02:34 am No surrender by mad_bertha (PG)
Fandom: WATCHMEN
Characters: Sylvia Kovacs, gen
Length: 2.6k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mad_bertha
Author's website: fic list
Why this must be read:

It's a story which elevates a minor character: Rorschach's despised, despicable mother. The canon encourages us to hate this character, since she's only ever shown in flashbacks, recalled as lifelong trauma by the kid she abused.

In No surrender, Sylvia is the protagonist, and it's her trauma driving the story. Her experiences are described brutally, well enough to make you wince, and this fic is all about the sympathetic reaction. The storytelling never gets vague or sentimental, and Sylvia's never held up as a victim, but her misery is morbidly compelling to read and it's hard not to sympathize as she struggles through it.

07:42 am Seven by shadowings (PG)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Tonks/Luna, Fleur/Hermione, implied Harry/Ginny
Length: 2763
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] shadowings
Author Website: Masterlist
Why this must be read: Okay, I might be cheating a bit since this was actually written for me in last year's [livejournal.com profile] femmefest. However, it's good. Real good. Ficathon entries can be hit or miss as authors attempt to figure out how to bring to life the prompt given to them. [livejournal.com profile] shadowings places the Harry Potter characters in a non-magicical setting (the war in Iraq), makes them soldiers (in the US Army), and creates a delightful, hard hitting au. Pureblood fanaticism becomes Jihadist extremism, the Hallows become Voldemort's trusted lieutenants, and Tonks refuses to come out of the closet while stationed in Iraq since it's just not safe, especially with a 40% chance of dying in combat, which would make coming out kind of moot. In the end, this fic touches on all the aspects of war, from the soldiers to home life with Luna. Sparsely written and hard hitting, it is well worth a read.

Fandom: DC COMIC
Pairing/characters: Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson
Length: ~1k words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] niftywithan
Author Website: Fanfic tag
Why this must be read:

It suits the mood of wanting tenderness. In fact, it does so without overloading the story with mush; just like one berry per spoonful of breakfast cereal is enough to satisfy, this story satisfies. Young Dick is subject to night terrors in his new home, where everything overwhelms, even his bed. He knows just who to turn to at 3:04 a.m.

11:18 am Like A Marriage, by Akamine-chan (PG)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Characters: Bob Fraser, Buck Frobisher
Length: 1150 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] akamine_chan
Author Website: AO3 page
Why this must be read: This is set during Bob and Buck's estrangement, and we get to see Bob tackling a case on his own. Which, considering his delusions of invincibility, doesn't go all that well until Buck comes along. I love Bob's mixed feelings about Buck, and also how he genuinely cares about the environment.

Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS
Pairing: John Sheppard/RodneyMcKay
Length: 5, 371 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kisahawklin
Author Website: http://archiveofourown.org/works/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&query[text]=KisaHawklin
Why this must be read: This story starts out lighthearted and funny and then begins to introduce some pathos and angst. It's so delicately done that it takes a moment before you realize it's happened. I love her Rodney in this. He's a little different from canon Rodney but in the best possible way.

Excerpt:
The stalls go on for miles.

"The stalls go on for miles," Rodney whines. "Do we really have to stop at every one?"

Ronon claps him on the shoulder so hard he sinks six inches deeper into the muck they call a road on this planet, and Sheppard stops at the next stall dutifully. There are rows of prizes in the back, clear jars filled with pink, yellow, purple, orange, green, and blue liquid.

"What do we have to do to win those?" Sheppard asks, pointing at the jars. The woman at the stall smiles up at him and bats her eyelashes. Rodney rolls his eyes. Maybe it's a flirting contest and they'll end up with a full collection.

08:23 pm A Brand New Itch, by green_grrl (NC-17)
Fandom: Canadian Actor RPF
Pairing: Paul Gross/Callum Keith Rennie
Length: 2,742 words
Author on LJ[livejournal.com profile] green_grrl
Author website: fic list on LJ
Why this must be read:

I loved CKR on Californication, and the golf-kilt-accent scene between him and David was one of my favorite. Written for Pretty Lights 2010, A Brand New Itch is a perfect example of how a single scene can be inspiration for a great story.  It's a mix of hot sex and lovely banter, as Paul discovers new kinks for kilts and Scottish accents.

08:36 pm Something Good by [livejournal.com profile] mojavedragonfly (PG-13 rated)
Good evening everyone, my name's Kip and someone has made the mistake of giving me the wheel to the White Collar van this month! I don't have any genre or pairing preference and so hope to rec a mix for you this month. :)

Fandom: WHITE COLLAR
Pairing: Gen

Why this must be read:
Something Good
Neal did not enjoy the week Peter was on vacation as much as Peter did.

I love this fic. It gives one take on what might happen to Neal if Peter goes away. It's the tried and tested hurt/comfort fandom trope and I am a little bit of a sucker for those. But in this fic, Neal is still very Neal and still won't do exactly what Peter wants him to. The author does a very good job of investigating Neal and Peter's relationship.

10:04 pm Responsibilities of Command by GumbieCat
Fandom: VORKOSIVERSE
Characters: Gregor, Miles
Length: 2200
Author on LJ: [personal profile] gumbie_cat
Author Website: AO3
Why this must be read:

Here's another missing scene for the end of The Vor Game, so I figured I'd rec this one next.  This is written from the point of view of Miles, checking in with Gregor to see if he's okay.  This is a lighter take on things; and it's also partly about the different ways Gregor and Miles handle depression.  It's well-written, and both of them seem very in-character.

10:12 pm Plink Plink Fizz by fawsley (PG)

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Sam Tyler/Gene Hunt
Length: 725
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] fawsley
Author Website: lifein1973 memories
Why this must be read:

This one is hot off the press, posted a few days ago, and it's a wonderful example of [livejournal.com profile] fawsley's brilliance. She always gives very good Gene, Sam's confusion is endearing, and the dynamic between the boys is utterly believable. She takes what is quite a common storyline in the fandom and makes it her own, adding subtle twists to keep you on your toes.

‘We had sex. Drunken sex. Last night. Here. In your bed. Remember?’

He waited for the first blow to fall.

Gene frowned and pursed his lips, then sighed deeply.

‘Yep. So we did. You’re dead right there, Sammy-boy.’
