lays out a fully-conceived world, set centuries in the future with a bevy of original characters that seem as real as the ones we know.  This is, in the words of the person who recommended it to me, "a post-The Gift fic of epic proportions....This is the very best our fandom has ever produced.  If you haven't read it: you must."

And then everything was quiet for a very long time.  )

04:12 pm Pointer (The Awakening Remix) by key_sama (pg)
Fandom: LOST
Characters/Pairings: Juliet; Julian/Clementine
Length: 1,212 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] key_sama
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read:

Be sure to read both fics because they are both wonderful one-shots dealing with ouiji boards and creepy real-world to island communications. Do you really need to know anything else to be convinced? I love the clever remix of a better known fic by a familiar author. This remix is just as good as the original, with the same creepy mood to it, but also a cute touch of humor-I love [livejournal.com profile] key_sama's sassy Clementine.

04:59 pm Constant Hunger (The Way It Stops and Starts) by lovestories (PG-13)
Fandom: THE VAMPIRE DIARIES
Characters/Pairings: Katherine (also canon Katherine pairings, esp. Katherine/Stefan)
Length: 1892 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lovestories
Author Website: fic tag
Why this must be read:
The author manages to make an unusual format feel natural instead of affected. The photographs are both pretty and well-integrated. Katherine's voice is great as well, with the bits of vulnerability occassionally poking through.

05:20 pm Viewing Life Upside Down by Dawnwind (NC-17)
Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Length: 4008 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dawnebeth
Author's Website: Daveandkensdiner
Symmary:
Starsky and Hutch talk after Hutch's night with Anna the ballerina.

Why this must be read:

This is VERY special for me. I read it in a very dark night for me (not that whole last three months weren't dark) and it fixed me keeping the depression for at least that night away.

It has everything. It is funny to the point to make laugh like a loon, deep deep sensuality that leaves you gasping long before the sexual act, unexpected romantic moments that leaves you with a smile and others touching ones that leaves you with damp eyes and a heart full of understanding.

In the case that anyone that reads S/H missed it check it now...

11:26 pm Right Nor Wrong by Kelly Chambliss (NC-17)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Characters: Argus Filch, Severus Snape/Minerva McGonagall
Length: ~11,800
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kellychambliss
Author Website: Kelly's masterlist of fics
Why this must be read:
Yes, I know this is a double-header, and I'm reccing two stories in a row by the same author. What can I say? It fits my narrative arc, and provides a marvelous contrast to the previous fic, since this tale is told from Filch's POV and belongs far more to him than to Snape. It's another character study with another fantastically convincing voice, as different from Snape's as could be—well, barring their shared cynicism and misanthropic disgust.

This is Argus the Watcher, the caretaker, the man of few words and hard knocks, a paragon of side-pocket comments and sly jabs. I love the voice Kelly has fashioned for him: dour, observant, pithy and colloquial, a man hugging his opinions suspiciously to his chest. He's an outsider who knows no other way to be, a marginalized character who does as he's been done by while stubbornly refusing to be shamed into subservience. His position as underling gives him a special perspective on those above him, and his resentful nostalgia for 'proper' discipline makes a painful sort of sense once you know where it comes from.

He is also a voyeur. )
