Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Gen
Length: ~ 16.100 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] katallison
Author Website: Kat Allison's Stories
Why this must be read:

This is a wonderful story about friendship: Joe, Duncan and Methos friendship. And about what will be the cost of friending mortals when you are immortal.
Joe have been finally retired from The Watchers, and all three of them are "celebrating". What Kat shows us here is how fundamentally different are Duncan and Methos, and its painful. But it's a worthy pain. Her Methos is not made of kittens and rainbows. She's mercifulness with him, but not unfair.

Here, see what I'm talking about )

There is a companion piece to this, Last Set Before Closing, set some years later, about Joe and Duncan, that is as painful and beautiful at this one. So, go to read The Parting Glass, and let Kat know how amazing her writing is

Fandom: HAWAII FIVE-O
Pairing: Jenna/Kono
Length: 4000
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] allheadybooks
Author Website: Her fic tag

Why this must be read:
Fair warning for my recs: I have a massive crush on Jenna and think Kono is awesome, which will probably be reflected in what I rec. Starting A Thing was the first Jenna/Kono fic I read, and it set a pretty high standard.

The author does a great job of showing how broken Jenna is by the death of her fiancee, and writes a lovely, realistic Kono struggling with her feelings for Jenna, and with Jenna's pain. She also writes a wonderful friendship interlude between Danny and Kono - a little of which is under the cut

Pairing: David Duchovny/Gillian Anderson
Length: vignette

Why this must be read: I imagine this story was inspired by this excerpt from Charlie Rose's interview of David Duchovny in the summer of 1998, but this time, we get Gillian's POV.

05:51 pm The Angel of Mercy Affair by Lee the T (R)
Fandom: MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: Napoleon Solo/Illya Kuryakin
Length: ~6000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] leethet
Author Website: Gen stories at File 40, Slash stories at File Forty and other Slash stories at C&GM

Why this must be read:

This van seems to have a bit of the timey wimey in it because today we suddenly find ourselves in December. And [livejournal.com profile] leethet makes you feel the cold and the damp and the hopelessness of being on the run in a snow storm, right along with the bruised and battered and desperate Napoleon. But this is also a Christmas story of sorts, and succor comes in unexpected guises at a down at the heels soup kitchen at the edge of town-- from a surprising Santa and then from Napoleon's personal blond and blue eyed Angel of Mercy.

What I like about this fic is not just the clear, strong writing, the visceral sense of place; but the way Napoleon and Illya understand each other, the understated emotions that finally demand expression--the way their relationship deepens without sentimentality. And I , uh, like the baby blue pyjamas too :)

Illya maneuvered around a corner with minimal sliding. “How badly are you injured.” It was not a question, but a demand for itemization of a bill that would assuredly be paid.

“General cuts and bruises, mostly,” Napoleon said. “Dehydrated and hungry enough that I actually ate the soup you no doubt smelled coming in –”

“Bozhe moi.”

“—and incipient frost bite.”

Illya said nothing. Napoleon breathed in and breathed out the truest truth. “I’m very tired, Illya.”

06:04 pm The Squire of Eros by aldora89 (NC-17)
Fandom: STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES
Pairing: Kirk/Spock
Length: 26k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] aldora89
Author Website: Master list on LJ
Why this must be read:

Trelane of The Squire of Gothos fame is a character a lot of people skip over, or dismiss as one of the several near-omnipotents that Kirk deals with. [livejournal.com profile] aldora89 brings him back in a tale that is equal parts funny, sweet, dramatic, smart, hot, and loving. The entire crew is marvelously in character -- I love Uhura's part in this, and Sulu is great as well.

Where the fic shines, though, is with Kirk and Spock, who feel so utterly like the Kirk and Spock I saw on screen. Spock, in particular, is a treat with his unashamed snark in interacting with Trelane. And I always get a kick out of Trelane, who gets some of the best lines, and who has a tiny twist at the end that's a reward for fans of the Star Trek series beyond TOS.

This fic combines combines plot, character, and sex for a story that's just utterly fun.

Fandom: SHERLOCK HOLMES (BBC)
Pairing: None
Length: 4217 words

Why this must be read::

Once you've been reading BBCverse fic for a while, you begin to believe there's nothing more to be said about the possible aftermath of "The Great Game." This story proves that a good writer can always find something new to say. Lestrade and Mrs. Hudson bond and try to take care of the boys and it's lovely, heartfelt, and sweet.

Why this must be read: Because it's a poignant, beautifully written look at the most compelling and angstiest relationship in Star Wars: the one of Luke and his father. It's the story of Luke's mental journey from hating Vader as an evil enemy to the acceptance, compassion and faith that makes him attempt to redeem his father. This story shows us the conflict and depression that, realistically, must have plagued Luke after the shocking revelation and trauma he received on Bespin.

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Sam/Gene, Phyliss/Annie
Length: 1644
Author:  [livejournal.com profile] ange_fic
Why this must be read:

It has Lesbians, Bisexuality and Homosexuality - need I say anymore? Well if you insist - It gives the lovely ladies of the series some action in a fandom where femslash is extremley rare, while having some very hot slash happening at the same time, it has something for everyone while being well written, in character. It also features a new situation that causes two characters to get together that I havn't ever seen used before in fic from this fandom. Quite Kinky.

Why this must be read:

A short but beautiful fic that is also chilling. It focuses on a character that doesn't have many fics written about him so is a nice change from the norm. With so few words Fawsley is able to make a chill run right through your body, the ending gives you such a mixture of powerful emotions: saddness, discomfort as well as warmth, peace and a sudden new respect for the character. A must read.

09:32 pm The Ministry's Man by musamihi (PG-13)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: John Dawlish/Bartemious Crouch, Sr. (unrequited), John Dawlish/Rufus Scrimgeour
Length: 11,300
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] musamihi
Author Website: Author's masterlist on LJ
Why this must be read:
Frankly, if you'd asked me if there was any character I was even less interested in than Piers Polkiss (see previous rec), John Dawlish would have been high on the list. But this fic is staggering—gorgeously written and subtly disturbing, a jaw-dropping act of sympathetic infiltration.

Dawlish is an uncanny specimen of follower in search of a leader, a man heavily invested in black and white morality, a wizard who prefers not to think for himself. Instead he projects a romantic aura of incorruptible Greatness upon men he believes capable of holding back the ever-present terror, the moral vacuum he sees waiting to swallow up the wizarding world. Dawlish is infected with this vacuum; his submissiveness and hero worship will wring your heart and make your skin crawl at the same time. [livejournal.com profile] musamihi submerges us in his viewpoint, using canon events as touchstones. The effect is utterly mesmerizing, incredibly atmospheric, poignant and distressing, like being underwater and seeing everything familiar distorted by a foreign substance. The perspective it gives us is far removed from Harry Potter's, but no less limited in its scope.

Throughout, Dawlish's political loyalties express themselves in sexual pining and overidentification. He's a weak rather than a good man, but this story doesn't condemn him. His fate is already sad enough. Heartbreaking, in fact. This is a man whose worst nightmare comes true. The portraits of Barty Crouch, Sr. and Rufus Scrimgeour are also fine, painfully so, canon and so much more than canon. But John Dawlish is the most unforgettable of all. Truly, this is an astonishing piece of narrative ventriloquism, weirdly beautiful and psychologically penetrating. It haunted me for days.
