12:13 am The Strange Disappearance of SallyAnne Perks by Paimpont (T)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: No pairings
Length: 38,323
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: Paimpont's FFN Profile
Why this must be read: SallyAnne Perks is just a name read in the first book on the Harry Potter series. We never learn anything about her and she has become a semi-favorite of various authors when they need a witch who isn't fully fleshed out for their fic and plot. In this, Paimpont takes the fact that we never learn anything about her, that she in fact, seems to literally disappear after the Sorting Ceremony, never to be heard from again and builds an entire fic off of it. No one at Hogwarts seems to remember little SallyAnne. No one but Harry. And as he and Hermione begin to investigate her disappearance, they learn that nothing is as it seems. There are a lot of really interesting and surprising twists and turns in this fic and the resolution is surprising. If you like good mysteries that don't involve the Voldemort plot line, this is the fic for you.

12:20 am In For A Penny, In For A Pounding by Susan Hillwig (T)
Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Bat Lash/OC
Length: ~8k words
Author on LJ: I don't think she has one.
Author Website: FFN Profile
Why this must be read:

Bat Lash came about with the resurgence of comic book interest in westerns, when Clint Eastwood made a big splash in Italy and we all got the urge to put on spurs and Stetsons again. So when a character who was well-thought of enough to merit inclusion in a TV episode of Justice League Unlimited has a delightfully ironic story suited to its Maverick style of humor, it begs to be recc'd on this site. This author has a fine touch for characterization and plot and sheer fun. Any story that has not only Bat Lash, but Scalphunter and Jonah Hex in it will add to your appreciation of feisty Western characters, and the OC is a smart gal living by her wits and writing skills in the days of the dime novels. All the characters in this story have various strains of doubtful motivations, but you'll perhaps empathize with hers to a greater degree.

Hi, I'm driving the van for Stargate this month. Apologies for being late. RL, ya know.

Fandom: STARGATE SG1
Pairing: Gen
Length: around 11, 500 words.
Author on LJ: [profile] alynt
Author Website: http://brothersinarmsfiction.com
Why this must be read: I have a fondness for littled fics and this one, a favorite of mine, has a twist or two. There's plenty of angst to go round and not just for Daniel and the team. I really grew to like the OCs in this and have to admit to feeling a little teary by the end.

Fandom:STARSKY and HUTCH
Pairing:Starsky/Hutch
Length:nice and long
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] cynatnite

Author Website:http://shslash.kassidyrae.com/fiction.html

Why this must be read:

This is a great story of Hutch angst and heartache and torment and addiction and scandal and love. This is a story where Starsky comes to the rescue and saves his fallen white knight.

Watching Starsky leave brought a lump to Hutch’s throat. After his partner boarded the plane, he wandered to one of the enormous plate glass windows showing the tarmac. After a few minutes, the plane began pulling away from the terminal. Seeing Starsky’s faint face in the window, Hutch raised his hand. His smile didn’t feel real as his partner gave him a wave back. He didn’t move until the plane was out of sight.

He pushed away from the window and started walking through the terminal. Starsky needed it, he thought. Seemed like only yesterday he was shot down when it was almost six months ago. Starsky’s family had remained patient while he recovered and for that, Hutch was glad. For the first time since he had known his partner, he wanted Starsky all to himself. He didn’t want to share him with anyone. Hutch was confident no one could take care of Starsky like he could.

Author Website: LoM Fic Index
Why this must be read:

CID and RCS get caught up in a prank war. It's a rare ensemble fic, where every character is portrayed with depth and heart, and the pranks are brilliantly inventive. This fic showcases how awesome Annie is, and Ray, and even Litton. It will put a big smile on your face.

Sam was coaxing a dubious brown liquid from the coffee machine when an inarticulate roar of rage filled the air. It seemed to emanate from Gene's office.

Coffee forgotten, Sam ran in and found his DCI standing in front of his wall poster of The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.

Which was now a defaced poster featuring three men with frocks. Someone had block-printed the name HUNT under "Bad", while "Good" was TYLER. Sam tried not to betray his amusement at seeing CARLING written under the word "Ugly".

08:33 pm But Who’s Counting? by halotolerant (Adult/18)
*waves hello to everyone* well I may be a little late but I am finally here and ready to start up the van and rec you some fabulous Professionals stories. So let’s start with one of my fav authors.

Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle
Length: approx 1350 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] halotolerant
Author Website: Links to Halo‘s stories can be found here and here.
Why this must be read: described by the author as “Five times Bodie and Doyle actually do it”, this is a stunning piece of writing. To start with it is wonderfully erotic, but you can also feel the emotions and the relationship between Bodie and Doyle changing as you read. Fantastically in character, full of angst, romance, and realisations, this is a involving, scorchingly hot, evocative, read.

09:03 pm And They Think It's Hell by Dira Sudis (teen)
Fandom: VORKOSIVERSE
Characters: Gregor, Aral, Cordelia
Length: 3k words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dsudis, [personal profile] dira
Author Website: AO3
Why this must be read:

Dira Sudis is another of the great authors of the fandom; I'm always so happy to see her name pop up, because I'm sure to get a great fic to read, and this one did not disappoint.  This is a missing scene for the end of The Vor Game, but read it even if you haven't read the book--it stands on its own two feet.  Emperor Gregor was raised by Aral and Cordelia Vorkosigan after his parents and grandfather died while he was still young.  Aral was his regent, and they were very close, as were he and Cordelia.  But they never told him much about his father Prince Serg, and so when Gregor finds out the truth it's a huge shock that sets off a suicide attempt and the major plot of the second half of the book.  But as The Vor Game is told from Miles' POV, we never get to see what happens afterward, when Gregor and Aral and Cordelia are all on the same planet again and have time to talk.

Gregor is young, and unsure, and his world has just been shaken.  History makes a difference, and so does family, and trust, and love, and duty, and Dira shows us how much in a poignant three thousand words.

09:14 pm Free Falling by toestastegood (PG-13)
Fandom: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER
Pairing: Gen; Faith
Length: 1,860
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] toestastegood
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] fic_flail
Why this must be read:

This piece is an excellent character study of who Faith might have been in the Wishverse. She's still someone who is very damaged and who life has given the short end of the stick. The author does a wonderful job structuring this piece, we follow Faith as she grows up, as she becomes a statistic, another Slayer in an endless line.

When Faith Lehane was thirteen years old, one of her teachers told her that she'd never amount to anything – that girls like her were doomed to fail.

It was in that precise moment that she resolved to prove that woman wrong.
