Why this must be read: Continuing on my theme of "stories done in interesting and new ways", I'm very excited to bring you one of the best stories I think has come out of our fandom in a long time, writing a theme I love (cross-dressing) in such a unique and relateable way! This story follows Frank as he experiments and discovers parts of his own gender identity - all because he has to buy a dress from a thrift store as a disguise.

Instead of sexualizing it right away, the authors acknowledge that for Frank, putting on the women's clothing at first is strange - feeling at once the wrong shape and the right one - and involves more than just stuffing a bra. His relationship with Gerard is exciting, and seeing him support Frank as he navigates the cross-dressing (something that becomes not just a disguise but a part of Frank) warms my heart. Watching Frank move through both worlds - working at a diner, sweaty and unshaven and in all ways a man, and then sitting in front of the mirror with a bra strap falling off his shoulder, fixing his makeup - is incredible, treated by the authors with a perfect mixture of homour, honesty and realism.

Pairing: Winona, Jim, Kirk/McCoy
Length: 7165

Why this must be read: This is an unflinching look at the relationship between mother and son as Jim ages. Written from Winona's POV, the Winona pictured here is someone who has made plenty of mistakes and really doesn't realise it till Jim is grown up.

I like how the author provides a backstory with glimpses of Jim's life according to age.You can see the development of how he feels about his mother, but clings to the idea of family anyway.
