Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS Pairing: none Length: 1,718 words Author on LJ: friendshipperAuthor Website: SGA Fanfic tag at LJ, City on the Ocean's EdgeWhy this must be read: A stand-out example of the vast array of horror possibilities in the Stargate fandom. While the horror elements in this one are a lot more gentle and ethereal than other choices, this story struck me as more shiver-inducing/spine-tingling for the heavy sense of sorrow along with the horror. The reader immediately feels the heavy heart that the ATA-gene carrier residents of Atlantis feel as they see the shadows of their dead around their city. As John sees Sumner out of the corner of his eye and has Elizabeth hovering over his shoulder, Friendshipper gives us a look into the heart of Atlantis as it cracks with the loss of her residents and the remnants of her enemies. Vastly known for her action/adventure epics, Friendshipper is no less an adept at emotionally-driven pieces and grief-stricken examinations of loss. This fic will leave you with a hole in your heart, tissues in your hand, and a quiver on your spine. ( Snippet )In Heaven and Earth

Fandom: TRON Pairing: gen, Quorra-centric Length: 1,424 words Author on LJ: mochisquish Warnings: Spoilers for Legacy. Multiple derezzings. Why this must be read:Fanfic tends to focus on the “Little Mermaid” aspects of Quorra’s personality: her curiosity about the Users’ world, her guilelessness, her cheerfulness. This one doesn’t. ( She threw her weight to the side and her foot went down, scraping against the road like fire as the lightcycle turned on a dime. Her disc flew from her hand, decapitated the first unlucky soul, ripped through the shoulder of another before returning safely. ) Here is the Quorra who “intervened” on the Lightcycle Grid, who sprang between Sam and the Black Guards, who was willing to face Rinzler alone if it bought her friends some time; who studied patience under Kevin Flynn, but never fully absorbed the lesson; who may be a little too ready to die for her cause. This story is an excellent character study and an exciting action sequence. mochisquish writes a hell of chase scene, and her fight descriptions are sharp and clear. “The Rabbit”

Fandom: TRON Pairing: Sam/ TronLength: 27,828 words in 11 chapters Author on LJ: smiley_anon Author Website: Index postWarnings: AU of Legacy. Spoilers Why this must be read: In honor of Hurricane Irene, and whatever lepidopteran bastard flapped at the wrong time, I thought I’d rec some stories that apply the butterfly effect to Legacy. First up is this suspenseful novella, which splits off from canon over the Sea of Simulation — and separates Sam from Kevin and Quorra in the process. ( A shattering crash and a roar broke Sam's world and he was falling, flying, knocked back in a rushing surge of chaos. ) From that slambang opening, smiley_anon keeps the stakes high as events play out in ways that sometimes parallel canon, and in other places diverge in a very satisfying fashion, like when Quorra and Sam square off against Clu: ( “You’re done.” Quorra’s voice, from the right, cold animosity expressed infinitely more articulately than his own hot rage. ) And then there’s the wild card, a certain Program who gets to play a much larger role this time around... “Hold On” master postETA: Ooh, just found fanart by Salioka from FF.net. Fandom: RPF: THE X-FILES Pairing: David Duchovny/Gillian Anderson Length: short short story Author on LJ: hauntsmeAuthor Website: Yes and no. This is a sock-puppet. Why this must be read: It's lyrical and bittersweet, with characters I can believe in. What's even rarer in fanfic, it has wit. This fine writer gave us only one story in this fandom, but it's a memorable one. Dear hauntsme, if you are lurking out there somewhere, we miss you. For a time, she was everything wrong with his life. She was infidelity, a job he was sick of and professional uncertainty all wrapped up in blue eyes, full lips and a sense of us-against-the-world that led them time after time after time to bed. They were nothing alike and everything alike; caught up in so much craziness that they truly believed they were the only ones who could understand each other. Familiarity breeds contempt, they say, but it can breed other things too. She taught him that you can need someone wholly without being in love with them. It was a hard lesson, but a good one, and one they wrote on each other's bodies until it seared the flesh and worked down to the bone.Inches Apart
