Fandom: STAR WARS

Length: ~500 words

Why this must be read:

This author writes incisive prose with more than a touch of dreamy poetry; really, I can think of few authors who go so surely into that Galaxy Far, Far Away. Read this fic which is tagged both 'original trilogy' and 'prequel trilogy' (it's intertrilogy) and look in on Ben's hut at any point in the nineteen years before 0 BBY. The themes described in this fic would remain unchanged.

09:31 pm Living With the Effects of Involuntary Temporal Slippage -- A Case History by sheldrake (PG - Teen)
I swear I will get into three a week once the days get a tiny bit longer! Either way, I'm back round the block today with another dose of Brit goodness; this time in the form of The Mighty Boosh's Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt. I'm a huge fan of double acts, and while the Boosh are a five man team Noel and Julian are frequently treated as their own separate entity and classed as a double act. They have a strange energy between them, Noel's flighty and frequently child-like behavior mashed up against the more reserved and 'classic' Julian seems like a team doomed to burn itself out, but I firmly believe there will always be something special there.

Fandom: RPF (British Comedy)
Pairing: Noel Fielding/Julian Barratt

Why this must be read:
Up front, this piece is a mind trip. It's told in third person, but apparently from the inside of Noel's head - as the title suggests he's having difficulty dealing with the implications of time. Time is weird, as the story states strongly, it moves forward and sometimes back or sidelong. It stretches, thick and thin, creating an altered reality in Noel's mind.

While there is Noel/Julian content - this story is not really about Noel and Ju. It's about everything.

It's beautiful, really. This is one that I'll let speak for itself.

So, while it may not be everyone's cuppa - I thought it was a delightful journey into the altered state of Noel's mind. Really, just a beautiful read.

Pairing: Steve/Danny
Length: 74,556 words

Why this must be read:
I love a good AU and this is a great, long, AU. Steve is a spy "who does things differently" and Danny is his handler. Chin is their boss and Kono is the receptionist who is more than meets the eye. The story follows Steve and Danny as they travel the world on missions, stay in hotels, break rules and fall in love. Keeping characters in character is often tricky in an AU, but Zarah does it right. Danny still rants and Steve is still crazy and together they still have an intense chemistry. The author warns for graphic depictions of violence, but I don't think it's anything you wouldn't see on the show.  Settle in with a nice cup of tea for this novella. It's one hell of a great read.

Excerpt:

Steve. Alright. Chances are that's the only part of his name that's genuine; agents who are sent out to do field work don't risk revealing themselves, and while Steve might be used to doing things differently, that's one rule that applies nearly unilaterally. Sometimes, it leads to the meeting of two fake last names that are both connected to a color – brown and red? Awesome. This partnership is clearly destined to be.

What a shame that star-crossed relationships tend to end in mutual death. Like Romeo and Juliet, who killed themselves. Like Bonnie and Clyde, who died in a rain of bullets.

ETA the excerpt and a few more details. I was exhausted last night and did not do this story justice.

Length: 5,250 words

Why this must be read: Stories that deal with incest walk a tricky line, in my opinion, where often they either play it off like there's nothing wrong with what they're doing at all (which is pretty unrealistic) or make it so wrong that it feels too uncomfortable to read. This story does an incredible job at exploring the messy space in between those extremes: Gee (an imperfect, strong, female version of Gerard that is characterized so well) and Mikey have a complicated relationship. They often struggle with how wrong what they're doing is, but they also have a familiarity and attraction that makes it so hard not to do it, even when they bicker or need their own space or sleep with other people. It's not simple, because it couldn't be.

The author is one of my absolute favourites. Her writing is poetic, painting these incredible visuals that stand out in vivid colour in my mind, while still clear and concise, not getting bogged down in description. She tackles a subject that would normally make me really uncomfortable - brother/sister incest, and the possibility of incest pregnancy - but it works. I'm amazed at how honestly and carefully she portrays what the struggle is like for Gee, how messy and complicated it is. Their lives aren't glamorous, the decisions they make aren't perfect, but this story makes something kind of beautiful out of this gritty and complex glimpse into their world, and I hope you'll give this story a chance too!
